Chapter 305: Chapter 305: The Ploy of Injuring Oneself to Win Trust
An Mi mumbled to herself for quite a while before finally taking the driver’s seat.
She gave herself a lot of mental suggestions and encouragement, reviewing everything she had learned in driving school in her mind before barely managing to start the car.
But her driving speed was really, really slow, probably only a little faster than a snail.
Whereas Wan Muqi was very patient, sitting especially quietly in the passenger seat without interfering, just letting her drive.
Still, he had to admit he admired this young lady; her mental fortitude was genuinely impressive. No matter how much the cars behind honked, she remained unfazed, focusing solely on driving.
In An Mi’s mind, as long as she didn’t run any red lights, didn’t rear-end anyone, didn’t change lanes, and didn’t speed up, she would be safe.
What was usually a twenty-minute ride to the hospital took her more than forty minutes.
After safely arriving at the hospital, she finally breathed a sigh of relief.
It was only after stopping the car that she realized there was still a feverish patient in the passenger seat.
“So… sorry, I didn’t mean to drive so slowly,” she hurriedly apologized.
Wan Muqi looked at her, his complexion a bit rosy due to the fever.
“It’s okay, safety comes first. You did great. You’ll get used to it after a few more times.”
An Mi noticed beads of sweat forming on his forehead and instinctively reached out to touch it, “You’re burning up.”
Immediately after, she quickly unbuckled her seatbelt, got out of the car, and helped him out from the passenger side.
Then she rushed to the emergency room.
Afterward, she ran back and forth to register him, pay the fees, and finally, twenty minutes later, he was hooked up for an IV infusion.
Not even sitting for a few minutes, An Mi began to ask him various questions:
“Are you hungry?”
“Are you thirsty?”
“Do you have a headache?”
“Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?”
“…”
Wan Muqi didn’t expect her to ask so many questions.
But he answered each one of them.
“Don’t you have class this afternoon?” Wan Muqi said, “I’m okay now; you can go back to school first.”
An Mi glanced at the time, “No rush, my class is at three in the afternoon.”
Leaving him alone here, she didn’t feel quite assured.
“…”
Xiao Si came down to do a consultation in the emergency department, just finished, and was about to leave when, passing by the infusion area, he caught a glimpse of a familiar face with the corner of his eye and immediately stopped in his tracks.
Then, he saw Wan Muqi sitting in the infusion chair, with a young girl seated next to him.
But An Mi was sitting with her back to him, so he didn’t see her face.
Immediately, he took out his phone and dialed Wan Muqi’s number.
It rang several times before Wan Muqi answered.
Seeing the caller was Xiao Si, Wan Muqi didn’t really want to answer, but An Mi had just gotten up to fill a water bottle, so he took the call.
As soon as Xiao Si spoke, he asked, “Where are you?”
Wan Muqi: “What’s the matter?”
Xiao Si: “Yes, a big issue.”
Wan Muqi frowned; this guy usually didn’t look for him unless it was for something unimportant, and he wasn’t too keen on entertaining him.
“I’m busy, find someone else.”
After that, he was ready to hang up the call.
“Old Wan, your methods are quite something,” Xiao Si said slyly: “Usually as strong as an ox, but now you’ve landed yourself in the hospital chasing a girl, this playacting trick isn’t bad.”
Upon hearing this, Wan Muqi raised his eyes only to see Xiao Si standing outside the infusion room.
Xiao Si looked at him, raised his eyebrows suggestively, and smiled somewhat mischievously.
Wan Muqi: “…”
Xiao Si: “Now that I’ve caught you red-handed, you can’t deny it anymore, can you?”
That day at the Gold-plated Club, no matter how much he asked, he wouldn’t say.
He knew it—lawyers have mouths that deceive the devil!
Wan Muqi said exasperatedly: “Admit what? I’m telling you, if you spread rumors, I will sue you for slander; don’t forget what I do for a living.”
Xiao Si: “…”
Damn!
He actually threatened him!
“Wan, that’s not very righteous of you. I was just sharing with everyone that the ancient, thousand-year-old tree has finally bloomed, and here you are, threatening to pin such a huge, black hat on me. How could you have the heart to do that?”
“Try me and you’ll find out.”
“…”
Before he could figure out how to threaten back, Wan Muqi added: “If the incident at the hospital today gets out, you’d better be ready to receive a letter from my lawyer.”
Xiao Si laughed in frustration: “I mean, there are so many people in the hospital, isn’t it normal for things to get out? How is that related to me? I’m not taking the blame for this.”
Wan Muqi: “I don’t care, you just better hope it doesn’t get out!”
Xiao Si pushed his tongue against the soft flesh of his cheek, “Damn it, I must owe you something, right?”
He had just happened to pass by, saw it, and gossiped, how did he get involved in a lawsuit?
Wan Muqi stopped paying him any attention and hung up the phone directly.
At this moment, An Mi had just finished filling up water and came back. As she turned around, Xiao Si caught sight of her face.
“Damn! Isn’t this Ah Yan’s little auntie?”
