Chapter 15: Feeding on Both Sides

The Disaster Containment Center was a place where Wen Wen felt at ease. This time, he entered through the same spot as before. Turning his head, he glanced at the adjacent cell, where the female vampire was imprisoned.

At that moment, the female vampire was crouching in the same posture, moving slowly, her gaze fixed on Wen Wen with unmistakable hunger.

Her body had shrunk significantly, her once-voluptuous figure now withered and gaunt.

Truly—starved flat-chested.

"It seems she won’t last much longer. I can’t delay any further."

After resting for a while, Wen Wen headed to the central zone to search for a usable container.

All the rooms in the central zone were locked, and without resorting to brute force, there was no way inside.

In a place that looked so high-tech, forcing entry would likely have undesirable consequences. To avoid unnecessary complications, Wen Wen decided against picking locks or breaking in.

Soon, however, he found what he was looking for—outside one of the rooms, an aluminum bowl stamped with a dog’s paw print.

It was a dog food bowl.

After rinsing it clean, Wen Wen examined the bowl with satisfaction. From now on, this would be the female vampire’s feeding dish.

Come to think of it, although no one lived here currently, the containment center had both water and electricity. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to stay here occasionally—far more convenient than a hotel. The only downside was the lack of a personal room.

Every cell in the containment center had a small door for delivering food. Wen Wen filled the dog bowl with a bag of blood and slid it into the vampire’s cell.

The moment she saw the blood, the female vampire’s eyes turned crimson. She scrambled toward the bowl with exaggerated movements, lapping at it greedily with her tongue.

Gradually, her licking turned into sucking, her actions growing more unrestrained. Her body rapidly transformed from a shriveled, dried-up state back to its original curvaceous figure.

Wen Wen could also feel the power within his own body surging, his exhaustion visibly fading.

"So my strength comes from siphoning hers..."

The female vampire had been starving severely. A single bag of blood plasma wasn’t nearly enough to restore her. Wen Wen went back and forth, pouring twenty bags of blood before finally stopping.

By now, drinking more blood no longer provided any noticeable enhancement for the vampire. Though she still craved more, Wen Wen decisively cut off the supply.

He could feel it—his current speed and strength had surpassed even what he’d possessed when he first gained these abilities!

At this moment, the pale, beautiful, long-legged female vampire sat in the cold confines of her cell, cradling the small aluminum bowl in her arms, her alluring tongue flicking out repeatedly to lick it clean.

After observing for a while, Wen Wen’s lips curled into an eerie smile.

"This kinda looks like... Hiss—am I getting a bit perverted here? No, no, gotta stay pure, keep it wholesome and green."

From now on, he’d have to feed her at regular intervals. There were about twenty bags of blood plasma left, which should last a good while.

"Honestly, if a vampire who only needs occasional feeding is already this troublesome, what if I capture a monster that needs daily meals? Ugh, why can’t they all be as low-maintenance as that little ghost?"

In the neighboring cell, the little ghost Qin Shuang had retreated into a corner again. Back when the female vampire had been weakened, he’d mocked her. Now that she’d regained her strength, the cowardly spirit was hiding once more.

What a spineless bully.

Shaking his head, Wen Wen didn’t linger. He headed straight for the central zone.

This time, he planned to stay in the containment center longer—until the vines outside retreated, giving him a chance to escape the hospital.

As long as those vines didn’t surround him like before, the newly empowered Wen Wen should have no trouble breaking free from Ren Zhi Community Hospital.

Besides, he hadn’t visited the containment center in days due to being monitored by the Hunter Association. Now was the perfect opportunity to ask the central system more about the surface and hidden worlds, as well as matters concerning supernaturals.

"Hey, Central System." Wen Wen greeted it casually.

"Hello, Disaster Containment Officer 72580, Mr. Wen Wen," the metallic particles reformed into the suited man, addressing him politely.

"Tell me, can this containment center assign me a couple of staff members to help take care of all these monsters?" Wen Wen picked at his ear.

"Apologies. Your authority level is insufficient," the central system replied courteously.

"What if I capture someone myself to assist me? Would that work?" Wen Wen pressed.

The central system paused. The expression on the suited man’s face flickered slightly.

Listen to this—since when was this something a containment officer should do?

"Apologies. Your current authority level is insufficient," the central system repeated.

"'Current authority level is insufficient'—so there’s a chance in the future, huh? That’s something, at least. Otherwise, once I’ve captured enough monsters, I’d be stuck playing babysitter forever." Wen Wen sighed.

"There are still some things I’d like to ask you about supernaturals."

......

Like the Hunter Association, many topics were beyond Wen Wen’s current clearance level. However, the containment center had its own unique advantages.

While high-level information was restricted, the central system provided far more detailed explanations on foundational matters. Here, Wen Wen could ask targeted questions, and as long as they didn’t exceed his authority, the system would generally answer.

That said, the central system lagged behind the Hunter Association in one key aspect: timeliness.

Much of the information it provided was outdated. As such, Wen Wen couldn’t rely on it entirely—at most, he could use its intel as a reference.

Once he’d asked everything he wanted for now, Wen Wen found a spot to catch some proper sleep.

He’d figure out his escape after waking up. By then, the vines should have dispersed.

......

Ren Zhi Community Hospital.

A nurse with sharply arched eyebrows and thickly powdered skin pushed a small cart to a heavily secured iron door on the second floor.

Her name was Liu Qing’e, head nurse of the surgical department.

Most medical staff working at the hospital knew the western annex was off-limits, though few understood why.

Liu Qing’e was among the handful who did.

She knew that in the former morgue of the western annex grew a bizarre and terrifying plant.

As long as it was fed fresh flesh and blood daily, the plant wouldn’t venture beyond the annex. Her task was to handle this feeding every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

It was precisely this duty that had elevated her from an ordinary nurse to head of the surgical department.

In a hospital, useless flesh and blood were never in short supply.

Amputated limbs, blood left on operating tables, even corpses of those who’d died in the hospital—all could become food for that plant.

"I’m doing this to prevent the plant from harming others. Yes, that’s it," Liu Qing’e reassured herself as she unlocked the iron door.

Though she’d taken the job out of necessity, a deep unease gnawed at her. She knew this work might be wrong, and without constant self-justification, she’d never have lasted.

Thanks to this task, her family enjoyed a better life, her son received a superior education, and she had gained higher status. So she had to keep going!

As she opened the iron door, preparing to use a long pole to dump the cart’s contents inside as usual, something felt off this time.

A blood-red vine slithered out from behind the door—and coiled around her ankle.

Then, an irresistible force yanked her inside...
