Chapter 434 War Begins

People are complex creatures, capable of both depravity and greatness.

The shelter door opened, and the frigid air rushed in.

Those preparing to leave the shelter with Lu Chi were saying goodbye to their families. Quiet sobs and reluctant farewells filled the air. Lu Chi glanced at his watch and said, "Time's up, we need to hurry."

Footsteps echoed as over forty survivors emerged, standing behind Lu Chi.

"I can't guarantee that all of you will survive, but I can promise you that I will do my best to kill all the enemies before you are all killed… so that your remaining families won't have to make a second sacrifice, and experience a second separation." Lu Chi took a deep breath, looking at the gaunt survivors behind him, and said in a gentle tone he had never used before, "I wish you… peace."

The EU squad, in teams of four, began a carpet search outward from the ruins where the communication equipment was found. However, the complex terrain and the sudden appearance of mutated beasts slowed their progress.

"Number 4 direction, a mutated beast is approaching." An evolver, looking at the thermal sensor in his hand, warned his comrades.

Soon, a ferocious sea beast attacked from a distance.

A high-incendiary bullet struck it, instantly engulfing it in flames.

"At this rate, I'm afraid we won't be able to search the entire Hai City in fifteen days, let alone find the enemy…" A soldier complained in a low voice, "That enemy is hiding in the city, like a fish hiding in the ocean. How can eighteen of us possibly catch him?"

The companion next to him simply shook his head, not responding.

Everyone knew that the chances of catching the enemy in this situation were very slim, but the captain hadn't spoken, so no one could suggest stopping.

Beep beep beep!

Just then, a call came over the public channel of their communication equipment from another team.

"Coordinates 365.256, our thermal sensor has detected a large number of human heat sources in the area! Unable to determine if they are enemies, requesting support! Requesting support!"

After the team member's voice, the captain's voice followed.

"Team 4 immediately cease operations, stay where you are, don't expose yourselves! All other teams assemble immediately and proceed to the target location!" The captain's voice was excited, "Looks like you've found the enemy's nest. I knew a lone evolver wouldn't pop out of nowhere in this ruined city!"

"This is our first time facing evolver enemies from other countries, we must fight a battle that will attract the world's attention! Move out!"

With the captain's order, several teams searching in the ruins began to quietly advance towards Team 4's location.

Lu Chi was lurking in an abandoned building. In the ruins in front of him, the survivors were scattered, but within a range of one kilometer. This distance was large for ordinary people, but for a Divine Descent-type evolver like Lu Chi, he could cover it in less than ten seconds.

One kilometer is 1000 meters. The world's top ordinary athletes can complete the distance in about two minutes and ten seconds, but even for these top athletes, their body speed data does not exceed 50, while Lu Chi's speed is 480, more than ten times that of the former. Among all the evolvers he had seen, only Bai Mao (White Cat) and Jian Yu (Swordfish) could exceed him in speed.

And with the "Berserk" Divine Descent, his speed would increase even more.

This was the source of his confidence in controlling the situation.

The survivors were now outside, while Lu Chi was inside the building. The thermal sensors could not penetrate the thick reinforced concrete to detect Lu Chi’s location.

Many movies exaggerate the role of thermal sensors. In reality, even the most advanced military equipment cannot pinpoint a heat source through a building.

The reason why the EU’s Team 4 was able to locate the survivors and determine that they were humans without seeing them was because the temperature display on the thermal sensor was different for mutated beasts and humans.

Because sea beasts mostly have scales and are usually cold-blooded, their body temperature is generally much lower than that of humans.

Humans and mutated beasts can be easily distinguished on a thermal sensor.

"This group of evolvers doesn't have any large-scale destructive weapons, so they can't possibly wipe out all the survivors in an instant…" Lu Chi tried to calm his emotions, waiting for the evolver teams to come.

He believed that, given his previous performance of killing two of their soldiers, the enemy would definitely not act alone after seeing so many heat signatures. The remaining eighteen would gather here.

As soon as they all arrived, it would be time for the slaughter to begin.

"Sir, the heat signatures are ahead, the closest is about a kilometer away." Outside the ruins, the eighteen-member EU evolver squad had assembled. They approached silently, and a member of Team 4, holding the thermal sensor, pointed to a spot in front of them.

"…" The captain was silent for a moment, then said, "Number 8, go check it out, be careful to conceal yourself!"

A soldier quickly left the team, running towards the front with the agility of an ape. In the thermal sensor, he was getting closer and closer to the heat source, and he became more and more nervous.

Because the enemy might be a large group of evolvers!

He finally reached a distance of 300 meters. He didn't want to continue advancing, because evolvers had very sensitive senses. They might notice you if you looked at them from a distance.

300 meters was a relatively safe distance. If he was discovered, he would still have a chance to hide and escape.

He hid behind a half-collapsed wall, secretly looking in the direction of the heat source.

He saw a figure.

He lowered his breathing and pressed a button on the communicator. At the same time, the captain and the eighteen members behind him received the signal.

"Enemy sighted, permission to engage?" the soldier asked.

The captain was silent for a moment, then said, "Revenge!"

Bang!

With the captain's order, a burst of gunfire erupted.

A ball of fire exploded, and the survivor was burned to ashes before he could even cry out.

In the apocalypse, this survivor may have been just an insignificant person. Even if he died, no one would remember his name. But in the last moment of his life, he chose to use his life to pave a path to survival for his family.

Insignificant yet great.

This may be the truest life of ordinary people like us.

And with this gunshot, Lu Chi suddenly opened his eyes, he knew, the war had begun.
