Chapter 388 The Belated Miss Nancy
The three stopped and turned their gaze toward the door. Schofield and Dempsdy both wore puzzled expressions, while Feng Bujue remained calm and unperturbed.
As mentioned earlier, Feng Bujue had some expertise in footsteps. Therefore, as the visitor stepped out of the car, fumbling for their keys while approaching the door, a series of deductions had already formed in Jue-ge’s mind.
He immediately spoke, "Female, between twenty and thirty years old, well-proportioned, wearing high riding boots, and currently… slightly anxious."
Before he finished speaking, the door opened. A beautiful, blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman in her late twenties stood before them. She wore a jacket and jeans, and indeed, a pair of leather riding boots.
"Miss Nancy?" Feng Bujue asked tentatively.
"Yes... yes, who are you?" Nancy replied, glancing at Dempsdy in his uniform. "What's happened?"
"Indeed... something terrible has happened." Feng Bujue extended his hand, introducing the two beside him. "This is Detective Schofield from the town; this is Officer Dempsdy."
The two officers each adjusted their hats and politely greeted the lady.
"My name is Feng Bujue, and I'm a detective," Feng Bujue continued.
"Police... detective..." Nancy's expression turned worried.
Feng Bujue used the word "terrible" partly to prepare her and partly as a test. Seeing her reaction, Jue-ge added, "I think... it would be best if your family informed you of the tragedy." He gestured towards the second floor. "They are in the study on the second floor, with another officer. We can go there together."
Nancy hesitated for a few seconds, scrutinizing Feng Bujue and the others, then rushed towards the second floor, not even bothering with her luggage in the car.
Feng Bujue and the two officers followed behind, but Nancy was walking so fast that she quickly outdistanced them.
"Incredible," Dempsdy said. "Mr. Feng, how did you know what the person outside was like? And even call out her name?"
"By listening to the sound of the boots on the steps, the frequency of the footsteps, the subtle characteristics like weight, you can basically guess the gender, weight, and age of the person coming," Feng Bujue replied. "As for the name... I had already learned something about the Lovecraft family, and knew that Kolston also had a daughter who would be coming to the villa. So, when I saw her, based on her hair color, facial features, age, attire, and demeanor, I deduced that she was Nancy.
"Of course... even before the door opened, I suspected it was her. After all, this is a remote location, and there aren't many visitors. If it were a quai..." He paused, almost saying "courier," but managed to stop himself in time, changing his words to "...if this family had ordered goods somewhere, having the store deliver necessities on a regular basis, then it should be a strong man, which wouldn't match the sound of the footsteps just now."
Schofield looked at Jue-ge with admiration. "Worthy of being a famous detective, you can think of so much in an instant!"
"What is this NPC doing...Possessed by Zeng Tai (character from *Detective Dee*)..." Feng Bujue complained inwardly. "Changing all of your lines into Zeng-daren's usual quotes wouldn't make a difference...
"Like 'Master is truly a divine being!', 'You mean...', 'Flawless!', 'Reasonable!', 'Master is absolutely right!', 'What did you think of?', 'How did you think of that?', etc... Just change the title to 'Mr. Feng' and you're all set!
"This seemingly useless but actually indispensable role in detective movies... is a nightmare in this story with only fourteen chapters! If you keep going like this... this great one will inevitably and quickly reveal the truth in order to maintain my brilliant image!"
Feng Bujue finally couldn't help but mutter, "No... I can't hold on like this. A little unreasonable behavior is necessary... Even if I'm treated like a lunatic, it doesn't matter, as long as I solve the case in the end, no one will say anything."
"Huh? What did you say? Mr. Feng?" Schofield asked.
"Ah? Ah... No... nothing." Feng Bujue changed the subject. "I suddenly had an idea that could help us find the murderer more effectively." He waved his hand, gesturing for Schofield and Dempsdy to come closer.
The two officers didn't think much of it and immediately took a few steps closer to Jue-ge, ready to listen attentively.
"My plan is..." Feng Bujue lowered his voice and whispered to the two.
A minute later, he finished. Schofield and Dempsdy straightened up, looked at each other, then looked at Feng Bujue. After a few seconds, Schofield said with a straight face, "That's a great idea!"
"Oh? Really?" Feng Bujue hadn't expected the other party to agree to his inexplicable strategy so readily.
"Actually, when I was a detective in the big city, I often used this trick on those stubborn gangsters and drug dealers," Schofield said. "They're all veterans, and you can't do without some tricks." He paused. "But... those in this villa are all prominent figures. I'm the town's detective, and it doesn't seem right to play this trick on them..."
"And it will be much easier if you, the detective, come forward," Dempsdy interjected. "The police don't need to be responsible for what you say."
"That's great, a win-win situation," Feng Bujue smiled.
As the three spoke, they arrived at the door of the second-floor parlor. Before entering, they heard Nancy's surprised cry, "Oh! God! This can't be true!" The last half of the sentence was choked with sobs.
"Don't be too sad, sister, no one wants to see this happen," Jack replied.
At this moment, Feng Bujue and the others entered the room. Scanning the room, they saw: on the sofa, Officer Mark, who was in charge of the questioning, was taking a statement from Mrs. Carroll, while Mrs. Odette was gently comforting Carroll; not far away, on a chair, sat Mr. Kolston, his face etched with worry, talking to Dr. Powell beside him; Barton was alone in another corner of the room, looking restless; and Jack was standing not far from the door, Nancy crying in his arms.
"Officer, please come over here," Feng Bujue said to Mark.
Mark turned his head, first glanced at Schofield's face, and after seeing his superior nod, he walked over and said to Jue-ge, "What can I do for you?"
"Yes..." Feng Bujue made eye contact with everyone in the room, then deliberately raised his voice slightly and said, "Please, a word in private."
