Lord of Illusions City
Chapter 34 Bastard! Go to Hell!
"Pu! Pu!"
At this moment, Li Chenzhou, on the fifth floor, spun his battle blade, chopping off the upper halves of two zombies' heads below. He panted heavily, looking at the corpses piled up in the stairwell, his eyes flashing with excitement.
The reason he stayed behind to block the zombies was twofold: only he could hold them back, and he wanted to rediscover the feeling of battle from his past life.
In just a few minutes, he stood firm, killing nearly forty zombies. Now, no more zombies were charging up the stairwell. In other words...he had annihilated all the zombies that had entered this unit!
Li Chenzhou was quite satisfied with this achievement. Although forty ordinary zombies were nothing in his past life, he hadn't yet strengthened his body.
One blade, one man, continuously slaughtering nearly forty zombies, finally allowed him to completely regain the feeling of his past life. However, he also clearly felt the fatigue in his current body.
No matter how sharp the blade, swinging it still consumed stamina, especially since he had to kick the corpses to block the zombies and slow their advance.
Looking at the still-gleaming battle blade, unstained by blood, Li Chenzhou contentedly sheathed it and turned to walk upstairs.
Now that the zombies in this stairwell were cleared, it was time for the other stairwells. He needed to eliminate all the zombies in the other two units before dealing with the Corpse King!
"Bang, bang, bang!"
Just as he reached the sixth floor, Li Chenzhou saw Duan Lei and the other three standing in front of a resident's door. Leopard was banging on the door, while Duan Lei shook his head repeatedly behind him.
"What are you doing?"
Li Chenzhou asked, annoyed.
He was risking his life killing zombies downstairs, and these four were just knocking on doors? Did they think he was collecting electricity bills?
"We wanted to open a resident's door just in case, but this guy insists on not breaking the door. He wants to knock it open, saying he's a police officer and can't forcibly break into someone's home."
Duan Lei replied, looking helpless. Then, suddenly realizing something, he quickly looked down the stairs and asked, "Boss, the zombies..."
"All taken care of!"
Li Chenzhou said.
Hearing this, everyone looked at Li Chenzhou with strange expressions. He had single-handedly eliminated all the zombies that could fill the stairwell?
"Then...what do we do next?"
Duan Lei, still skeptical, took a few steps down, peered into the stairwell, and confirmed that there were no zombies. The area was eerily quiet. He stuck out his tongue and looked up at Li Chenzhou, asking.
"Go up first, see how the Corpse King reacts, and then..."
Li Chenzhou replied without hesitation.
He had killed all the zombies in this unit, so the Corpse King would definitely know. He wanted to see how it would respond. Li Chenzhou hoped it would immediately summon the zombies from the other two units to attack.
The stairwell of this unit was already almost blocked with zombie corpses, making it more difficult for the zombies to charge up. It would be easier for Li Chenzhou to kill them. Given the intelligence of a Level 1 Corpse King, it was likely to adopt this strategy.
The Corpse King didn't care about its zombie minions. It could easily control them. As long as it didn't die, it could quickly gather a new army, even if all the zombies in this complex were wiped out.
With enough zombies, the Corpse King would never lack followers. Moreover, Corpse Kings were notoriously self-preserving. They always stayed in the center of the horde, surrounded by the strongest mutated zombies as guards.
Even mutated zombies would be sacrificed without hesitation if necessary, let alone ordinary zombies. They were just cannon fodder in the Corpse King's eyes.
However, Li Chenzhou didn't finish his sentence. Just as he spoke, a loud, chaotic sound of footsteps came from above, accompanied by zombie roars.
Everyone was stunned. Li Chenzhou's expression changed drastically. He drew his battle blade and rushed up, shouting, "Break into any apartment, quickly! Otherwise, we're all dead!"
Clearly, something unexpected had happened on the roof. Many zombies were rushing towards them, either from one unit or both units.
Neither scenario was good news for Li Chenzhou.
He did want the Corpse King to send the zombies from the other two units, but not from the rooftop. He wanted them to charge up from the unit entrance below.
The zombie corpses in the lower stairwell would act as obstacles, making it harder for the zombies to charge up. Most importantly, it would be much easier to kill them from above if they came from below.
But if the zombies came from the rooftop, they would have the high ground. Even Li Chenzhou wouldn't dare to fight zombies in such a disadvantageous position.
With more than ten zombies occupying the high ground, there was no way to defend. They would charge down like a tide, unstoppable. Even if they could kill the first few, the endless stream of zombies behind them would quickly engulf them.
That's why Li Chenzhou immediately rushed up, wanting to block the horde at the rooftop entrance. Otherwise, he would have to escape downwards, but the zombie corpses below would become obstacles. Even if they managed to escape the unit entrance, there would definitely be casualties.
"Pu!"
As Li Chenzhou reached the rooftop exit, a zombie had already broken through, shattering his plan to close the iron door. He had no choice but to swing his blade and kill the zombie, blocking the doorway with his body.
The entrance to this rooftop was on the far right side of the building. Standing at the doorway, Li Chenzhou could see the entrances to the other two rooftops.
On top of the small structure over the middle entrance, the young man who had just lost his father was kneeling, a look of insane joy on his face as he saw Li Chenzhou.
He raised his hand, gently waving a strip of cloth tied to a piece of steel rebar. At the same time, he mouthed a word to Li Chenzhou. It looked like:
"You bastard! Die!"
Seeing the rebar swinging back and forth, Li Chenzhou immediately understood.
The zombie outbreak was no accident. It was the young man who had released them.
He had used the rebar to jam the door handle and removed the wire holding the iron door shut. Then, he had run to the top of the exit. All he had to do was pull the cloth-tied rebar, and the zombies could easily break open the door and flood the rooftop...
