Chapter 344: It’s Our Baby

Chapter 344: It’s Our Baby

Primrose wasn’t exaggerating when she said she was scared. For heaven’s sake, she was truly worried after hearing what the doctors had said.

She didn’t even fully understand her own feelings. Part of her was afraid of being pregnant, but most of her was terrified of losing the little life that had just begun to grow inside her.

"I just sent a soldier to bring Dr. Celdric," Edmund said as he walked into her chamber. He looked even more restless than she did, but at least he tried his best to stay calm so he wouldn’t make his wife more anxious. "He’s the best doctor in Noctvaris, but he might only reach the palace tomorrow morning since he’s still on duty at the northern border."

"That’s alright." Primrose nodded and, without thinking, placed her hand over her stomach beneath the blanket. "I can wait a little longer."

"Wife," Edmund called gently. He walked over to the bed and sat down beside her. "Don’t worry. There’s always a way through every problem," he reassured her softly. "I’ll stay by your side."

Primrose bit her lower lip and held onto the edge of Edmund’s sleeve. "Husband, if I ...," She paused, searching for the right words. After taking a deep breath, she finally whispered, "If I fail to carry your child, will you be angry?"

Edmund froze, stunned by her question. He had told her again and again that he would never leave her no matter what happened, even saying he would rather let go of the baby if it ever put her life in danger.

And yet, for some reason, his wife still clung to the same fear. Even so, instead of getting angry, he gave her the same answer once again.

"No, Primrose." He cupped her cheek with his hand, his thumb brushing her skin with care. "I would never be angry, and I would never leave you. This isn’t just my baby, it’s our baby."

Primrose’s eyes widened slightly as she realized how clouded her mind had become, to the point she was rambling without sense. "Oh ... right. It’s our baby."

"Come here." Edmund opened his arms, and she immediately threw herself into his embrace.

Primrose sank into Edmund’s arms as if that was the only place she truly belonged. Her cheek pressed against his chest, and she could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath her ear, a rhythm that calmed the storm inside her.

His arms wrapped around her tightly but gently, one hand resting protectively on her back while the other brushed through her hair carefully.

She bent her knees, allowing Edmund to scoop her body fully into his lap. He held her close, as though she were the most precious thing in his world, his chin resting lightly on the top of her head.

"Shh ... it’s alright," Edmund whispered softly, his breath brushing against her hair. "You are not alone. Whatever happens, we’ll face it together."

Primrose only nodded in response, letting her husband sway her body gently in his arms. She closed her eyes, listening to the sound of his heartbeat, and allowed herself to melt deeper into his embrace.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. There was no need for words because the comfort of his presence was enough. Edmund pressed a tender kiss against her temple, his lips lingering as if to remind her that she was cherished beyond anything in the world.

When Primrose felt that most of the fear in her heart had faded, she slowly lifted her head from Edmund’s embrace. "I’m fine now," she whispered, brushing away the tears at the corner of her eyes.

Edmund gently tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his gaze searching hers. "Really?" he asked softly.

She gave a small nod before glancing at the clock. "I think Lady Raven will be leaving the palace soon. May I see her for a moment?"

"Of course." Edmund agreed without hesitation, his voice calm and reassuring. "Do you want to meet her outside, or should I ask her to come to your chamber?"

Primrose smiled faintly. "I’ll meet her outside. Besides, I could use a little fresh air."

That way, she wouldn’t feel too overwhelmed by everything. Edmund gave a small nod, then knelt down to help her slip on her shoes.

"Don’t you still have work to do, husband?" Primrose asked gently. "It’s alright, you can finish it first. I’ll be fine."

"Don’t worry about that," Edmund said gently. "My work can wait."

Primrose gave him a faint smile. "I know you’re worried about me, but wouldn’t it be better if you finished everything now, so you can sleep beside me tonight? Doesn’t that sound nicer?"

Edmund thought for a moment before letting out a long breath. "Alright," he gave in at last, though his voice was still firm, "but don’t hide your ring or keep me from seeing you. If anything happens, I’ll come running to you right away."

"I know you will." Primrose’s smile grew warmer. "You always do."

He leaned down to kiss her a few times—soft, lingering kisses that carried both worry and love—before finally forcing himself to leave for his office. Primrose watched him go, her heart lighter, then turned and made her way toward the main door of the palace with Solene walking by her side.

[Poor Her Majesty. She must be so worried,] Solene thought to herself as she escorted Primrose. [I just hope everything will turn out well for her.]

Primrose shared the same hope.

When Primrose reached the palace gates, she noticed Raven standing nearby with Salem. Raven was dressed in a dark cloak that covered her from neck to toe, and a black hat shadowed part of her face.

"Lady Raven," Primrose called softly, her voice warm but a little tired. "I’m sorry I haven’t come to see you sooner."

She hadn’t met Raven again since the day Raven saved Hazelle. Speaking of Hazelle, Primrose had allowed her to wander through the capital with a soldier, hoping the girl could finally taste the freedom she had never once known.
