Chapter 900: Chapter 900: He Must Have Cried

“You don’t have to do the chores at your place for now. Wait until your hand heals to do them, or I can come help.”

Ahem, actually, she doesn’t know how to do chores at all.

Leng Yan nodded, opened his front door, and asked her, “Wanna come in and sit for a bit?”

Xia Nuo hesitated a little. She hasn’t been to his house yet. But she didn’t dare to go in as his home was unfamiliar to her.

“Xiao Yan.” At this moment, Yin Cui suddenly returned.

Seeing her, both of them were a little surprised. Xia Nuo thought to herself, that woman finally came back. She was beginning to think she might not even know she has a son.

“I’m heading back.” Xia Nuo threw out a sentence, didn’t even look at Leng Yan’s mom, and went straight into her own house.

When she closed the door, she heard Leng Yan’s mom speak unhappily, “Why are you associating with that girl?”

————

The next morning, Aunt Zhao prepared the meals and asked Xia Nuo, “At this time, Leng Yan should know it’s mealtime. Why hasn’t he come over yet?”

Xia Nuo answered her, “His mom came back yesterday, so I guess he won’t come over for meals today.”

“Oh.”

After eating, Xia Nuo planned to go out to buy a comic book. As she stepped downstairs with her bag, she happened to see Leng Yan’s mom being hugged by a man, who even kissed her forehead.

The man was driving an off-road vehicle, and as they sat in the car, Leng Yan’s mom saw her, but she didn’t pay attention to this little girl.

After the car drove off, Xia Nuo didn’t proceed to buy a comic book after all.

She slowly walked upstairs, hesitated at Leng Yan’s door, and knocked.

Leng Yan didn’t open the door immediately, so she stubbornly knocked a few more times before the door slowly opened.

“What’s up?” Leng Yan looked up and asked her, his expression indifferent, as if they were strangers.

Xia Nuo noticed his slightly red eyes and thought he must have been crying.

He always seemed so stubborn and aloof, but inside, he’s actually quite fragile. His mom came back after being away for over a month, but she stayed only one night and left again. This sort of thing would be hard for anyone to bear.

“Have you eaten? Why didn’t you come for meals?” She asked him casually.

Leng Yan lowered his eyes slightly, “I’ve eaten.”

Whether he had eaten or not, Xia Nuo didn’t press further. She smiled and asked him, “What do you want to eat this afternoon? I can have Aunt Zhao make it.”

“Anything’s fine. Do you have anything else?”

“Nothing else, you go inside. I’m heading back too.”

After this incident, Xia Nuo realized that even though they ate together every day, often went home together after school, in that little guy’s heart, he hadn’t reached the point where he could open up and talk about anything with her.

When something bothered him, he would keep it inside and not tell her. Although his attitude towards her had softened, there was still some emotional distance.

Yet, she truly regarded him as a brother.

Sigh, why does the more she thinks about it, the more it hurts inside? Forget it, stop thinking about it, or it’s just self-inflicted stress.

After that day, Leng Yan still came to her house for meals, but his visits became less frequent. He always had various legitimate reasons not to come over, making it impossible to see any issues.

But Xia Nuo was a sensitive child, and she thought she might understand a bit of what he was thinking.

Time passed quickly and the final exams were approaching. Xia Nuo usually didn’t work hard, but when exams came, she did put in the effort.

Even if it’s just cramming, at least it’s some effort.

The intense studying temporarily made her forget about Leng Yan’s existence, and she hadn’t seen that boy for over half a month.
