Metal crack

Chapter 17 Extreme Brain

The work of disassembling the aliens was completed, and all the packing and miscellaneous tasks were handed over to the researchers. Ou Zhanpeng and Xie Yu underwent thorough disinfection and then exited the experimental area.

Upon meeting Ling Xiao, Ou Zhanpeng was surprised to find that the livestream was still ongoing. On the screen was a square metal tray, holding the large-headed dead fish.

A gleaming scalpel entered the frame from outside the view. With a light cut, it made a straight incision on the fish's belly, revealing yellowish flesh and internal organs wrapped in transparent film.

Witnessing this scene, Young Master Ou felt nothing but a sense of deja vu, as if he were in a fish market cutting fish.

Ling Xiao smirked, "This is considered an alien?"

Aliens in movies and TV shows were all sorts of bizarre shapes and forms. While the creature on the screen was unexpected, its novelty was hardly noteworthy.

Ou Zhanpeng remained composed, "Whether something is an alien or not doesn't depend on its appearance, but on whether it originated from Earth. What if this is a case of a degenerated intelligent life form?"

"Degenerated?" Ling Xiao acted as if he had heard the coldest joke of his life. "I could understand if you said its body or limbs degenerated, but tell me, how could an intelligent creature degenerate into a fish?"

Ou Zhanpeng argued stubbornly, "Ignoramus, what terrestrial creature did not evolve from fish?"

Without regard for truth or falsehood, the two of them argued back and forth.

On the screen, the scalpel lifted the peritoneal membrane, exposing various internal organs. "This part seems to be the digestive system. It's evident that this creature's digestive capabilities are very poor, with narrow and short intestines. This should be the stomach, and this connected to the intestines, I can't tell what it is..."

As he spoke, he removed the internal organs from the fish's belly one by one.

It was a serious matter, but the scene, coupled with Gong Yiding's commentary, made it impossible to be serious.

After some manipulation, several delicate organs were arranged on the stainless steel plate. However, after removing all the internal organs, they discovered that the strange fish's abdominal cavity was pitifully small.

Gong Yiding continued his explanation, "Very strange, all of this thing's internal organs are concentrated in the lower part of its body, occupying only about one-third of the fish's body. Now let's see what's on the upper part..."

As he spoke, he continued to cut into the strange fish. Within moments, he cut through the muscle layer. When the remaining two-thirds were revealed on the screen, everyone was stunned by the sight.

"My God!" Gong Yiding's voice suddenly rose. "This looks like a brain... No, this is a brain. The cranial cavity alone occupies two-thirds of the strange fish's body. That means the brain accounts for one-third of the strange fish's total volume and mass! My goodness, if you tell me this isn't an intelligent life form, I'll be the first to refuse!"

The strange fish's brain was not divided into left and right hemispheres, nor was it hemispherical. However, these differences did not prevent Gong Yiding from identifying it.

At this point, the dissection of the strange fish was essentially complete. Gong Yiding lost interest in the remaining minor tasks and handed them all over to others.

Next, the camera switched, and shortly thereafter, the peculiar jellyfish appeared on the screen.

A hand entered the frame and gently tapped the fish tank a few times. With each tap, the jellyfish contracted noticeably. In no time, it retracted all its tentacles to its surface, shrinking into a ball of yarn.

Gong Yiding's voice sounded, "This is another alien. As you can all see, it is very sensitive to sound and light stimulation. Because it is still alive, it has not been dissected yet, but it has undergone comprehensive examination through other technical means."

The image on the screen shifted to a transparency negative: "This is its X-ray, and a synthesized cross-section photo!"

Ou Zhanpeng's eyes widened. On the screen was a brain, encased in a jellyfish membrane, with numerous tentacles attached.

What the hell was this? It was a brain with hair!

Ling Xiao was extremely surprised, "Do aliens really have to look so strange? Tell me, what's the use of so many tentacles on a brain? Even with degeneration, it shouldn't have regressed to this extent, should it?"

Ou Zhanpeng didn't know how to respond.

If you said they weren't aliens, then they had all this advanced machinery, with only a few living creatures in the fish tanks. But if you said they were, then they all looked so strange, as if their brains had come alive.

The image changed to a chart, and Gong Yiding continued his explanation, "The preliminary test results are out. The liquid in the fish tank is ordinary water, or more accurately, water with the highest possible dissolved oxygen content. Those two fish tanks are also not simple. They appear to be made of transparent glass, but when viewed under a microscope, the glass is embedded with many... well, very regular structures, possibly control systems for robots."

The chart switched, and the explanation continued, "And this, both aliens are cellular structures. We found double-helix DNA in the cells, but apart from this, there are no similarities to human cells. We will need some time to figure out the specific functions of the alien cells."

"Of course, this is not important. What's important is that we can basically confirm the life form of these aliens. I must say, it's truly mind-blowing. The world is indeed full of wonders... Next is the strong light experiment!"

As he spoke, he placed the jellyfish on the experimental table. Several specially designed lights were turned on one by one. The dazzling strong light shone on the jellyfish, immediately causing it extreme discomfort. Its tentacles would extend and retract, with nowhere to hide or escape. Anyone could see that this creature was in extreme distress.

Gong Yiding promptly halted the experiment, "It can be confirmed that strong light has a significant effect on the aliens. Next is the sound experiment!"

The sound experiment was simple. Various frequencies of sound were played towards the jellyfish. As the frequencies changed, the jellyfish exhibited different reactions, sometimes calm, sometimes agitated, but mostly peaceful.

Gong Yiding really wanted to try infrasound, but he lacked the equipment to generate it and had to reluctantly give up.

Following this, resonance experiments, electrical stimulation experiments, temperature experiments, and other basic tests were conducted to comprehensively assess the jellyfish's tolerance to external stimuli.

The experiments were not only directed at the fish tank itself but also conducted through different thicknesses of armor. Ling Xiao, who had been listless, suddenly became energetic.

This was a joke. Those miscellaneous experiments were meaningless. These were the projects that truly addressed practical needs. If they could determine what methods were most lethal to the aliens, future battles would be much simpler!

By the time all the experiments were completed, it was already two hours later. Gong Yiding gave his concluding remarks, "Due to limited conditions, we can only achieve this much at present. In the next step, we will conduct more in-depth and detailed research to gain more useful information. Today's livestream ends here. We'll see you next time!"
