Chapter 738: Chapter 727: Meeting in Person
“New here?” A middle-aged man asked Song Yun with a smile in the warehouse.
Song Yun nodded a bit stiffly.
“It’s not easy to work away from home during the holidays, what’s your name?” the middle-aged man asked.
“My name is Song Dabao,” Song Yun said earnestly.
“Then I’ll call you Xiao Bao, and you can call me Qiang Li, or Brother Qiang,” the middle-aged man said.
“Nice to meet you, Brother Qiang!” Song Yun suppressed a smile and replied.
“What’s so funny, don’t get any ideas, I’m called Qiang Li, but not in that ‘magic oil’ sense, darn it, Xiao Bao, if you dare to laugh, do you believe I’ll make you move all the stuff later?” Qiang Li threatened.
“I’m not laughing anymore, Brother Qiang!” Song Yun said seriously.
“Good, good. Now that you’re here at the warehouse, I need to teach you something. Your job is to move stuff around. Our warehouse mainly serves as a distribution transfer station, so the workload isn’t huge, just about a truck’s volume per day. But let me tell you, you’ve got to perform well and stay proactive. You might not know, but at the top floor of this building is Wang Billion’s office. You know Wang Billion, right? He’s the richest man in ZJ and even here in Southeast. Who knows, if you work hard, he might notice you, and you could skyrocket to success!” Brother Qiang said encouragingly with a laugh.
“I understand, Brother Qiang!” Song Yun cooperated enthusiastically, full of hope, as Qiang Li nodded with satisfaction and continued, “Now, let me show you the goods in our warehouse.”
So, for the entire morning, Song Yun followed Qiang Li around the warehouse, and when it was time for lunch, they both headed to the staff canteen.
The staff canteen was huge, packed with people; almost everyone from the building came here to eat, easily more than a thousand people.
As Song Yun ate, he observed his surroundings. Wang Billion usually stayed in his office and sometimes even lived there. If Song Yun were to attempt an assassination, it would likely have to be done within this building. Thus, it was crucial for him to understand the layout of the building thoroughly.
As Song Yun was eating and thinking about his plans, the previously noisy canteen suddenly fell silent.
Following the gaze of the crowd, he saw a middle-aged man about a hundred meters away from him walking with a brisk pace.
“That’s Wang Billion,” Qiang Li whispered, “Every day at this time, he comes down for a walk and then goes to the second floor of the canteen to eat.”
Song Yun nodded, his eyes full of admiration as he watched Wang Billion. “This is the first time I’m seeing such a figure up close!”
“Hmph, Wang Billion, he’s the legend of the entire WZ,” Qiang Li whispered. “It’s said he has clout everywhere. Some even say he’s the boss himself. But of course, we common folks can’t be sure of such rumors. I did, however, witness Wang Billion clashing with some underworld figures once.”
“Oh?” Song Yun asked curiously. “What kind of clash?”
“That happened two years ago. We were sending out some shipments, and one of our convoys got stopped by a village gang demanding toll money. Wang Billion heard about it, and that same afternoon, you wouldn’t believe it, at least three container trucks entered that village, and from those containers, around two to three hundred men emerged—all fierce-looking characters. The so-called gang was nothing but about a dozen men, and they all got their legs broken. Then the villagers weren’t having it and rallied a thousand people to come out. You know what happened afterward? More trucks came from Wang Billion’s side, and about two thousand people faced off outside the village. Eventually, the local authorities had to step in to mediate. The villagers wanted compensation for medical expenses, but Wang Billion didn’t give a dime, so the mediation hit an impasse. Continuous conflicts occurred, but the village youths were no match for Wang Billion’s thousand men. Finally, someone else intervened, and the issue was hushed up. Since then, none of our trucks have faced anyone daring to charge tolls within ZJ.”
“That’s badass?” Song Yun’s face was filled with shock.
“Of course, it’s badass. The man is Wang Billion, after all, rumored to have several storerooms of gold in his house. Of course, those are just fables circulated among the lower rungs,” Qiang Li said with a grin. “So, I’m telling you, work hard. If you catch his eye, sky’s the limit, and it’s just a blink away.”
Song Yun nodded vigorously and said, “I will, but Brother Qiang, isn’t Wang Billion always in his office? How will I be noticed by him?”
“That’s easy, although Wang Billion doesn’t appear often, he still comes up to the canteen. If you do your job well, he might just spot you. But let me warn you, be careful about his men; did you see those guys around him? Each one of them is a tough nut; I’ve seen one of them shatter a concrete slab of over ten centimeters with a single punch. If that lands on your scrawny frame, you could be dead,” Qiang Li said.
“I get it, I’ll be careful!” Song Yun nodded vigorously, already formulating a plan in his mind.
Lunchtime soon ended, and then there was a half-hour break. Wang Billion had expressly set a rule for the warehouse. Unless summoned, no one was to go to the second floor of the building, where only white-collar financial elites were allowed. Going up could disturb the order and decrease other people’s respect.
“This is your break time; remember, don’t wander off too much, you’re just a temp,” Qiang Li guided Song Yun to a small room near the warehouse and said.
Song Yun nodded and replied, “Got it, I’m feeling sleepy anyway, I’ll just stay here. Go ahead with your work, Brother Qiang.”
“Good, obedience brings more benefits, oh, and Xiao Bao, we’re planning to play some cards over on the other side,” Qiang Li whispered, pointing to the opposite side of the warehouse where three people were already standing—two security guards and a warehouse dispatcher.
“I think I’ll sleep a bit and come over later,” Song Yun politely declined.
“Making a living out here, you gotta find quicker ways to earn money. We don’t play big, but you could still win a hundred or so in an hour and a half. Sure you don’t want to try your luck?” Qiang Li urged.
“No, thanks,” Song Yun firmly shook his head.
“Alright then, we’ll go on our own. If you change your mind, just come over,” Qiang Li said, then turned and walked away.
Song Yun opened the door to the break room, stepped inside, and then closed the door behind him.
“Qiangzi, is that the new guy?” one security guard muttered, nodding towards Song Yun.
“Yeah, a greenhorn who doesn’t know anything. Planned to have him play a few rounds, but he hasn’t got the guts, ha, let’s not bother with him and just have fun ourselves,” Qiang Li laughed as he drew out a deck of cards.
“Yeah, let’s just play here, we can keep an eye on the newbie and prevent any undue curiosity,” the security guard said with a laugh.
