GOTHAM -

The streets of Gotham were no longer a battlefield. No black rings circling the skies, no hordes clawing their way out of the ground. Just the remnants. Rubble. Smoke curling from broken buildings. Corpses that had been corpses twice now, and others revived, stumbling in shock back into the arms of their families. Gotham had seen hell before, but this time it had spilled from the stars themselves.

Arthur walked the street like someone half-dreaming, his boots crunching over glass. Beside him, her stride light and casual as if she were walking through a park, was Didi. Death herself. She strolled with her hands behind her back, humming to herself, as if she hadn’t just watched billions across the cosmos dance on the edge of her domain.

Arthur finally broke the silence. His voice low, sharp.

"So... wanna tell me now what this is all about? How can something like this happen while you exist? A lesser embodiment of death like Nekron tries to put the universe to death..."

Didi smiled faintly, as if she’d expected that question since the first step they took together. She turned her black, endless eyes toward him.

"The answer," she said softly, "is simple... and complicated at the same time."

Arthur frowned. "Try me."

"I was busy."

Arthur stopped walking altogether. His boots scuffed against the cracked ground. He turned toward her with a look caught between disbelief and irritation.

"Busy? While someone like Nekron openly defies death by pulling people back and.."

He stopped mid-sentence. The words cut themselves off in his throat. His expression changed, just slightly, a flicker of realization cutting through.

Didi tilted her head, smiling wider now, the kind of smile that cut right through him.

"You realized it, didn’t you? You’re the same. You drag back what’s mine, pull the dead into your shadow like they’re toys. In fact..." She leaned in close enough for him to feel the chill of her presence. "You’re far worse in that regard. Nekron was merely using corpses with a bit of memories and some of their will. while you make their very souls yours completely, and yet..." she gestured to the two of them, side by side on a ruined Gotham street "here we are. Casually walking together."

Arthur looked away, jaw tight. "Tens of thousands died on Earth. That’s just the number my shadows confirmed. Millions across the universe, probably billions."

Didi’s voice was quiet, not cruel, but absolute. "And I deal with Trillions. Every second, every instant, across the multiverse. It isn’t a big deal to me. All beings return to me eventually. Besides..." she flicked her fingers lightly, as if brushing away a dust mote "the White Entity restored those Nekron claimed. This was nothing more than a ripple."

Arthur let out a long breath through his nose, eyes half-closed. "Pointless to you, then."

She stopped walking, and in a rare motion, raised her hand to his face, cool fingers brushing his cheek. "Or you could see it differently. Nekron isn’t just defiance. He’s a test. He forces people to confront what life means, why it matters, what they’re willing to fight for. He’s a reminder that death is inevitable." She stepped back, her hand lowering, her smile not fading. "The Blackest Night was always going to come. But so was the Brightest Day. The universe will move on."

Arthur closed his eyes, sighed, and muttered, "You are right... It doesn’t matter. What’s done is done."

"Exactly."

She tilted her head, almost mischievous now. "By the way... I need to ask you something."

Arthur raised an eyebrow. "That usually doesn’t end well for me."

Her grin widened. "Would you like to go out on a date? Tomorrow. I have a day off."

Arthur blinked, baffled. "...A day off. You?"

She nodded, matter-of-fact. "Mm-hmm."

He stared at her. "You’re telling me nobody is going to be claimed by you tomorrow?"

She laughed lightly, tapping his chest with a finger. "Stop asking questions and just say yes. If anything, the one I’m going to claim tomorrow... is you."

Arthur felt heat crawl up his neck, and for once, words didn’t come easily. He muttered, "...Are you serious right now..."

Her smile softened. "Completely."

Arthur glanced up, suddenly cautious. "You do realize thousands of eyes are probably on Gotham right now. Is it fine for you to be here?"

Didi chuckled. "Not thousands. Just one that matters." She tilted her chin toward the sky. "The Kryptonian."