Suddenly, an idea flashed through his head.
No way?
Isn’t Ah Yan’s little auntie still in school?
He seemed to remember Su He mentioning that her sister was studying medicine at A University. And all of a sudden, Wan has taken up a teaching position at A University…
Can there really be such a coincidence in this world?
If it’s not a man-made coincidence, he wouldn’t believe it if he was beaten to death!
Wan, that sly old fox, is really something – aiming for a younger girl!
“Mr. Wan, have some water.”
An Mi handed him the cup of water.
Wan Muqi took it: “Okay, thanks.”
…
Two hours later.
An Mi saw that his complexion had improved a lot, he had some IV drips, and his fever had subsided.
“Can you get back on your own?” she asked.
Wan Muqi coughed slightly: “I can.”
An Mi sighed, “Well, it’s better to be thorough. I’ll just take you back first.”
“No need, I will call my assistant over, send you back to school first, and then I’ll go home.”
The man said, and then picked up his phone, dialing his assistant’s number.
He briefly said something and then hung up.
After hanging up, he saw that An Mi kept looking at him.
“What’s the matter? Is there something on my face?”
An Mi suddenly realized and said belatedly, “You have an assistant, then why did you ask me to drive just now? You could have just called your assistant, right?”
“…”
The man coughed lightly, “It was urgent just now, and I forgot about him.”
An Mi: “…”
About twenty minutes later, the assistant arrived.
Assistant: “Mr. Wan.”
The assistant saw An Mi standing beside the man and also respectfully called out: “Miss An Mi.”
An Mi: “Just call me An Mi.”
The assistant subconsciously looked at Wan Muqi, his eyes seeming to ask, “Can I call her that?”
The man didn’t respond to him, but directly said, “First take her back to A University, then home.”
Assistant: “Oh, okay.”
An Mi cooperated and handed over the car keys to the assistant.
She politely said, “Thank you for your hard work, Assistant Wu.”
Assistant Wu took the keys: “It’s not a bother, it’s part of my job.”
The man got into the back seat first, and An Mi originally intended to sit in the passenger seat, but the passenger door was not unlocked, so she turned and opened the back seat door instead.
Half an hour later.
The car stopped at the roadside, a hundred meters away from A University.
The car was too conspicuous, and if it appeared in front of the school gate and An Mi got out of it, there was no guarantee that it wouldn’t lead to gossip.
So Wan Muqi asked his assistant to stop here.
“When you get back, remember to eat something first to fill your stomach. Don’t take medicine on an empty stomach. Have some food, then get a good sleep,” Su He said, giving him the medicine before getting out of the car, followed by a series of instructions.
Then, worried he might forget, she turned to the Assistant Wu in the driver’s seat and politely said, “Assistant Wu, I’d appreciate it if you could remind him to take his medicine.”
Assistant Wu glanced at the rearview mirror and responded, “Okay.”
“Then I’ll be going,” An Mi said, looking at the man.
The man uttered a “hmm” in acknowledgment.
Not until An Mi’s figure had entered the school gate and disappeared from their sight did Assistant Wu speak up: “Mr. Wan, shall we go?”
Wan Muqi gave him a look, “What, you want to stay here and get caught by the traffic police?”
Assistant Wu: “…”
After finishing her afternoon classes, An Mi immediately sent a few WeChat messages to Wan Muqi asking about his condition.
“Did you take your medicine?”
“Do you still have a fever?”
“Is there any discomfort in your body?”
“You didn’t take the medicine on an empty stomach, did you?”
Wan Muqi had just woken up, and his phone on the bedside table vibrated a few times.
He opened WeChat and saw An Mi’s familiar string of questions. His lips curled slightly; this young girl really was interesting.
She really thought of him as a little kid.
He had intended to type, but feeling too lazy, he simply left a voice message: “Hmm, much better, no fever. Just feeling a bit weak.”
Listening to his somewhat hoarse voice, An Mi immediately advised, “Oh, it’s good that the fever is gone. Remember to drink more hot water.”
Wan Muqi didn’t quite know how to respond to that.
An Mi waited a while but didn’t receive a reply. Worried that he might have fallen when he got up, she dialed his number.
The call was promptly answered.
“An Mi, what’s up?” Wan Muqi hadn’t expected her to call directly.
Hearing his voice, An Mi instantly felt relieved, “Oh, nothing. I was just wondering, have you had dinner yet?”
Wan Muqi: “No, I’ll just order some takeout later.”
An Mi: “You’re sick, how can you eat takeout? The cleanliness of the food outside can’t be guaranteed. Don’t you have a housekeeper? Doesn’t she prepare dinner for you?”
Wan Muqi said, “The housekeeper had to deal with something at home today and took the day off. I don’t usually come back for meals when I’m alone, so she generally doesn’t cook.”
An Mi thought of how, during her visit to his house today, she saw the kitchen was equipped with everything necessary, but it didn’t seem to be used often.
She asked, “Can you cook by yourself?”
The man answered with firm confidence: “No.”
