Lord of Illusions City
Chapter 222 Parting of Ways
The reason was simple: four or five days had passed, and many survivors, having realized that no rescue was coming, had begun to find ways to save themselves. As it turned out, when life is threatened, humans often unleash strength they never knew they possessed.
So, as Li Chenzhou and his team were traveling along another road into the city, having gone about twenty kilometers and rescued seventy or eighty people, they encountered another team…
This team was not very long, and most of the vehicles were large trucks, the kind that could carry a lot, whether people or supplies!
At the front of the team was a young man in his thirties, wearing glasses. Behind him were about a dozen people armed with various weapons.
They had seen Li Chenzhou and his team earlier, which was why they had stopped their convoy to wait for their arrival. It was clear that this young man was at least cautious.
Li Chenzhou's team certainly didn't have as many people as the other team, but they were still sticking to their previous habit of taking all the vehicles they could drive, leaving none behind. As a result, the length of their team and the number of vehicles were almost the same as the other team's.
When the two convoys were about thirty or forty meters apart, Li Chenzhou ordered his team to stop. He got out of the car and walked forward. In the apocalypse, people were even more suspicious of each other, so he didn't bring anyone else with him.
When the other side saw that Li Chenzhou was coming alone, they visibly relaxed, but they didn't come forward to meet him, simply waiting where they were.
"Brothers! You guys are… heading into the city?"
When Li Chenzhou reached them, the young man leading the other team looked at him strangely and asked.
"That's what we originally thought. We planned to go along this road to rescue people and then return, rescuing the people here!"
Li Chenzhou replied, pointing to both sides of the road.
"Rescuing people?"
The young man was stunned. "You mean… you're specifically going into the city to rescue people?"
"That's right!"
Li Chenzhou nodded and then pointed to his right. "Chenghua Avenue, the outbound highway, and the area between these two roads, we've searched almost everywhere, and we've rescued quite a few people!"
As he spoke, Li Chenzhou pointed behind the young man. "What about you? When you came out, did you rescue the people on both sides of the highway?"
"No! There should still be many!"
The young man shook his head. "We just came out along the way and didn't deliberately rescue people!"
"Hah! Okay! Looks like we still have to make a trip!"
Li Chenzhou nodded and then looked at the convoy behind the young man. "Let me give you some advice: take as many vehicles as you can out of the city. You'll need them outside!"
"Vehicles?"
The young man was taken aback. "We have enough vehicles now. Even if more survivors join us along the way, there will be enough vehicles for us!"
"Not for riding in or carrying things, but… when you get outside the city, you'll need a place to stay, right?"
Li Chenzhou shook his head. "When the time comes, these vehicles can be piled up to make walls and then welded together to keep the zombies out!"
"Oh!"
The young man suddenly understood, but then he shook his head. "We don't plan to build walls outside the city. We plan to go to Liaocheng! This city is already ruined, and there's no rescue coming. There's no point in staying here."
"It's not just this city that's ruined, it's all the cities, including the Liaocheng you're going to!"
Li Chenzhou shook his head. "So, if you want to survive, you can only build a base where humans can live, then go into the cities to collect resources while farming. That's the only way to survive!"
"How do you know?"
The young man looked at Li Chenzhou suspiciously.
"I learned it from apocalyptic novels!"
Li Chenzhou said, "Although I haven't been to other cities to confirm since the apocalypse began, our communications have all been cut off, and that's proof enough!"
"Maybe it's just a problem with the base stations?"
The young man frowned. He clearly didn't want to accept Li Chenzhou's guess, because if that were the case, life would be very difficult in the future.
"See my vehicle? I got it from the special forces' armory. They have satellite phones there, but they can't be used either!"
Li Chenzhou pointed to his armored vehicle and then added, "Also, there's an active-duty special forces soldier on my team, and he can't contact anyone either! So, don't have any illusions. Now, if we want to survive, we can only rely on ourselves!"
Hearing Li Chenzhou's words, the young man looked back at the people behind him and clearly saw a hint of despair in their eyes.
When they rushed out earlier, the young man had said that they were going to other cities, which must not have fallen yet. When they got there, they would be accepted, but now…
"Has your base been established? How many people are there?"
Seeing this, the young man looked at Li Chenzhou again. If other cities were out of the question, then… joining this man's base would be a good choice.
He said he had rescued so many people in that area. Added together, there must be thousands, right? Such a large base shouldn't have any problem accepting them, a few hundred people!
"I don't have a base!"
Li Chenzhou didn't hide anything and shook his head directly. "Our team only has less than ten people. We only rescue people and help them build a base. After that, we're not responsible, because we have to continue into the city to rescue people!"
"Just to rescue people? Why?"
The young man was stunned.
"Because this is a world overrun by zombies. I want… more humans to survive so that we have a chance to turn this world back!"
Li Chenzhou said, "If everyone only cares about themselves, maybe they can live a little longer, but in the end? Humanity will still be destroyed!"
"So… you're still going forward?"
The young man asked, stunned.
"Yes! Since you didn't specifically rescue people along the way and you didn't collect any vehicles, then we'll continue forward and try to rescue everyone!"
Li Chenzhou replied.
"What do we do? Join them and go with them?"
The young man turned to the survivors beside him and asked.
"They've rescued so many people, they should be very experienced. Following them shouldn't be a bad thing!"
One of them replied.
"But that's just what they said. Who knows if they've really rescued that many people?"
Some people clearly disagreed.
"It should be right!"
The young man shook his head. "Otherwise, they wouldn't be heading into the city now. And look at his convoy. There are men, women, old people, and children. They should all be survivors who were just rescued."
"But if we join them, wouldn't we have to go back? We finally managed to get almost out of the city!"
That person said with some reluctance.
"Then everyone can do as they please. I've decided to join them and follow them. If you don't want to, then take your team and leave!"
The young man said decisively, without hesitation…
