Chapter 54 Calculation and Counter-Calculation
Three of the seven city walls had already been breached, and at this point, Fang Senyan and his forces were already assaulting the base of the fourth.
A person's personality might allow them to be patient, to retreat again and again, even to give up, and call it bearing humiliation for a greater purpose. But the Human Alliance, already retreating to the fifth wall, could not retreat any further. Another step back meant preparing to enter their own graves.
At this distance, both sides were within firing range. After the lurking Aziz shot and killed seven ordinary soldiers in a row, the Human Alliance had no choice but to order the cessation of normal patrols, replacing them with elite-on-elite engagements.
They were already in dire straits, and couldn't afford any more losses. Each fallen soldier not only weakened their own forces, but also translated into contribution points for the enemy, strengthening their position in a constantly shifting balance.
Faced with Fang Senyan's aggressive onslaught, the Human Alliance had no better option than to mobilize personnel for emergency repairs. After all, the walls of Minas Tirith, except for the first, hadn't been seriously maintained for centuries, leaving massive gaps. Was this last-minute effort useful? Of course! But how useful was difficult to say.
At this moment, Ugak once again donned his thick armor from head to toe and lumbered forward. Though using flesh and blood to assault a solid city wall was a "damaging" act, it wasn't something that Ugak hadn't done before. Besides, they had at least three MTs (main tanks) to buff him before impact.
So, after about an hour of recovery, and motivated by the lure of the "right to court females even when not in heat," Ugak quickly reappeared, revitalized and ready for action, arriving at the base of the fourth wall to begin his run-up.
The fourth wall was covered with mottled marks, and even traces of smoke and fire. These were left by the people who had lived in Minas Tirith for centuries. The clear cracks were even more obvious.
Protected by at least the first wall, peace had lasted too long here. The inhabitants had come to regard these inner walls as the walls of their homes, supports for their furniture, stone barriers against sewage and cold... So, the damage caused by time and residents had accumulated for centuries, and now it was time for them to pay the price.
Ugak's heavy footsteps shook the earth, and another fierce impact caused the fourth wall to groan ominously. Then, shattered stones tumbled down. The building materials might have been indestructible centuries ago, but now, after enduring the tireless baptism of time and space, they could no longer withstand the ravages of metal and brute force.
The Human Alliance, of course, couldn't stand idly by and watch this happen. They began to pour fire in that direction. If the fourth wall were to fall, it would mean that the enemy was at the gates!
In fact, if the enemy succeeded, the fastest route from the first wall to the fifth would be a direct path of no more than four hundred meters. If the walls were intact, they would have to travel several kilometers along a bow-shaped road to achieve the same goal.
This was a test of endurance. The Umbar pirates and the orcs summoned were the best cannon fodder, guarding both flanks and absorbing the enemy's attacks. Ugak rammed the fourth wall six times to breach it, taking half an hour. For this, Fang Senyan and his forces paid a heavy price: two hundred Umbar pirates, one hundred and eighty orcs, and four dead ogres.
What followed was the same old night battle. Darkness might have no effect on freaks like Legolas, but for most archers, darkness remained an unavoidable enemy.
The first to attack was none other than Fang Senyan, who had infiltrated the base of the wall. Though he lacked ranged attack abilities, the rampant Type I virus had successfully infected a large number of defenders on the wall. Coughing and cries of pain echoed incessantly, and the remaining two Ringwraiths continued to swoop down from the air, harassing the defenders with terrifying howls. This combination suppressed at least a third of the enemy's fighting strength!
While the defenders were in disarray, the terrifying Ugak charged out and slammed into the fifth wall!
The decisive battle for Minas Tirith had begun.
Undoubtedly, this was a bloody battle, a battle in which neither side had much room to retreat.
The intensity of the battle could be seen from the fact that Fang Senyan was brought to the brink of death three times! But each time, he narrowly escaped thanks to his life link with Reef.
