Chapter 1223: [1223] Being ‘used’ by her
Seeing her nemesis, Xin Yanjun composed herself and turned her head away.
Glancing briefly at the teacher-student duo, Li Chengyuan turned back and walked forward. According to protocol, one should not interfere with someone else’s patient or meddle unnecessarily.
Ignoring him, Xin Yanjun continued to agonize over how to convince the patient to get hospitalized.
The young man noticed Li Chengyuan, who had just left, and asked Xin Yanjun and the others, “Who is he?”
Xin Yanjun found it hard to answer questions about that person and only let out a vague “Mm.”
Xie Wanying had a flash of inspiration and said to the patient, “He is Dr. Li, a cardiothoracic surgeon. If your condition worsens and you refuse hospitalization, it may trigger measles-related viral pneumonia. Potential complications, like empyema, pneumothorax, myocarditis, or heart failure, might arise, and it’s not out of the question that you could need surgery. That would mean a cardiothoracic surgeon like him making an incision on your chest with a scalpel.”
People say measles is serious—but just how serious? The young man had no idea. If doctors don’t explain in detail and only say “it could be fatal,” patients like him don’t take it seriously, thinking the doctors are just trying to scare them. There are countless illnesses said to be fatal, to the point where patients have become numb to such warnings. However, the young female doctor in front of him rattled off a series of academic terms that, even if incomprehensible, left his face turning pale as he listened. Unlike older generations from past decades, the young man had at least a basic education and could understand enough of Xie Wanying’s explanation to realize that her conclusion was not mere scare tactics.
Even if it wasn’t fatal, there was still the prospect of getting his chest cut open. The young man was successfully spooked by her words and asked, “Doctor, do you have a phone? I’ll call my coworker.”
Xin Yanjun blinked, overjoyed: Student Xie truly had keen observational skills and was sharp enough to act on them.
Without delay, Xie Wanying immediately lent the patient her phone.
Outside the room, Li Chengyuan, who had not gone far, paused when he heard Xie Wanying mention him. He stopped in his tracks to listen to what she was saying about him, and what he heard made him swiftly turn back.
People always said she was single-minded, not cunning. Looking at how she spoke to the patient, it was obvious that his arrival had prompted her to come up with this idea—to borrow his name to convince the patient.
For the first time, Li Chengyuan found himself “used.” He turned back to the internal medicine clinic to see what would come next.
Inside the clinic, the young man took Xie Wanying’s phone and got in touch with his coworker. Seeing Li Chengyuan appear again, he panicked and said into the phone, “You all hurry up and bring money to save me—I might die otherwise!”
Li Chengyuan stood at the door, both hands in the pockets of his white coat, his small eyes narrowing into a horizontal line like a horizon.
This patient would need to be admitted to the infectious diseases department. Xie Wanying quickly stepped out to notify the nurses.
As she brushed past him, seemingly unaware of his presence, Li Chengyuan thought to himself: She’s back to being that rumored single-minded person again.
After arranging the patient’s hospital admission, Xie Wanying returned to the internal medicine clinic.
In the clinic, the two rival teachers took advantage of the momentary absence of patients to chat.
Xie Wanying stood quietly to the side, waiting for her teacher to speak.
“You see how familiar she is with surgical topics. Why not let her shadow me tonight and learn some surgery—how about it?” Li Chengyuan spoke directly, making it clear that he was here with the intent of “poaching” her as his student.
Why should I let you take her? Xin Yanjun snorted derisively through her nose.
“Every time she opens her mouth, even when dealing with internal medicine patients, she effortlessly rattles off surgical points. Are you saying she doesn’t have surgery on her mind? She’s distracted and not fully present with you. Internal medicine is too simple for her. Let her start learning something new with me earlier. You know what would be best for her,” Li Chengyuan said with a sly smirk.
