Chapter 169 Skill Interruption
The level suppression of six levels is indeed not to be underestimated. Six anti-tank shells caused less impact than a normal attack. Luckily, the Yan Witch was a mage-type, lacking a naturally strong physique. If it were a strength-type Boss, six anti-tank shells would be like floating clouds under a six-level suppression.
Ye Xiu and Su Mucheng were well aware of this, so they didn't have high hopes, only using it to buy a little time.
Even so, the Yan Witch continued to approach. As soon as she entered her attack range, she raised her staff and with two booming sounds, two large fireballs seemed to tear through the air, falling towards their characters.
Even while casting, the Yan Witch continued her pursuit.
Skills requiring incantation usually can't be cast while moving, but there's an exception: the elemental mage. After learning the level 30 passive skill "Motion Casting," elemental mages can cast spells while performing various actions. Of course, their movement speed is greatly reduced, requiring an increased level of Motion Casting to improve speed under these circumstances. However, even at max level, they only have 50% of their normal speed.
Although the Yan Witch was a Boss, she followed the skill settings. During the process of releasing the two large fireballs, her movement slowed significantly. Ye Xiu and Su Mucheng not only easily dodged the attacks but also took the opportunity to increase the distance between them.
The Yan Witch's electronic IQ really wasn't high enough. She didn't understand the need to fully catch up before attacking, always striking as soon as she had the means, slowing herself down each time. As a result, she maintained a consistent distance with Lord Grim and Dancing Rain, while the goblins were getting further and further away, gradually disengaging from the battle.
These goblins and the Yan Witch didn't have a linked relationship; they were just regular monsters in the leveling area. The Yan Witch had spawned for too long and hadn't been killed, so they gradually gathered around her.
They each had their own aggro range. As they moved further from their target and gradually disappeared from sight, the goblins eventually wiggled their butts and went back to their own business.
Ye Xiu and Su Mucheng were just circling with the Yan Witch. Bosses have activity ranges, and it was impossible to bring the Yan Witch from the Fire Forest to the Frost Forest.
"Coordinates 1658, 7542!" Ye Xiu called out to Tang Rou and Steamed Bun Invasion. He and Su Mucheng were retreating and killing at the same time, seemingly kiting the Boss, but in reality, their attack rhythm couldn't be tight enough. The Boss's health would regenerate automatically. Although it wouldn't negate all the damage, even without considering mana consumption, they might not be able to take down the Boss even after a whole day of grinding.
Tang Rou and Steamed Bun Invasion received the message and rushed over. They saw that all the goblins led by the Yan Witch were gone. Now, Ye Xiu and Su Mucheng didn't need to run around with the Yan Witch anymore and had started hunting her down.
"We're here!" Steamed Bun Invasion roared, his brick arriving before him. The flying brick smashed into the back of the Yan Witch's head, momentarily staggering her, but the effect was fleeting.
"Aim carefully! Stuns aren't very useful, but they can at least be used to interrupt skills!" Ye Xiu instructed Steamed Bun Invasion.
Even a brief stun was still a status effect. If the Yan Witch was chanting a spell, it would definitely be interrupted. Of course, this was on the premise that the stun effect triggered. Otherwise, the Yan Witch's super armor state during chanting meant that normal attacks couldn't interrupt her skills.
"And Poison Needle, pay attention to using it!" Ye Xiu reminded Steamed Bun Invasion.
Poison Needle is a level 30 Rogue skill. Despite the name, it doesn't deal poison damage. The skill has two effects: a chance to inflict bleeding and a guaranteed break of super armor.
In the super armor state, you can't be knocked down, launched, pushed back, interrupted, or have your moves countered. Unless a grappling skill is used, the target can't be moved.
Poison Needle is a skill that can eliminate super armor. At the lowest level, it can cause the target to lose super armor for 5 seconds. At the highest level, this time can be as long as 10 seconds.
Under the Yan Witch's powerful level suppression, Poison Needle obviously wouldn't achieve the 5-second break of super armor. However, Steamed Bun Invasion still followed Ye Xiu's instructions, maneuvering around the Yan Witch, waiting to use Poison Needle.
The Yan Witch's fiery red glow appeared whenever she attacked or cast a spell, indicating her super armor state. In this state, the Yan Witch was unstoppable. Neither normal attacks nor skills could prevent her actions. Suddenly, she spread her arms, intensifying the surrounding fire. Within a circle around her, even the air seemed to crackle with sparks. The dry trees and yellow grass burst into flames.
Meteor Starfall!
This was the Yan Witch's large-scale area-of-effect ultimate, summoning a rain of fiery meteors to attack targets within range.
