Chapter 407 Sea of Fire
"How is that possible?" the security guard said, surprised. "You must be mistaken!"
Standing in front of the stairwell, everyone couldn't help but gasp when they saw the safety door with an extra lock.
It was completely different from when they first arrived.
"This doesn't comply with fire regulations," Qiao Yu's brother said to the security guard, pointing to the locked safety door.
The security guard looked embarrassed and didn't respond.
"Would you like to check another office?" the security guard interjected, seeing the atmosphere was a bit heavy.
Hua Luo turned around. "Another office?"
"Yes, there's another one. It was Li Zumei's old office. After she moved to the ninth floor, she used it as a storage room."
Hua Luo told the security guard to lead the way and immediately went up the stairs on the other side. But even when they reached the entrance of Li Zumei's old office on the thirteenth floor, they didn't see Jiang Cheng and the others.
There were no signs that the office door had been opened recently.
They were also missing.
Hua Luo determined that they must be trapped in the stairwell on the left, and the ghost who made the call was Li Zumei.
This was a trap.
This place was very remote, at the end of a corner, and there was no one around.
"Wait a moment, I'll go find the person in charge to get the key. No one has been here for a long time," the security guard said, about to leave, but Hua Luo said it wasn't necessary, and then kicked the door open.
It was a bit dark inside, but you could still barely see that it was an office.
Everyone was worried that the security guard would bring more people and cause unnecessary trouble, so they kept him there, with Qiao Yu's brother standing at the corner, keeping an eye on the surroundings.
Hua Luo went in first, and Chu Jiu took out a small flashlight from his pocket and followed.
The environment here was much worse than the office on the ninth floor. There were sundries piled everywhere, and the desk didn't seem to have been cleaned for a long time. There were also several empty bottles on the floor.
What was more noticeable was a huge bookcase with glass doors in the corner. Through the glass windows, they could see many paper bags placed side by side, much like the ones they had found before.
Realizing this, Hua Luo immediately walked towards the bookcase.
"How could this happen?" Chu Jiu's voice interrupted Hua Luo's steps. He looked in the direction of the voice and saw Chu Jiu shining the flashlight in the direction they had come from.
The next second, Hua Luo's pupils couldn't help but tremble.
The door they had come through... had disappeared.
A huge picture frame appeared in its place.
...
"Doctor," Fatty mumbled, covering his mouth. "There's too much smoke."
"Watch your step and keep low," Jiao Tailang was also choking on the thick smoke. The smoke and dust swirled around, accompanied by bursts of heat, making it almost impossible to open their eyes.
About ten minutes ago, a fire suddenly broke out in the building. The fire was unusually fierce. Led by Li Zumei, they came to a safety door.
But the safety door was blocked by something from behind, and they couldn't push it open no matter what they did. They could only open a large crack.
Jiang Cheng and Jiao Tailang both tried, but couldn't squeeze through.
Finally, Li Zumei squeezed through.
After Li Zumei squeezed through, she immediately disappeared into the thick smoke.
The heat behind them was scorching, and the fire was about to burn over them. Fatty even smelled the burnt smell of his own hair. Just when he thought he had been abandoned, Li Zumei's voice suddenly sounded from behind the door.
She told everyone to hold on, and after fiddling around with a crowbar she had found, she finally made the gap bigger before everyone was swallowed by the flames.
Fatty retreated to the back to let Jiang Cheng and Jiao Tailang go first, worried that his size would get stuck in the middle and implicate the doctor.
Fortunately, Fatty was pulled out by the combined efforts of the three.
The group immediately ran downstairs, but the further down they went, the thicker the smoke and the heat seemed to burn them alive.
Fatty even touched his eyebrows, worried that they would catch fire.
In the thick smoke, Fatty couldn't open his eyes at all. He was running downwards entirely on instinct. He tried his best to keep low. There were footsteps all around, and he couldn't tell who was who.
He could barely see Li Zumei in front of him.
Li Zumei was, after all, an ordinary person, and a woman, so her physical strength and endurance were not as good as theirs. Fatty saw her steps becoming more and more faltering, and finally her body trembled and she fell down the stairs.
"How... how are you?" Jiao Tailang squatted in front of Li Zumei. The thick smoke brought tears to her eyes, but the next second, the tears were dried by the heat.
Her face was burning with pain.
Fatty and Jiang Cheng were gone. She heard faint running sounds from downstairs, and it seemed that they had abandoned this woman.
The woman moaned meaninglessly. She hugged her leg. Jiao Tailang touched it with her hand and found that the bone was not broken, but her foot should be twisted.
"Don't... don't leave me," Li Zumei pleaded bitterly. She stretched out her red and swollen hand and grabbed Jiao Tailang's clothes tightly.
The fire was getting bigger and bigger, and there were crackling sounds everywhere. Not far behind the woman in the corridor was a huge wooden shelf.
The wooden shelf was burning fiercely, and looked like it could fall down at any time.
Jiao Tailang gritted her teeth. "Get up," she said loudly, enduring the heat. "I'll help you walk!"
She had the woman put her arm around her shoulder, and then the two hobbled downwards. At this time, her eyes were useless. Jiao Tailang could only test the ground with her feet little by little.
Li Zumei was also very cooperative, and the two became more and more skilled in their cooperation.
But just as Jiao Tailang forced herself to open her eyes and wanted to see the surrounding situation, an unintentional detail caught her eye.
Li Zumei had one arm around her shoulder, and to keep her balance, her other hand was on the handrail of the stairs.
And walked down little by little like this.
Jiao Tailang's pupils jumped.
The coating on the handrail showed signs of melting. Jiao Tailang didn't know how high the temperature was, but it was definitely not a temperature that a normal person could touch with their bare hands.
This woman... wasn't human.
She was a ghost.
After figuring this out, Jiao Tailang remained calm and used the opportunity to let the woman change her position, taking advantage of the woman moving her arm away, turned around and ran.
Jiang Cheng faced the exact same situation as Jiao Tailang, but the difference was that he had already seen that there was something wrong with this fire.
It burned too fast, and too fiercely, without any warning, as if it had started instantly, and it was burning on multiple floors at the same time.
He had remained calm before because Jiang Cheng hadn't found out where this ghost was.
But just after Li Zumei twisted her leg and lay on the ground pitifully begging for someone to save her, Jiang Cheng was sure that she was the ghost.
After all, in such a fire, a person's tears could be baked dry in a few seconds, so how could Li Zumei cry like a kite with a broken string?
But Jiang Cheng still calmly helped her up, encouraged her, and walked to the handrail of the stairs. Catching her off guard, he kicked her down and turned to run upstairs.
