The Trickster King

Chapter 55 Night Falls

Visiting and learning are not for enjoying a comfortable life; you must write down your thoughts and opinions in the evening.

Xiao Xun was much luckier. He and Cui Zhihao played games in the office every day. It had to be said that Cui Zhihao was also a master gamer. Although he couldn't beat Xiao Xun, when the two of them teamed up to play against others, it was pure "noob-slaying."

Cui Zhihao's rank in ranked matches also improved significantly. In crucial games, Xiao Xun could always pull off some flashy moves.

However, as the president's driver, he absolutely could not forget to pick up and drop off the president on time.

The two were in the middle of a team fight when Xiao Xun received a message from Mu Jiahe. He abandoned the push on the tower and stood up to leave, leaving Cui Zhihao utterly bewildered. "What the heck, don't you have any competitive spirit?"

Driving back to the parking garage of Sheng Nuoya Si Company, he sent a message to Mu Jiahe: "Waiting for you in the garage," then took out his phone to check trending news.

Suddenly, he stumbled upon a news report. The main content was: Last night, a major car accident occurred at the junction of the city suburbs, involving four vehicles. There were multiple fatalities at the scene. It was suspected that heavy rain and slippery roads led to brake failure, causing the accident. The public was reminded to drive safely and avoid speeding.

Xiao Xun nodded, "These people are something else! They can even disguise it as a car accident."

Just then, a face appeared on the driver's side window, looking in.

Xiao Xun rolled down the car window. "Director Zhao, is there something you need?"

The person who arrived was Director Zhao Huaide of the logistics department. He smiled, "Oh, it's Director Xiao! Picking up President Mu?"

Xiao Xun nodded, "Yes! The expenses at home are high, so I'm taking on extra jobs to support my family."

Zhao Huaide rubbed his hands and chuckled awkwardly, "Director Xiao is truly joking. I was just taking a look around. If there's nothing else, I'll be going now."

Xiao Xun replied, "Then you go ahead and be busy!"

Zhao Huaide nodded and stood beside the car, not leaving.

Xiao Xun glanced at his phone, then turned to him, "Are you looking for the president for something?"

Zhao Huaide quickly waved his hands, "No, no. Whatever happens in logistics, I can handle it."

Xiao Xun leaned his left arm on the car window, "Then you?"

Zhao Huaide pointed to the inside of the car sheepishly. Xiao Xun turned to look. Besides a suit, there was nothing else in the car. When he looked up, he realized he was blocking another car.

With a sudden realization, he said, "Oh! My apologies, I'll move it for you."

Zhao Huaide apologized with a smile as if he had made a mistake, "It's fine, I'm not in a hurry, not at all."

Even though he said that, how could Xiao Xun be so unreasonable? He drove the car to another spot. Because the car was too long and wide, parking it in the narrow parking lot was a real test of his driving skills.

As he was about to leave, the president happened to emerge from the elevator.

Xiao Xun breathed a sigh of relief, having been worrying about how to park.

After Mu Jiahe got into the car, she only said two words, "Home."

Xiao Xun looked at her in the rearview mirror. Her expression was not good, as if she had just argued with someone, and she looked extremely tired.

He knew that his relationship with Mu Jiahe had become a little closer, but he was just a subordinate, so it was not appropriate to ask.

Having a rare moment of leisure today, after making dinner for Mu Jiahe, she got up and returned to her room before she had finished eating.

Xiao Xun went to the basement. He had been in this villa for so long, but he hadn't properly enjoyed the entertainment facilities here.

Since it was for enjoyment, the gym was ruled out first. He filled the bathtub with water.

Then he swam back and forth in it as if it were a swimming pool. The warm water reminded him of the exhilarating feeling of swimming in the village reservoir during hot summer days when he was a child. The water then was also as warm as this.

Besides his village friends, his cousin also swam with him.

Aside from his cousin, he hadn't seen those friends after they grew up. It was as if they had vanished into thin air. For years, he hadn't seen their parents when he returned home. He wondered how they were doing now, whether they were already married with children.

After soaking until his body felt limp, he lay in the adjacent sauna room for a while, then picked a movie and reclined on the huge sofa bed in the private cinema. Before he knew it, he had fallen asleep.

When he opened his eyes again, the movie hadn't finished yet. He yawned and turned off the movie.

The movie, without a beginning or end, was not interesting to watch.

As he walked to the staircase, he turned off the lights in the basement.

Suddenly, he felt a shadow at the entrance of the basement. He turned on the light, but saw nothing.

He felt a little spooked but didn't overthink it. After turning off the light, he quickly returned to his bedroom.

He thought to himself: I need to discuss hiring a few live-in nannies with President Mu tomorrow. Otherwise, it's too eerie at night.

Although there were security guards patrolling at the entrance, and besides the interior of the house, there were surveillance cameras everywhere, with property management staff monitoring them 24 hours a day. Any illegal intrusion would trigger an alert on the monitors.

He couldn't sleep even when lying in bed. Big houses were just inconvenient. He felt as if he were sleeping in a graveyard, with no one around.

He checked the time; it was only nine o'clock. What was the point of sleeping now?

But there was no computer here for him to play games. It seemed he needed to go back to the office tomorrow to get his computer.

Since he couldn't sleep now, he might as well play some mobile games.

He usually disliked playing them. Most of them were parkour-style games that could be controlled with one finger and had no technical difficulty.

However, the only convenience was that he could play them while lying down.

He muttered to himself, "I wish I could transfer the games from my computer to my phone."

After playing for a while, sleepiness crept in, and he drifted off into a daze.

When he opened his eyes again, it wasn't even dawn yet.

Thinking of sleeping a little longer, he heard the sound of chairs scraping against the floor outside. In the silent atmosphere, the noise seemed particularly loud.

Xiao Xun glanced at his phone. The sudden light was a bit glaring in the darkness. After adjusting, he clearly saw the time, confirming it was four in the morning. Could it be President Mu?

Although he thought so, a primal fear surged through him. He instinctively got up and crawled under the bed.

Because when he was a child, if his mother beat him, he would hide under the bed. Once under the bed, his mother would stop hitting him, so the space under the bed was Xiao Xun's "safe house."

Although he didn't know why he had this feeling, today, this feeling saved his life.

The doorknob turned gently, and the door was slowly pushed open.

Xiao Xun lay on the floor under the bed, covering his mouth and nose, not daring to breathe.

He heard two muffled "pooh pooh" sounds from the doorway – a pistol with a silencer.

Feathers were scattered everywhere from the comforter, and the bullet was lodged in the mattress springs.

Then, a pair of fair, tender feet appeared by the bed. The person forcefully lifted the comforter, revealing nothing.

The owner of these feet should be a woman. She stepped onto the bed and then, holding the gun, went into the bathroom.

Xiao Xun pondered his next move: If the other party didn't find him in the bathroom, they would definitely look under the bed. He should run now. But he wasn't as fast as bullets, and he didn't know if there were any accomplices outside.

Hesitation leads to trouble. Xiao Xun decisively rolled out from under the bed, tiptoed to the bathroom, a vase appearing in his hand.

As a figure flashed out, Xiao Xun exerted all his strength, raised his hand, and smashed the vase down. The person's head instantly split open.

Xiao Xun took out his phone and turned on the flashlight, shining it on the person lying on the floor. He was so surprised he almost cried out. He clamped his mouth tightly and thought to himself, "How could it be you?!"