"Poison Needle!" Ye Xiu didn't have time to explain the spell. As soon as the Yan Witch started, he immediately shouted.
Prepared in advance, Steamed Bun Invasion immediately used Poison Needle upon hearing Ye Xiu's instruction, without asking why. The fire around the Yan Witch's body instantly faded. Steamed Bun Invasion, being as cautious as ever, feared retaliation and immediately slipped behind a nearby tree after using Poison Needle.
"Why are you hiding?" Ye Xiu was amused by Steamed Bun Invasion's behavior. Since Steamed Bun Invasion wasn't seizing the opportunity, he had to salvage the situation. Fortunately, Lord Grim wasn't too far from the Yan Witch. A Sky Strike launched the Yan Witch into the air. Although, due to level suppression and the Boss's strong resistance, this launch was more like tripping the Boss, Ye Xiu quickly followed up with a Falling Flower Palm, slamming into the Yan Witch.
Steamed Bun Invasion's Poison Needle only broke the super armor for about a second. But in that one second, Ye Xiu seized the opportunity and used two skills to interrupt the Yan Witch's Meteor Starfall.
"Why are you running? After Poison Needle, you should use a skill to interrupt her yourself!" Ye Xiu criticized Steamed Bun Invasion. This was supposed to be a practice opportunity for Steamed Bun Invasion, but the guy was too cautious.
"I was afraid she had some powerful moves," Steamed Bun Invasion said quickly.
In the time it took to say those few words, the Yan Witch had already gotten up and charged back into the fray. Tang Rou's Soft Mist quickly met her, surrounded by three magic lances: the neutral and ice attributes, and now a fire attribute magic lance generated from the Falling Flower Palm attack. The fire attribute magic lance increased strength. Soft Mist's arm was covered in a red magical aura, the fire attribute magic lance effect, similar to the fire buff the goblins received from the Yan Witch earlier.
A Sky Strike launched upward. As expected, the Yan Witch in super armor didn't budge, not even a twitch. She swung her staff horizontally, the runes on the tip creating flames as they rubbed against the air. The Yan Witch's attacks always carried fire attribute.
The staff was extremely long, and the horizontal sweep covered a wide area, forcing Steamed Bun Invasion back outside the circle. Soft Mist, who was within the circle, didn't have time to retreat. She quickly crouched to dodge the attack, followed by a roll to avoid a string of flames thrown by the Yan Witch.
Su Mucheng's Dancing Rain was a long-range attacker, so she didn't need to get close. She charged a laser cannon from afar and fired. The beam impacted the Yan Witch, almost passing through her completely. Despite the impressive power, it only dealt damage in the super armor state. The Yan Witch continued doing what she was doing, striking a pose to unleash a big move. Steamed Bun Invasion panicked, "Poison Needle is still on cooldown!"
Before he could finish, Ye Xiu's Lord Grim used a Circle Swing, stabbing the Yan Witch and throwing her out, interrupting the skill. Grappling skills ignored this kind of super armor.
Interrupting a skill like this seemed simple on paper, but for ordinary players, nine out of ten couldn't do it, and the one who did would have done it by chance.
Boss skills weren't slow enough to allow you to see them and then rush over to use a grapple or hold to interrupt them. The Yan Witch's chants were instantaneous. Fireballs and fire strings were chanting spells, but the Yan Witch chanted so fast that the skill bar flashed and disappeared, almost like instant-cast spells. Even with a large-scale ultimate like Meteor Starfall, if Steamed Bun Invasion had been a step slower, there wouldn't have been enough time to complete the skill after the Poison Needle.
One second, the opportunity was only one second, sometimes even less.
Completing an interruption in such a short time required judgment, hand speed, and precise micro-control.
Back when fighting the Frost Forest Spiders and Frost Saen, Blue River also had a super armor breaking grapple skill similar to Circle Swing called "Wave Wheel Slicer," but why didn't he use it? Because he wasn't confident he could pull it off.
What Ye Xiu could do didn't mean ordinary players could replicate it. Even Tang Rou, with her fast hand speed, lacked the experience to judge the situation. If she used Circle Swing to interrupt, the timing might be off. Too early, and the Boss's skill wouldn't come out, triggering the skill again, and your Circle Swing would be on cooldown. Too late, and the attack would land, interrupting your Circle Swing instead.
Lord Grim was a multi-class character. Besides Circle Swing, he could use Back Throw, Wave Wheel Slicer, and other grapple skills to break super armor, making it easy for him to interrupt the Yan Witch's ultimate. Letting Steamed Bun Invasion use Poison Needle was just a way to give the newbies some practice. Super challenges like this Big Boss were about practicing skill interruption techniques.
