Chapter 140: Chapter 140: Let It Go
Due to the accident, the D&C Group’s birthday party was immediately canceled due to the screaming crowd watching the painful incident. Fransisca, now successful in her evil deed, immediately assumed the role of the good sister. She frantically descended the stairs one by one and crouched down beside her brother’s bloodied body.
"Help! Someone please call an ambulance!"
At the same time, Ansel, having just arrived at the venue, immediately panicked upon seeing his ex-fiancée’s helpless condition. He crouched in front of her, watching the blood flow nonstop.
"This can’t be allowed to continue! If this continues, the baby’s life will be lost!" Ansel glared at Fransisca. "What exactly happened?"
Fransisca bit her lip as she paced back and forth. "Actually, I was shocked too. My sister suddenly fell after tripping!"
"Matthias would kill me right now if he knew about this incident." His eyes were fixed on all the invited guests who witnessed the incident firsthand. "Has anyone called an ambulance?!"
Fransisca was furious with Ansel for ignoring her. She had hoped he would at least ask about it, but instead, he asked about the chronology of how her stepsister had fallen down the stairs. That’s what made her hate her stepsister even more.
Ten minutes later, paramedics finally rushed Victoria, still unconscious, to the hospital. Matthias hadn’t managed to get out of the traffic jam, further panicking Ansel. He ended up riding in an ambulance with paramedics to the best hospital in this city.
Ansel waited for his ex-fiancée to be operated on in the operating room for quite a while. He kept pacing back and forth, staring at Matthias’s contact. He had actually contacted Matthias on the way to the hospital. Hearing Matthias’s angry and panicked tone made him unable to face him at a time like this. He also blamed himself for failing to protect the woman he loved. Tears continued to flow freely as he stared blankly into the operating room.
"Victoria, I’m sorry. I should have protected you from the start. What am I supposed to do now?"
At the same time, Matthias had just arrived at the hospital with a panicked expression. He stared at his friend, who was sobbing, making him even more afraid that something bad had happened to his wife.
"Ansel, what really happened? How did my wife end up like this?"
Ansel wiped away his tears for a moment, looking at his friend with a weary gaze. "I’m sorry. This is because I couldn’t protect her properly. If I had left earlier, I could have accompanied her wherever she went."
Matthias rolled his eyes as he sat next to his friend. "You’re so disgusting when you cry. You don’t deserve to cry because you’re not her husband." Finally, Matthias couldn’t hold back the tears that streamed down his cheeks. "I didn’t expect much. I just wanted my wife to be safe, and I’m grateful."
"Actually, I saw that his body was in quite serious condition. He’s lost a lot of blood." Ansel pursed his lips for a moment. "It seems like another tragedy is likely. I didn’t dare continue."
"I won’t blame you for this incident." His right hand patted his friend’s shoulder. "Thank you for telling me this important thing."
"I don’t think I’m worthy of accompanying you here. Besides, Victoria is your wife, and you should be the first to see her when she wakes up."
"I’ll let you know when she wakes up."
Victoria had been in the operating room for quite some time, but she was finally allowed to be moved to a ward. As usual, Matthias had reserved a ward at the hospital to ensure his wife’s comfort during her stay. Now, Matthias wept desperately as he stared at his still unconscious wife. After hearing the devastating news from the doctor that their baby would not survive, he was at a loss for words. The fact that his wife was still alive was enough to make him grateful.
Only now he had to wait patiently for his wife to regain consciousness. He stroked her head slowly and kissed the top of her head deeply.
"Victoria, I’m sorry. I should have been reckless and attended the party with you and told everyone we were married. But I put myself first. Was my mother right from the start? I wasn’t worthy of marrying you?"
His beloved wife immediately showed him her hand movements. Matthias quickly wiped his wet eyelids to assure his wife that he wouldn’t worry too much. He was truly anxious because he couldn’t prove to his mother that his wife was pregnant. All he could do was accept the bitter truth.
Meanwhile, Victoria was still feeling pain in her body from her serious fall down the stairs. Staring at her husband’s teary eyes made her start to fear for her baby’s safety.
"Matthias... how did you know I was here?"
"Ansel told me earlier. He was the one who found you unconscious earlier."
Victoria let out a sob, her voice breaking until she gasped for breath. "What about our baby?"
Matthias shook his head weakly and gripped his wife’s hand tightly. "Tory, the truth is, our baby... leaving us."
Victoria had already suspected her baby wouldn’t survive the fall. Now she could only stare blankly at the ceiling. "My baby... this is all my fault."
"This is not your fault."
"If I hadn’t acted rashly, I would still be able to see our baby born into this world." Her vision was getting blurry from crying so hard that her whole body was shaking.
Matthias spontaneously hugged his wife tightly to calm her down. He was truly terrified by her unusual mental state. For the first time, she acted as if she had fallen into despair.
"This isn’t your fault. Why do you keep blaming yourself? Our baby’s death wasn’t your fault!"
"Then, who did it happen to me? I was the only one going down the stairs and accidentally tripped on my dress!" Victoria looked away. "I’m not worthy of being your wife. I’m truly pathetic and stupid."
