Chapter 82 Smuggling
Fatty and Joey spent several hours on the plane.
After a bumpy ride, the transport plane landed smoothly. When Fatty exited the cabin, he found himself in a wasteland. The daytime was filled with rolling sand and dust, a desolate and bleak sight.
Based on the sun's position and the wind direction, Fatty determined that they were currently in the eastern hemisphere.
The instructor drove the armored vehicle out of the transport plane and ordered all the mercenary members to get in. The armored vehicle set off. The journey was bumpy. On the barren land, packs of wild wolves chased after the moving behemoth, waiting for an opportunity to hunt.
The pack grew larger and larger, getting closer and closer to the armored vehicle.
One of the team members took out a slingshot and a few steel balls from his pocket, opened the sunroof, pulled back the slingshot, and fired.
Although the armored vehicle was constantly jolting, the slingshot marksman never missed. Every steel ball accurately hit a wild wolf's eye. After continuously knocking down several leading wolves, the pack became fearful and stopped chasing.
Fatty thought to himself, among these dozen or so people, each of them probably has unique skills. If they really started fighting, even in a one-on-one fight, he might not have the upper hand.
The armored vehicle drove continuously for a day and a night, with almost no stops. During this time, the food mainly consisted of quick-to-eat military rations. Every six hours, they would stop for ten minutes to allow everyone to relieve themselves.
During a rest stop, Joey asked Fatty once if they should take the opportunity to slip away. Fatty shook his head, indicating that the time wasn't right yet, "We're in a wasteland right now. We don't know where we are, and there are packs of wolves here. We might not be able to walk out of here on our own two legs."
Seeing that Fatty wasn't confident, Joey temporarily gave up the idea of escaping.
The armored vehicle finally stopped in front of a continuous mountain range. The instructor ordered all team members to get out and head towards the mountains on foot.
Fatty felt that these mountains were very familiar, but he couldn't remember where he had seen them before.
After abandoning the vehicle and switching to walking, Joey's physical weakness began to show. It was difficult for her to keep up with the pace of the main group. Her legs were getting heavier and heavier, and she felt like her thighs weren't listening to her, shaking violently. With every inch the slope increased, Joey felt it was becoming increasingly difficult to move forward.
Seeing that she couldn't keep up, Joey began to feel anxious. Fatty noticed Joey's situation and carried her on his back, using the excuse that Joey had sprained her ankle to explain it to the others.
After resting for a while, Joey felt that her body was gradually adapting to the high-intensity march, so she got off Fatty's back and tried to walk on her own.
After another two days and two nights on the mountain road, they camped at night to rest. To prevent wild animals from attacking, the team also arranged for people to stand guard at night. After climbing several mountains in a row, the instructor led them to hide on the back of the mountain. The instructor then told everyone that they were going to cross the border this time, and they had to wait for the army to change patrols before they had a chance to sneak past quietly.
Fatty used his reconnaissance skills to climb to the top of the mountain and look towards the opposite mountain. The garrison situation on the opposite mountain looked very familiar to Fatty. Later, Fatty suddenly realized and couldn't help but curse in his heart, what the hell is going on?
This was the first time Fatty had smuggled himself back into his own country from another country.
When it was time for the garrison to change patrols, the instructor called the team members to follow him. He warned, "We only have three minutes. We must stick close to the mountain and not make any noise. If anyone makes a mistake, we're all done for!"
The commander led everyone to quickly climb to the top of the mountain, and then quickly moved down along the mountain. During this time, Fatty and Joey didn't even dare to breathe loudly. Fortunately, the team successfully sneaked in before the patrol change.
Fatty never expected that this operation would actually be within China, and they had to transport combat forces into the country by illegally crossing the border. Speaking of which, entering and crossing the border with live ammunition, to put it mildly, was smuggling in addition to smuggling guns, but to put it seriously, it was a military operation, and they could lose their lives.
Fatty thought to himself that the Z organization really regarded human life as worthless, and was willing to spend a lot of money to find people to risk their lives for an operation. But when he thought about the Z organization's way of doing things, it was no wonder they would do this.
After passing through the important military area, everyone's tense nerves relaxed. The next step was to avoid the army's patrol areas and detour into Xinjiang.
After crossing the mountainous area, the group finally arrived on the main road. Although the road conditions were not good, it was much better than the wilderness outside the country at the beginning.
The Z organization had already arranged for someone to meet them by the main road. The person responsible for meeting them was a young Uighur lad driving a farm truck.
The young man first communicated with the instructor in Uighur, but the instructor couldn't understand at all. Then, the young man began to try to communicate with the instructor in not-so-fluent Chinese.
"Get on the car, you all." The young man pointed to the truck bed, signaling them to come up.
The instructor basically guessed what the young man meant, but it was a bit difficult to have such a group of well-trained people sit in a truck full of chicken feathers, duck feathers, and sheep droppings.
The young man was a little anxious: "Quickly, quickly!"
There was no way around it. Everyone's identities were still very sensitive here, so the instructor took the lead and climbed into the truck bed, then ordered everyone to climb up in a commanding tone.
Everyone covered their mouths and noses and endured the nausea as they climbed into the truck. But that wasn't the end of it. The young man also took out a large tarpaulin and covered the truck bed. He told everyone to squat down. Some people were already getting impatient at this point, but the instructor suppressed them all.
Once the tarpaulin was covered, tied, and bundled, no one could tell that there was anyone in the back of the truck. The young man walked into the cab with satisfaction and started the truck.
After a long journey, they still had to ride in a "manure truck" into the city. These Blackwater Company elites were starting to get a little angry.
In the 1980s and 1990s, smuggling was rampant in the northwestern border areas of China. A large number of criminals smuggled guns and ammunition from abroad into the country, creating factors of social instability. Later, the Production and Construction Corps decided to invest in building a large number of checkpoints on border maps and transportation routes in order to cut off smuggling routes. After a period of governance, the occurrence of smuggling incidents was effectively reduced.
The truck encountered several inspections along the way, but the young man seemed to be very familiar with the people at the checkpoints. He offered cigarettes and fawned over them. The truck reeked of chicken and duck droppings, so the people at the checkpoints were too lazy to lift the tarpaulin to check. They simply looked at it from the outside, felt that there was nothing wrong with the truck bed, and readily let them pass.
The tarpaulin-covered truck bed was smelly and hot, and with poor ventilation, five or six people were already feeling short of breath. Joey's physique was originally not as good as the others. She had been feeling nauseous and wanted to vomit before, and now she was feeling hypoxic and about to faint.
