"I'll make the arrangements right away."
Lin Mo was quick, and everything was settled in less than half an hour.
Fu Jingshu took his wife to the car.
They arrived at the police station.
They successfully met the finance manager. After some time of re-education, he was a completely different person from before.
He was filled with a sense of dejection.
Seeing Fu Jingshu and Shen Qingqing, his expression didn't change at all. He merely glanced at them and then looked away.
Fu Jingshu asked expressionlessly, "Do you have anything to say?"
The manager shook his head.
Shen Qingqing scrutinized him and then said, "Let me guess why you won't speak. Is it because you have something that someone else holds over you, a handle or a weakness?"
The manager remained still.
Shen Qingqing stared at him sharply. "Your silence means I've guessed correctly. Don't worry, I'll investigate. With our capabilities, it won't be difficult to find out."
The manager suddenly looked up.
Shen Qingqing chuckled softly and pulled Fu Jingshu away.
Behind them, the manager suddenly stood up and slapped the glass, as if he had something to say. However, Shen Qingqing, who had already hung up the phone, couldn't hear him.
She caught a glimpse of the manager's frantic actions out of the corner of her eye but didn't turn back, ignoring him.
People only speak the truth when they are pushed to the brink of madness.
The couple left the police station. Fu Jingshu looked at her left hand. "Does it hurt?"
Shen Qingqing shook her head.
Fu Jingshu looked at her with pity, reached out, and wiped her forehead. The weather wasn't hot, but she was already sweating.
"We should go back to the hospital in a while."
Shen Qingqing sighed.
Fu Jingshu immediately became nervous. "What? Are you feeling unwell?"
Shen Qingqing shook her head. "No, don't be so nervous. I just mean that even if I go back to the hospital, I'll still feel uncomfortable when the painkillers wear off and my arm starts to ache. If you insist on keeping me in the hospital, I'll just feel bored, time will drag on, and the pain in my arm will be more pronounced."
Fu Jingshu listened, his heart aching, wishing he could take her place. "Okay, I'll do as you say. Whatever you want."
The moment she mentioned pain, he was helpless.
So he took his wife back to the company. He had a pile of snacks brought and placed in the refrigerator in the lounge. He also had a new computer prepared, with a large screen, for Shen Qingqing to watch movies.
She sat on the sofa, eating snacks and watching movies. From time to time, she would look up and see Fu Jingshu working.
He was like a radar; as soon as she looked over, he would immediately notice, look up, and respond with his eyes.
His gaze was incredibly gentle.
Shen Qingqing's heart would fill with sweetness.
With him accompanying her, the day passed quickly. Shen Qingqing didn't even feel much pain in her arm, unlike when she was alone in the hospital and felt bored.
In the evening, Fu Jingshu finished his day's work and was about to take Shen Qingqing home when he received a call from the police station just as they were leaving the company.
The manager had attempted suicide.
He was not dead but had been sent to the hospital. After resuscitation, he was still unconscious.
Fu Jingshu told Shen Qingqing the news and then drove them home.
Shen Qingqing asked, "Aren't you going to see him?"
"It's no use going. He's not awake yet."
Fu Jingshu turned the steering wheel, and the car headed in the opposite direction of the hospital.
Shen Qingqing found the suicide attempt too strange, so she called Ke Lin. She had called Ke Lin after returning from the police station and assigned him the task of investigating the manager's situation.
A day had passed, and there should be some news.
Ke Lin indeed responded quickly.
This manager was an orphan with only one younger brother, and they relied on each other. However, the brothers did not have a good relationship. They had argued over a sum of money half a year ago.
Since then, the manager had never returned home. He bought a house for himself outside, while his brother continued to live in the old building in the West District, which their parents had left them.
Perhaps it was too run-down, and the elder brother looked down on it.
Thus, the younger brother had a place to stay.
Shen Qingqing felt that this younger brother might be a breakthrough. "Find this person. I want to see him."
"Okay, I'll do my best."
"Why 'do your best'?"
Shen Qingqing asked. Her assistant had always been energetic and straightforward, never hesitating in handling tasks.
Why was he being so hesitant today?
"He hasn't been home for a long time. A month ago, he posted a 'for rent' sign at his doorstep." Ke Lin's tone was heavy. "I've already sent people to the old district to inquire, but there's no news. And the manager didn't report it missing, so it's probably not an accident. It feels more like he left on his own."
"I'm investigating his whereabouts."
Shen Qingqing felt something was wrong. This was too much of a coincidence. "I understand. Don't worry about this matter anymore, leave it to me. Also, find me two people. I have a use for them."
She paused and then added a few more instructions.
"They need to be smart and perceptive, meticulous, and capable."
"No problem."
After hanging up the phone, Shen Qingqing looked at Fu Jingshu in the driver's seat. "I want to go to the West District."
"To find the manager's brother?"
Fu Jingshu had vaguely guessed it after hearing the conversation, but the West District was not a good place at all.
It was chaotic, and besides some elderly residents, it was filled with idle young and middle-aged people. These kinds of people, besides being loafers, did nothing good.
"I'll go with you."
However, thinking of his wife's stubborn nature, the words "I'll go for you" were replaced with "I'll go with you." Fu Jingshu knew himself well enough.
He couldn't win against his wife.
Shen Qingqing's face instantly lit up with a radiant smile. "I knew my husband loved me the most. If you accompany me, I won't worry about the danger there."
Fu Jingshu gave her a playful glare. "If I didn't go with you, would you be afraid? Would you not go?"
Shen Qingqing was momentarily stumped.
Fu Jingshu chuckled. "However, I'm very happy, Qingqing. At least you're not hiding it from me and going alone."
Shen Qingqing felt a moment of guilt.
If she hadn't been on the phone right in front of him, she might not have...
At Shen Qingqing's strong insistence, the car diverted to the West District. She said it was 4 o'clock, and there was no rush to get home. The missing person should be found as soon as possible.
In short, she had a lot of logical arguments, and Fu Jingshu could only obey.
The car stopped, and Shen Qingqing looked up. The West District was full of old buildings, with much of the outer paint peeling off.
The residential area had property management, security guards, and surveillance cameras.
But when Fu Jingshu and his wife entered, no security guard came out to stop them or even ask questions. They entered very smoothly.
Shen Qingqing looked up. The surveillance cameras were broken.
As soon as they entered the complex, there were dilapidated buildings on both sides. On the stone path in the middle, there were crowded stalls, with vendors shouting loudly.
"Tofu..."
"Cucumbers, two yuan a catty..."
"Scallions, eggplants, and cabbage!"
In such a chaotic vegetable market, there were still elderly people asking for prices, haggling for ages, and then contentedly buying a bunch of scallions.
Shen Qingqing could hardly believe it.
What era was this? How could such a messy place exist? The key point was that it was set up within a residential complex!
Who would set up a vegetable market in the corridor of a residential complex?!
It was simply absurd.
