Chapter 572 The Letter of the Dead

The last subway, what hidden secrets did it hold? Even Gong Bao Ding was unaware. Why did everyone here, except Wen Wen, seem to know the inside story?

Who had told them?

From the time of the anomaly until now, no one had died. What was the purpose of the mastermind?

Even... was it a living being, or just a contained object?

The more mysteries lay ahead, the more excited Wen Wen became, feeling as if he were playing a puzzle game.

To crack the enigma, finding clues was essential. That was why Wen Wen had flicked the two high school students' foreheads earlier – to display his strength and facilitate information gathering.

"Now, tell me everything you know, or I'll turn the gourds on your heads into candied hawthorns!"

Han Xiaowei and Zheng Zhimin simultaneously clutched their foreheads. Imagining the scene Wen Wen described, they couldn't help but shiver. Candied hawthorns were far too cruel.

But even as they trembled from fear, the two remained silent.

Their gazes occasionally flickered to the unconscious girl, their eyes filled with apprehension and resentment.

"It seems the reason these two are here is related to this girl. But she's a super-powered individual, how could she be kidnapped by two ordinary young men?"

"The age of high school students is a time of rebellion and stubbornness. These two brats are no easy adversaries. Simple threats might only backfire..."

Wen Wen's eyes reddened, preparing to use his vampire hypnosis. Ordinary people, no matter how stubborn, were still just ordinary people.

"Let those two children go. I'll tell you whatever you want to know."

An envelope flew over. Wen Wen caught it with ease and tossed it back, the thrower being the man with an aura of death about him.

Wen Wen asked suspiciously, "Are you being so kind as to tell me?"

The man revealed a smile of unfathomable meaning and said, "You are not an ordinary person, and neither am I... Something might happen shortly. It will be safer for us to join forces then."

Wen Wen shrugged. He had already assessed the man's strength with his mirror eye. He was only at the disaster level, unable to defeat even the third or fourth cub. However, it was possible to extract some information from him.

"Speak, what do you know."

The man chuckled and said, "My name is Hou Morong. Most people in this carriage should have received a letter like this before coming here. You can open it and see."

Wen Wen first conducted a simple check to confirm there were no hidden traps like poison in the letter before opening it and taking out its contents.

The recipient of this letter was Hou Morong, and the sender's name was Hou Muyao. Based on their names, they were likely brothers.

Inside the envelope was only a photograph of a youth smiling brilliantly. His appearance was about seventy percent similar to Hou Morong's, though his clothes were tattered.

"Where is the letter?" Wen Wen asked, holding the empty envelope.

Hou Morong said solemnly, "That is private correspondence between my brothers, not something I can conveniently tell you."

"The youth in the photo is my twin brother. The content actually tells me to come here tonight. Before his soul completely departs, he wishes to meet me to settle some unfinished business."

Wen Wen returned the letter and then walked over to Zheng Zhimin and Han Xiaowei.

"Give me your letters, or I'll take them by force."

The two stepped back, clearly unwilling to hand over the items to Wen Wen.

Zheng Zhimin forcefully kicked towards Wen Wen's groin. Wen Wen made no move to dodge, but his leg felt as if it had struck iron. He clutched his leg and spun.

Han Xiaowei was even more insidious. He drew a pointed ox-horn knife and attempted to stab Wen Wen's eye, but Wen Wen, in the blink of an eye, clamped it shut with his eyelids!

Wen Wen demonstrated a bit of his skill, and Hou Morong's eyes showed a hint of gravity. Wen Wen was more formidable than he had imagined.

The two female nurses looked at Wen Wen as if he were a monster. However, the man in the raincoat showed no reaction, merely smiling at the food as if eagerly anticipating what was to come.

Witnessing Wen Wen's superhuman strength, the two high school students, powerless to resist, could only be searched by Wen Wen, who forcibly took their envelopes.

The material of the envelopes was consistent with the one Hou Morong produced, but the handwriting was different. The letters from Zheng and Han were all written by a girl named Li Youyou.

The photograph showed a girl with a ponytail, a beautiful and sunny girl. However, her clothes were also damaged, with traces suggesting knife marks!

From the letters, it appeared that Li Youyou and Zheng and Han were very good friends. She had been advising the two not to grieve over her death, hoping they would let go of their hatred and live well. Her final wish was to see them one last time on this train.

Wen Wen looked at the girl tied to the handrail, and he roughly understood the entanglement between these high school students.

"This girl is probably involved in Li Youyou's death. They brought her here, perhaps to complete their revenge in front of that Li Youyou... Hatred is not something that can be easily abandoned."

Wen Wen did not know the exact facts, so he did not intend to stop their intentions for the moment. Instead, he returned the letters to them.

Verifying the existence of the letters proved that Hou Morong's words were not false. Thus, he walked to Hou Morong's side, sat down, and asked:

"Interested in chatting with me?"

Hou Morong hesitated for a moment. Recalling Wen Wen's strength and realizing they might be allies soon, he gently caressed the envelope and began to speak to Wen Wen.

"Actually, there isn't much to say. Muyao and I have loved watching 'zombie movies' since we were children. Even after entering high school, I remained obsessed, but as my younger brother, he no longer liked these things."

"I enjoyed taking him to explore various places. Once, in a dilapidated courtyard, we truly encountered an evil spirit. At that moment, we both awakened our abilities and banished the ghost."

"From then on, I realized I was different. I wanted to be a 'savior'..."

Hou Morong laughed a few times self-mockingly, his tone somewhat bitter.

"It was foolish, wasn't it? But in high school, I couldn't realize my own stupidity. Instead, I dragged my brother into many ghost exorcisms. After a few successes, my ego grew, and I led him to find a monster beyond a mere ghost..."

"That monster was a moving, decaying corpse. Its strength far surpassed ordinary ghosts. We were no match for it. In the end, Muyao sacrificed himself to protect me, perishing with the monster."

"Later, while sorting through his belongings, I found a letter he had wanted to give me. In the letter, he said... he didn't want to go ghost hunting with me anymore..."

At this point, Hou Morong covered his face and wept uncontrollably.