Arthur, subtle as he could manage, shifted his gaze upward. Sure enough, a figure hovered in the distant clouds, golden hair glinting in the light. Only he and Didi could see.

"...Damn."

"She can’t hear us. I’ve muted this little stroll." Didi gave him a knowing look. "So? What do you say?"

Arthur rubbed his face, exhaling hard. "Seems I don’t really get a say in this anyway. Fine."

Her eyes lit up. Without hesitation, she leaned in and hugged him. Just casually, warmly, like they were childhood friends meeting after years apart.

Arthur stiffened immediately. Sweat prickled at the back of his neck. In his head, the words screamed ’I can’t believe the literal embodiment of Death acting like this... and she’s doing this on purpose while Kara is watching.’

He awkwardly cleared his throat, stepping back, coughing into his hand. "Okay. Right. I... gotta go check in with a friend back home."

"I’ll come to your house tomorrow morning," she said cheerfully, like she was inviting herself over for breakfast.

Arthur groaned. "That’s... not a good thing to hear from someone like you."

Her head tilted. "What was that?"

"Nothing," Arthur said quickly. He opened a portal with a flick of his ring, violet light cutting into the air. "Yeah, sure. See you."

And before she could say another word, he stepped through, vanishing in a flash.

Didi stood there in the street, smiling to herself.

****

High above Gotham, the city’s scarred skyline stretched beneath her. Kara hovered in the clouds, her cape drifting on the cool air, her sharp Kryptonian eyes locked onto the pair strolling casually through the ruined streets below.

Arthur.

And her.. ’Didi’.

Kara narrowed her eyes, squinting as if that would help her hear them, but the silence between them was unnatural. Not distance. Not noise. Magic.

Her lips pressed thin.

"...So. She did it again."

The girl no, the woman walking next to Arthur smiled up at him, speaking in that same calm, effortless way Kara remembered from the island during their brief vacation. Kara clenched her fists slightly.

"What’s the secret of their relationship?" she muttered under her breath. "I came here to check on George, and then I spotted this. Arthur, walking side by side with her like it’s a date after an apocalyptic event."

She frowned, frustrated. "Raven did say Arthur doesn’t use this kind of magic. Can’t. Which means... it’s her. She’s the one blocking me from hearing them." Her gaze sharpened. "Just like on that island. The entire time, I couldn’t catch a single word between them. Not one."

Kara’s hand drifted up to her cheeks before she realized she was doing it, her face warming as a rush of bizarre thoughts flooded her head.

"Wait... is it possible? Is she his... his secret magic wife?"

She slapped both her cheeks at once, cheeks blazing red. "What the hell am I even saying!?"

She shook her head hard, blonde hair whipping across her shoulders. "No, no, that’s insane. Maybe... a secret girlfriend? That would explain why he’s always so awkward around her. But then again..." Kara tilted her head, studying Didi below, who looked far too young, far too casual. "Could it be his mom? ...No. No, I’ve met his mother! But maybe a different kind of mother... Wait what the hell am I even thinking!?"

Kara slapped her forehead this time, groaning in frustration, the sound echoing against the clouds. "UGH! This is burning my head worse than fighting the damn Black Lanterns did!"

She folded her arms, hovering in place, scowling at the scene below where Arthur looked of all things embarrassed, while the mysterious woman hugged him, laughed like she owned the world. Before Arthur jumped into his own portal leaving Didi behind.

"I need to ask him myself. No more guessing, no more running circles in my head. I’ll just corner him at his estate and demand answers."

With that declaration, she clenched her fists and rocketed off, streaking across the night sky toward Arthur’s Estate in Gotham.

Down below, Didi slowed her pace. She closed her eyes, the faintest amused smile curling her lips. She didn’t need Kryptonian senses to know what thoughts had been buzzing like hornets in Kara’s mind.

"She’s adorable," Didi whispered to herself, before continuing down the cracked street with a calmness that could only belong to Death itself.
