Chapter 68: Xiao Xi : Cannot Make Diagnosis

"Here, I brought this fruit for you." Yuan Ni’s face turned red as he offered the reddish-orange fruit that he had brought with him. He clearly went to search for the herbs that his grandmother asked for, but when he saw these fruits blooming, he couldn’t help but bring some for Shao Xia.

Shao Xia looked at the fruits that Yuan Ni had collected, and her eyes flashed with disgust. These fruits were something that she stopped eating the second day after she was made the guardian of the beast temple. They were more sour than they were sweet and didn’t taste good. But Shao Xia still took them; after all, the fruits didn’t mean much, but the giver did.

Yuan Ni was the only grandson of Priestess Yuan. If she could get together with him, she could live a good life for a few days. As for whether she was going to take him as her partner? That was simply Yuan Ni dreaming. This tribe was soon going to fall. Why would Shao Xia waste her time getting together with the grandson of a fallen priestess?

In a few months, Priestess Yuan would be injured by a beast while saving her reckless grandson, and she would die a sorry death. With the death of the priestess, other tribes would start ravaging the tribe.

When Priestess Yuan was gone, what would happen to Yuan Ni?

While Shao Xia was planning her future, she had no idea that the past had slowly started to change. Ruan Chanchan, who had no idea about what was happening behind her, collected enough firewood and then returned to the cave. As soon as she returned, she saw an emaciated mer kneeling in front of her cave.

In front of him stood Ruan Zeqiu, whose expression was nothing but sheer frustration.

"What’s going on here?" Ruan Chanchan glanced at the mer, who was kneeling, before turning to look at Ruan Zeqiu. Bad mistake. The second she turned her gaze away, the mer who was kneeling in front of Ruan Zeqiu rushed to kneel in front of her. If she were not careful, the mer would have knocked her down.

"Just what do you think you are doing?" Ruan Zeqiu bristled when he saw the actions of the mer. "I already told you that we cannot help you. Why don’t you try taking your child to Priestess Yuan? My sister just got better. There is no need to bother my sister, is there?"

Ruan Zeqiu didn’t want his sister to stress herself out. Even though she was the blessed one, she had worked quite hard ever since she started to get better. First, she took care of Ah Man, who was bitten by the Mist Spider, and then she had to stay awake and take care of him, who was burning with fever. His sister had done enough as it was for the tribe, and now she needed some peace and quiet.

However, Sun Cao came to look for his sister. He told him that his daughter was suffering from severe abdominal cramps and was getting worse with each hour. Though Ruan Zeqiu felt sorry about the little girl, he felt a bit more sympathetic towards his own sister. She had worked hard and she had earned her rest, so why was everyone coming to bother her!?

Sun Cao also felt embarrassed. He didn’t want to bother Ruan Chanchan either; after all, the tribe members were still hesitant to believe that Ruan Chanchan had recovered completely—especially people like Sun Cao, who went to collect herbs in the forest. They were not in the tribe when Ruan Chanchan took matters into her hands, and thus, they didn’t see anything happen in front of them; at most, Sun Cao heard some rumours that were flying around in the tribe.

Though he didn’t dare to trust Ruan Chanchan blindly, there was nothing he could do. Ruan Zeqiu didn’t know that he had already gone to the Priestess and asked her to take a look at his daughter. However, after taking a look, Priestess Yuan shook her head and told him that the child was too far gone and couldn’t be saved.

How could he watch his daughter die in front of his eyes? So even though he felt he was being reckless, he had no choice! He could only place his hope in Ruan Chanchan.

Seeing that the mer was still kneeling in front of her, Ruan Chanchan felt a bit uncomfortable. She said to him, "We can talk things out; there is no need for you to kneel in front of me." As she spoke, she tried to help the mer up, but Sun Cao didn’t let her help him. He kowtowed in front of Ruan Chanchan and said to her, "Please help me, Chanchan. My daughter is sick and I am worried that her condition is going to deteriorate even further. I don’t want to trouble you either, but I have no choice!"

"My daughter keeps on telling me that she is suffering from abdominal pain, and no matter what I do, there is nothing I can do to help her. Her condition is worsening, and I am really worried." He didn’t dare to tell Ruan Chanchan that Priestess Yuan had already seen his daughter and told him that his daughter was beyond saving. He thought that if Ruan Chanchan found out the truth, she would definitely not treat his daughter.

So even though he was feeling a bit guilty for hiding the truth from Ruan Chanchan, he decided to grit his teeth and do it for the sake of his daughter. As long as he could save his daughter’s life, he would willingly serve Ruan Chanchan all his life if that was what she wanted in exchange for helping his daughter.

When Ruan Chanchan heard the mer’s words, she frowned. She turned to look at Xiao Xi and asked, "Can you diagnose what is wrong with his daughter?"

In response, the system shook its ball-like head and said to Ruan Chanchan, "I cannot. The child is way too far for me to make a correct diagnosis," which practically left them with nothing.