And this was despite the fact that most of the enemy's attacks were ranged, and Fang Senyan had the added bonus of the freakish Hedgehog title. Even so, it couldn't stop them from focusing their fire on him.
Because once he got close to the wall, the terrifying virus aura would make the archers suffer unbearable pain. If Fang Senyan couldn't be driven away in time, the astonishing impact on combat power couldn't be ignored.
At first, it was because of their underestimation that the mighty Ugak rammed the wall three times in a row, creating huge breaches. If he rammed it one more time, the wall would definitely be breached.
So they had to take countermeasures in advance, using an ancient magic scroll to seal Ugak. Under Sauron's furious interference, this seal lasted for less than two hours, and after being released from the seal, Ugak would be at his strongest.
This act of drinking poison to quench thirst meant that the defenders had to repel the enemy's attack within two hours and inflict heavy damage, otherwise, the enraged Ugak would wreak havoc, and they would have to retreat to the sixth wall! But such a retreat would mean that the morale they had managed to muster would be completely lost. More importantly, if they couldn't even hold the fifth wall for half a day, how could they expect to hold the sixth wall for long?
So in the ensuing bloody battle, both sides poured in all their strength, fighting fiercely. Often, at least five or six soldiers would fall on the road during the charge to the top of the wall, but if a Dark Alliance soldier successfully climbed the wall, he could kill at least three archers who lacked melee combat skills.
The bloody battle continued until dawn. The Human Alliance reached a consensus that the key to this battle was the Mûmakil Ugak, the only one capable of threatening the walls. So after the fifth wall was collapsed by Ugak, the long-prepared Human Alliance launched a counterattack, determined to concentrate their forces and kill this behemoth at all costs!
At Fang Senyan's suggestion, the Dark Alliance became even more aggressive, launching a frontal assault. The final outcome was something no one had expected!
Ugak was successfully killed by the Human Alliance, and more importantly, none of the main plot heroes of the Human Alliance were lost. Even the casualties among the contractors were few. On the contrary, they also hunted down a Ringwraith, and even Bersiven's subordinates died several times.
The reason why the Human Alliance achieved such a result was not because the guys in the Dark Alliance suddenly had a brain fart, but because they turned Ugak into bait and focused their energy on attacking the ordinary soldiers. From the very beginning of the attack plan, the Human Alliance had planned to use these soldiers as cannon fodder to be consumed!
So in the early stages of the battle, they were complacent, thinking that the Dark Alliance had been caught off guard, but in the later stages of the battle, even though they clearly knew the other side's intentions, the Human Alliance was already unable to stop! Having fought to such a stalemate, could they give up on the half-dead Ugak and retreat? Could they leave the Ringwraith with a broken leg and leave?
So, when dawn broke again over the city of Minas Tirith, blood had stained the top of the fifth wall like a river. Only one word could describe it: corpses everywhere.
The Human Alliance could be said to be successful. They not only achieved the planned victory in advance, killing Ugak, who posed the greatest threat to the walls, but also gained extra benefits. In terms of data, they completed one hundred and three percent of their established goals.
However, the price they paid was unbearably heavy! At least two thousand five hundred ordinary Royal City guards died in this raid! Their deaths were not without value, buying a lot of time for the main force's raid. However, if they could do it all over again, the Human Alliance would rather Legolas and Gimli die together than lose these two thousand five hundred men!
Because the total number of remaining guards... was only three thousand!
The relationship between the strong and the soldiers is like the relationship between the trunk and the leaves of a tree. It doesn't matter if hundreds of leaves wither, the branches are the foundation of support. But if all the leaves of a tree fall off, it doesn't matter how intact the trunk and branches are, there is only one end: withering!
Fang Senyan's thinking remained very clear, that was to trade, and he carried it out so thoroughly that he even did things that seemed like a loss, such as using his elite units to trade for the other side's ordinary units.
