Chapter 8 The Man Who Fell From the Sky

Snap!

The silk thread snapped, and the eighteen prayer beads strung on the bracelet shot out.

Time seemed to stand still.

Only the prayer beads, now dimmed and fissured, were flying.

They were flung twenty to thirty meters away.

Or they struck the two investigators on their bodies and faces, like being hit hard by a marble.

Wei Nian’s face was bruised.

He didn’t care, just stared blankly at the broken prayer beads in his hand.

The pain in his heart was even deeper.

He seemed to have lost his soul.

This string of prayer beads, blessed for twenty years, had actually broken?!

This ghoul…

This ghoul…

He faintly saw a giant shadow not far away.

A monster with a disproportionately large head, resembling a tumor, was roaring at them with its mouth open, and tendril-like silk threads extended from its gaping maw.

The scene before him gradually distorted.

A cacophony of sharp, piercing cries echoed in his ears.

Damn it!

Wei Nian suddenly jolted awake, biting his lip until it bled. He lunged forward, grabbed his stunned colleague Ke Yuan, slapped him twice on the face, and then roared at him, “Hurry, get back and have the bureau send reinforcements!”

Ke Yuan, stumbling a distance away, snapped back to his senses.

“Brother Wei, what about you?”

“Someone has to keep an eye on this ghoul, otherwise, where will we find it when reinforcements arrive? You just hurry up.”

Wei Nian felt that if he could light a cigarette right now, it would be incredibly cool.

But there was no time.

This ghoul was already enraged and incredibly active. He, as the ‘culprit,’ couldn't escape and shouldn’t escape.

If he left, how much danger would an active ghoul bring to the surrounding area!

He dared not imagine.

He hoped his own life could somewhat appease the ghoul’s activity.

Such an ending would not be a disgrace to his identity as an investigator.

No regrets in this life.

Wei Nian stood his ground, the wind whipping his black trench coat, making it rustle.

Not far away, the giant, grotesque shadow was slowly but surely encroaching on the remaining distance.

Dark clouds gathered.

The sky grew darker, and a storm seemed to be brewing, with thunderclaps.

The giant shadow abruptly stopped.

Did it seem to tilt its head up?

Wei Nian then looked up.

This was a construction site, with a half-built building next to it.

Scaffolding was still erected around it.

Steel bars stood like a forest.

A figure stood atop it, their gaze seemingly… fixed on the ghoul, whose silhouette was barely visible in the shadow.

A quarter of an hour ago,

Inside the building under construction, particles of light converged, outlining the figure of Black Saber.

He was as vigilant as ever.

His hand rested on the hilt of his saber, his gaze swept across the surroundings, and he skillfully entered the ‘Ghoul Tracking’ vision.

Secretly peeping… no, Fang You, who had synchronized with the Apostle's vision, acutely sensed a difference.

Last time,

Black Saber’s Ghoul Tracking could only see faint, sparse grey-black spots. Only when approaching the ghoul could he see the corrosive wind swirling.

This meant that previously, Black Saber's descent point was only a dozen meters from the Knocker Ghoul, allowing for simple tracking.

Any further, and the clues might have been insufficient.

But today,

He could clearly see in his vision the corrosive wind drifting towards the outside of the building, allowing him to judge the ghoul’s approximate location at a glance.

Black Saber glanced at it, then deactivated ‘Ghoul Tracking.’

Activating and deactivating seemed fluid and natural… Fang You guessed that Black Saber was conserving stamina.

He slowly but surely reached the highest point of this unfinished building.

The view here was expansive.

Black Saber activated ‘Ghoul Tracking’ again, and the differences presented in Fang You’s game interface were even more pronounced.

Wisps of corrosive wind drifted, converging at a certain spot on the construction site, swirling around a terrifying, invisible figure.

But Black Saber discerned even more.

No longer just a few delayed claw marks, but… an entire trail left by the ghoul, like a completely drenched monster leaving puddles wherever it moved.

It lasted for over ten seconds before disappearing from Black Saber's sight.

Judging by the trail, this ghoul was not small, and likely stronger than the last one.

Fang You was still contemplating when Black Saber suddenly looked to the side.

At the entrance of the construction site, beyond the cordon, two figures entered.

Wearing black trench coats, they walked in with clear purpose.

Fang You let out a surprised “Oh.”

After a brief moment of thought, he issued a “standby” command to Black Saber.

This was his first command, and he felt a little nervous. He saw Black Saber move to a more concealed position and simply stand there, watching silently.

Watching the two below sprinkle powder, raise prayer bead bracelets, and put them on.

“Is this how the guardians of the dark side in this world eliminate ghouls?”

“It seems a bit… ordinary.”

He almost said weak.

Perhaps, these two were just very minor characters?

Wei Nian was a veteran investigator, undoubtedly an elite. He had handled over ten ghouls independently.

His experience far surpassed that of Ke Yuan, a newcomer just starting.

But the events of today still caused his emotions to fluctuate wildly.

The sudden appearance of a figure actually attracted the ghoul’s attention?

More so than he could?

Was that possible?

He was unaware, and in the next moment, his eyes widened further as he saw the figure on the rooftop leap down!

Like a mighty warrior descending from the heavens.

A fierce killing intent radiated, stirring the wind and clouds.

Bang!

Black Saber landed on the scaffolding, nearly breaking the bamboo poles. Though his physique wasn't imposing, at this moment, he was like a charging war chariot.

His eyes were fixed solely on the grey-black silhouette of the ghoul.

Before he even arrived, the saber was already swung.

Blade Slash!

A blood-red halo appeared on the blade, quickly spreading to the entire blade with a snap, faster and smoother than last time.

And its color was even deeper!

The skilled Blade Slash allowed Black Saber to execute it more casually, without requiring a specific starting stance or remaining stationary.

He charged, the saber swung.

Then came chops, sweeps, lifts, and slashes, one sword technique after another.

Although prefixed with 'basic,' these sword techniques were still incredibly sharp, emitting glints of cold light, interspersed with Blade Slashes.

Normal attack, normal attack, normal attack, ultimate move!

Then continue with normal attacks!

He cut through streaks of grey-black mist like seaweed. Faintly, Fang You seemed to hear sharp shrieks, but they were cut short.

The battle saber, glowing with blood-red light, slashed down from above.

Boom!

The faint silhouette of the ghoul seemed to become clearer. The tumor-like, oversized head roared, and in the next moment, it shattered with a bang.

On the game interface, Fang You was somewhat surprised.

Three Blade Slashes and over a dozen normal attacks… Black Saber's combat performance was visually far more impactful than the first time.

The upgrade of his skills had made his combat more fluid, and it seemed to reduce consumption as well.

Unfortunately, Fang You had no skills and couldn't fully appreciate it.

He could only exclaim, Black Saber is awesome.

Truly worthy of being cultivated by this savior.

Descending from the sky!

Saber striking the ghoul!

Who was this powerful figure that appeared out of nowhere?

No, was this something a human could do!

Wei Nian's eyes were wide open. Watching Black Saber sheathe his saber and disappear into the distance, he remained stunned for a long time before snapping back to reality. He slapped his forehead, “Damn! I forgot to thank this brother for saving my life.”

“But this brother is truly a mighty man!”