Then he added, “I eat takeout often, and it’s been fine. Don’t worry about me, go take care of your own things. Don’t let my affairs delay you, I can take care of myself.”
If people like Xiao Si and Gu Beiyan heard him say this, they would just say one thing: “Too naive!”
Naïve indeed!
But An Mi said, “Wait for me at home.”
She had not found the chance to properly thank him for Yang Jie’s matter, so she decided to repay him in this way, to the best of her ability. That’s how she comforted herself, anyway.
An hour later, An Mi appeared at the entrance of the complex carrying a bag of stuff.
The security uncle remembered her, firstly because she was beautiful, and secondly because she was polite and looked sweet and well-behaved.
“Young lady, you’re here again?” the security uncle asked with a smile on his face.
An Mi: “Uncle, can I go in? Or do I need to make a call?”
Security Uncle: “No need, no need, just go on in.”
As he spoke, he opened the access gate for her.
After An Mi had gone in, he added, “Oh, and young lady, the property management just asked me to give this to you.”
Looking at the card the security uncle handed her, An Mi was puzzled: “What is this?”
The security uncle replied: “This is the access card for Block C residents; you need to swipe it to take the elevator up.”
An Mi thanked him and took the card.
When An Mi got to the 20th floor, the door was open.
She approached the door and called out, “Mr. Wan?”
Soon, a somewhat hoarse voice came from the living room: “Come in.”
An Mi was about to change shoes when she saw a pair of women’s slippers at the entrance.
They weren’t there when she came in the morning.
Just as she was wondering whether to put them on, the man’s voice rang out again, “There’s a pair of girl’s slippers at the door; put them on.”
“…”
After entering, she went straight to the point and said, “Wait a moment, I’ll just cook a few dishes.”
Having said that, she headed straight for the kitchen.
An hour later.
A meat dish, a vegetable dish, and a soup were ready.
Wan Muqi stared at the food on the table, taken aback for a moment.
“I didn’t expect you to have this skill,” he said.
Even though the An family isn’t a major clan, An Mi is still their precious daughter and should have been well protected without needing to do these things, but judging by the look of the dishes, she seems to be skilled at cooking, and quite good at it too.
An Mi: “Well, I just whipped something up. If it’s not to your taste, you can just have the soup, it’s carp and tofu soup.”
She had intended to leave after cooking, but Wan Muqi said he couldn’t finish it alone, and she didn’t want to waste food, so she ended up eating with him.
Midway through the meal, her cellphone rang.
An Mi startled when she saw the call was from Su He.
“Damn, it’s my sister,” she said.
An Mi subconsciously felt a sense of panic.
Seeing her in a fluster, Wan Muqi said, “Your sister isn’t a demon, what are you afraid of?”
An Mi didn’t know why she was so panicked, and even felt a bit guilty.
But she couldn’t just not answer the call.
Before picking up, she looked at the man across from her and said, “Mr. Wan, please make sure not to make any noise later.”
Wan Muqi: “…”
An Mi: “Hello, sister… I’m in the school dorm, yeah, I’ve eaten already… Oh, I’m free tomorrow, sure, I got it…”
“Cough cough…”
Suddenly, the man couldn’t hold back a cough.
Panicked, An Mi quickly stood up, reached out without thinking, and covered his mouth.
Su He had just returned to Moon Gift Villa and was parking the car in the garage when she slightly frowned and asked, “Why do I hear a man’s voice in your dorm?”
An Mi’s cheeks turned red as she said, “Oh, that’s my roommate watching a TV series.”
An Mi had never lied to Su He before, and she seldom told lies herself, so she felt uncomfortable all over, her cheeks burning, her ears hot, and a sense of guilt.
Su He didn’t ask further, mainly because she couldn’t imagine An Mi being at Wan Muqi’s place.
After hanging up the phone, An Mi let out a long sigh of relief.
Then she felt a tickle in her palm, and turning her head, saw her hand was covering the man’s mouth, which startled her and she quickly withdrew it.
She said apologetically, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it, I was just…”
In her haste, her hand had moved…
Wan Muqi didn’t blame her; he took a tissue and handed it to her, “Wipe your hand, I just had soup, there’s still some on my lips.”
“…”
The next day.
After class, An Mi received a call from her sister.
“An Mi, I’m in the parking lot of your school, come straight here.”
There was a medical seminar at 2:30 pm that afternoon, which An Mi had been wanting to attend, so Su He specially took time out to take her.
The seminar was in the next city over, about a two-hour drive.
They arrived at two o’clock.
Shortly after they took their seats in the venue, a familiar voice sounded.
“Sister-in-law, you’re here too.”
Wan Muqi was seated right behind them, a little to the upper right.
He had come in after them, so they hadn’t seen him just now.
An Mi couldn’t believe she would encounter him here.
Upon hearing the voice, Su He turned around, slightly startled when she saw him.
Then, very seriously, she asked, “Mr. Wan, when did you switch careers?”
Wan Muqi smiled, “You’re joking, sister-in-law. I’m here with a client today.”
