Chapter 118: Chapter 117: Get Me in Touch With a Lawyer
The man with glasses didn’t expect someone would really step in, spitting as he spoke to Gu Bai.
"What’s it got to do with you? Kid, didn’t your family tell you not to play hero in society?"
Gu Bai’s face had turned completely cold.
The four bodyguards also sensed something was wrong, pushed through the crowd, and rushed to Gu Bai’s side.
Handing the old man to Qi Man, who was already standing behind him, Gu Bai walked directly towards the man with glasses, the bodyguards following suit.
Looking at Gu Bai and the four tall, burly bodyguards in front of him, the man with glasses realized he might have provoked someone he shouldn’t have. Though he was apprehensive, he couldn’t help but speak harshly, "What are you planning to do?"
Without turning his head, Gu Bai instructed the bodyguards, "Hit him as painfully as possible."
In both his previous life and this one, Gu Bai had never been in a fight, and he certainly wouldn’t dirty his hands for this kind of scum.
Following Gu Bai’s order, two of the bodyguards in the front immediately went up and punched out his gold-rimmed glasses, while another delivered a blow to his nose bridge.
The bodyguards, all ex-military, were familiar with human anatomy and understood the underlying meaning in Gu Bai’s words.
They knew to be as ruthless as possible, but not enough to cause serious injury.
Though the punches landed hard, a post-event examination would probably conclude at most a minor injury.
Obviously, the man with glasses couldn’t withstand it; he was half unconscious in no time.
Seeing the man with glasses pass out, the bodyguards looked back at Gu Bai, who signaled them to stop and return to his side.
The onlookers immediately voiced their approval.
"Young man, well done! We’ve recorded it; this is an act of bravery. When the police come, we’ll vouch for you!"
Gu Bai glanced at the cheering crowd, his expression unchanged.
In this age of social media, Gu Bai had long seen how dark society could be. The words ’act of bravery’ were a luxury nowadays.
However, Gu Bai didn’t look down on these people.
Self-preservation is human nature. These people have families, and it’s unreasonable to expect them to disregard caution and charge forward brainlessly like him for some so-called virtue.
This is moral coercion; there’s no law mandating it as an obligation.
In his past life, he probably would have stood among the crowd because he couldn’t bear the consequences then.
But it’s different now; he has the means and confidence.
"Elder, how are you feeling now? Do you need to go to the hospital?"
Gu Bai asked, supporting the elderly man again.
"I’m fine, young man. You need to leave quickly; the police are coming. Once they arrive, I’ll tell them I was the one who hit him."
The old man’s dark face showed urgency.
Gu Bai smiled nonchalantly, "It’s alright. Didn’t you hear what they said? This was an act of bravery. The police won’t trouble us."
Whether it would be recognized as bravery, Gu Bai didn’t know. But if he left now, he would definitely be charged with fleeing the scene, so it was better to stay and face the police. After all, everyone present knew it was Gu Bai who instructed the bodyguards to hit the man, which legally is no different from doing it himself and could be even more severe.
Seeing Gu Bai not listening to persuasion, the old man urgently tried to convince him again.
However, Qi Man, who had stayed by Gu Bai’s side, laughed without a care.
"What are you laughing at?"
"I thought you were going to hit him yourself; I was getting ready to cheer you on."
Gu Bai laughed awkwardly.
Even though he was six feet tall, he wasn’t particularly strong, and his physical stats were only 73 points. If he really fought, he’d probably get a scratch or two even if he won. With bodyguards available, why take the risk himself?
"It would dirty my hands to personally deal with this kind of person."
But he certainly wouldn’t say what he really thought out loud.
Qi Man understood but didn’t expose him and continued to laugh, "No matter what, you were really cool just now!"
"Am I not usually cool?"
"You were coolest just now."
Qi Man wasn’t worried about the police.
Though she didn’t know much about Gu Bai’s identity, she knew that at 20, he owned several companies and had billions as pocket money. That wasn’t your average wealthy family. Seeing his fearless demeanor eased her worries, allowing her to tease him playfully.
She didn’t know that Gu Bai’s pocket money had increased to 20 billion, or she would have been even more stunned.
Before they finished talking, several policemen in black uniforms arrived at the scene.
As the world’s safest country, especially in an international metropolis like Shanghai, the police response time was extraordinarily fast.
"Who called the police just now?"
"I did."
The middle-aged woman, who had warned Gu Bai earlier, stepped forward and truthfully explained what she knew to the police.
The man with glasses, who had been lying on the ground half-unconscious, also regained consciousness. Despite the nosebleed all over his face, he howled like a pig being slaughtered, "Officer, he attacked me; the blood on my face is from the two men he ordered to hit me. Everyone around here can testify for me!"
He pointed at Gu Bai and the two bodyguards who had acted.
The police, having a basic understanding of the situation, helped the man with glasses up and walked over to Gu Bai, asking him and the bodyguards to show their identification: "Gentlemen, please come to the station with us to clarify things."
Gu Bai nodded, indicating he understood.
"But please take this elderly man to the hospital first; his waist seemed to be twisted earlier."
The police were about to agree when the old man said, "Officer, I’m fine. These young men hit people because of me. You can cuff me; it has nothing to do with them."
Being an older person, he had very little understanding of the law. He simply believed that hitting someone was illegal and, fearful of implicating Gu Bai, pleaded with the police almost desperately.
"Elder, it’s alright. We’re just asking him to clarify things, not saying that this student has committed a crime."
The old man was stubborn and refused to believe the police, insisting on going to the station with them.
The police, unable to argue with him, had to let him go along with Gu Bai.
After getting into the police car, Gu Bai asked the policeman beside him, "Can I make a phone call now?"
The policeman smiled and replied, "Of course. We’re just bringing you back to understand the situation. Even if you were a suspect, you’d still have the right to make a call."
Gu Bai thanked the policeman and then dialed Xing Na’s number.
"Get me in touch with the best lawyers and have them meet me at Jinling Road Police Station."
Xing Na, confused for a moment, hurriedly asked, "What happened, President Gu?"
Gu Bai wasn’t in the mood to explain much, so he simply said, "Just arrange it as quickly as possible."
Xing Na didn’t ask further, reporting to her superiors immediately and using Construction Bank’s resources to contact lawyers for Gu Bai.
The policemen in the car exchanged surprised glances at him.
