Chapter 93: Chapter 93: Sean’s Invitation
Near the border of the Capital, the government had built more human bases, considering the influx of people coming to the Capital. One base wouldn’t be enough, especially when the main base at the center of the city was mostly occupied by the military.
Not far from the gate to the capital, the situation inside wasn’t that far off. Many people don’t have lodging, and they sleep like homeless people on the streets or in front of any building with a porch.
"I hope that you all wouldn’t mind. My place is a bit cramped," Sean muttered as he led them inside his house.
Because of the lack of electricity or people’s activity, it was very quiet at night. Usually, there would be the sounds of car engines everywhere, but the darkness was mostly still.
It was the worst time for people, and they mostly locked themselves inside their rooms, fearing the danger of the unknown. Even more so for ordinary people, who had no means of protecting themselves.
"This place will do. Thank you." Darren looked at the living room; it was wide enough. They could spread out carpets there for the men.
"The women can stay in the bedrooms. I have two empty rooms." Sean led Zerra and others to the bedrooms, letting them put their backpacks inside. Nyra, who had to share a room with Meira, let out a snort in annoyance.
"Your sister doesn’t look happy." Isryn commented after they entered the bedroom.
Zerra clicked her tongue. "She doesn’t like me that much. Maybe she wants to be with you. But I won."
She blinked innocently. She didn’t want to share a room with either Nyra or Meira. Especially the latter. Who knows what kind of trouble this cannon fodder might pull her into?
It was better to avoid the female lead and the vicious cannon fodder altogether.
Isryn raised her eyebrows at that, but she didn’t comment further. She had noticed the estrangement between the Sylvaris sisters.
Although they seemed to have a lukewarm relationship on the surface, they were more like strangers unless a matter that needed to be discussed by both of them came up.
It was Laziel who had a relatively good relationship with her, even though they were most of the time like a cat and a mouse meeting each other.
"They are in the living room. Let’s go out." Isryn looked at her.
Zerra pursed her lips and followed her. Anyway, she was also curious about the condition of the Capital in the apocalypse.
She wanted to find her parents too. Although Cassias had already told her they were most likely doing alright, she couldn’t help but worry.
"Yes, we had a lockdown as soon as the zombies started appearing, so the condition is still under control. The zombies were dealt with swiftly." Sean looked enthusiastic about his temporary ’housemates’.
"That doesn’t mean that there are no zombies here in the Capital. The number is relatively controllable, but there are also mutated zombie animals that are spreading zombie virus like rats and insects. They are much harder to get rid of."
Zerra and Isryn took a seat in the crowd. Sean turned to them. "Miss Zerra and Miss Isryn, where are the others?"
Eh? She realized that Nyra and Meira weren’t there yet. They should still be in their room. Zerra hoped that they weren’t fighting. Otherwise, poor Meira wouldn’t even have a complete corpse left.
"Maybe they are still busy with something," Isryn chimed in.
Sean just nodded, his eyes lingered on Zerra before he imperceptibly shifted his gaze away.
Zerra wouldn’t lie that staying in a stranger’s house like this felt like a déjà vu of Scott’s incident. Sean didn’t look like someone who would eat other people, but who knows?
"What kind of mission were you doing before?" Laziel suddenly asked after he pried his eyes away from his elder sister and girlfriend’s room.
He visibly heaved a sigh of relief when he saw them walking out of the room. He had keenly noticed the strange atmosphere between the two and questioned Meira first about it. The latter sweetly apologized to him, and he couldn’t blame her at all.
When he asked his sister, she merely gave him a succinct reply, unwilling to talk about it. He didn’t want her to get angry at him, so he could only drop the topic.
Sigh, his life was really hard...
Sean flashed him a smile. "We got a mission from the base about retrieving supplies. The amount from the main base isn’t enough. Not to mention, we still had to share with people outside the Capital gate."
His tone was mild, neither happy nor sad about it. It showed that he didn’t really care much.
"By the way, are you all heading to the main base? I will go with you guys after I and others hand over the supplies tomorrow."
"You all don’t hand over the supplies directly?" Zerra asked.
"The base is a bit far from here, around half a day’s journey. It isn’t safe to travel during the night. Another member of mine had another house close by, so she brought them to her place temporarily," Sean answered.
"You all the natives of the Capital?" This time, it was Darren who asked the question.
"No, only I and Sally are from the Capital. The others are from outside. That’s why they don’t have a place here, so they live at the base."
They all conversed until late into the night. Discussing the recent development of the Capital and the findings by the Research Institute. The women went to sleep first, leaving the men in the living room.
Laziel excused himself, followed by other members after receiving Darren’s signal. He wanted to talk to Sean alone.
Kindness always came with a price, and they had to ask about his true intention in bringing them here. The previous experience made them incredibly wary of friendly strangers with ulterior motives.
Just as Cassias wanted to stand up, Darren was quick enough to grab his arm. His mouth twitched. This man was obviously the strongest among them, but he always left it to him to handle things.
Cassias, unlike his famous name in the Capital before the apocalypse, he took more background type presence except for certain occasions.
Darren ignored Cassias, who softly clicked his tongue, and turned to Sean. "Do you know that sudden kindness with no obvious reason is suspicious? You can speak about your intention of inviting us to your place now."
In the dim light, Sean smirked at him.
