Chapter 750 Footprints

Chapter 37 Flour

There wasn't much strategy involved; all everyone wanted was to survive.

People kept leaving along the way, and when they finally reached a corner, Jiang Cheng stopped.

Only Fatty and Huai Yi remained by his side.

"This is the place." Jiang Cheng looked around, seemingly satisfied with the location.

To the right was a row of rooms, the closest of which had the words "Deputy Director's Office" pasted on the door with white paper.

Further in was a corridor with a restroom at the end, as well as double doors that looked like an emergency exit.

The left side was relatively spacious with a better view, dotted with scattered seating and large potted plants.

The plants were also arranged on iron racks resembling bookshelves, creating a staggered effect, showing that the person in charge of the arrangement wanted to create a relaxing space.

But now, these iron racks and other decorations provided Jiang Cheng and the others with natural barriers.

"Doctor." Fatty stood in front of a door, which was half-open. "Come and take a look, there's something here..."

Jiang Cheng quickly walked over. The room looked like a storage room.

Cleaning supplies were placed against the wall: mops, brooms, and some nails hammered into the wall.

Hanging on the nails were an old coat and some black plastic bags of unknown contents.

A small table was discarded in the corner, with a bucket of oil on it, and several large white bags under the table.

Inside were rice and flour.

This must be the welfare provided to employees by the school.

Jiang Cheng's gaze slowly focused on the bag of flour. After a moment, he directed Fatty and Huai Yi to drag the flour out.

"Spread the flour around here, try to spread it evenly." Jiang Cheng quickly rummaged through the storage room and found two enamel cups, which he handed to Fatty and Huai Yi.

Huai Yi looked at the white flour and immediately understood Jiang Cheng's intention, saying in surprise, "Jiang-ge, if we spread the flour around, the ghost will leave footprints when it steps on it, and we can determine its location."

"Stop talking nonsense, and hurry up!" Jiang Cheng urged.

Spreading the flour could be left to Fatty and Huai Yi; he had more important things to do.

He walked alone to a more forward position, hiding behind the second iron rack filled with potted plants, observing the direction they came from through the gaps.

If there were no surprises, the ghost would come from here.

Because this was the corner of the intersection, the only way to the next location.

This was also one of the reasons why Jiang Cheng chose to hide here.

Fatty and Huai Yi were busy spreading flour around, and Jiang Cheng helped them keep watch. Once he sensed the ghost approaching, he would immediately notify them to hide.

Time passed by, and just as Jiang Cheng was becoming a little impatient.

An accident occurred.

A burst of footsteps came from a distance, not walking, but running.

The person running seemed to be in a hurry, but still tried to keep the footsteps as quiet as possible.

It should be a person coming, but it wasn't clear who it was.

Hearing the sound, Fatty and Huai Yi also came over, both of them smudged with flour. Fatty even had a white patch on his face, which looked a bit comical.

"Who is it?" Fatty stared in the direction of the sound, his throat bobbing nervously.

"I don't know." Jiang Cheng didn't relax his vigilance and instead asked, "How's it going with you guys?"

"We've only done half of it, not enough time," Huai Yi quickly replied.

Jiang Cheng nodded. "You guys go hide in the back first, don't hide in the rooms, try to find low tables, or screens, bookshelves, something that can provide cover." He reminded them, "Be careful not to step on the flour."

"Got it."

"Then, Doctor, be careful," Fatty said with concern. He didn't plan to stay and watch the fun, after all, he was different from the doctor.

Just as Huai Yi and Fatty left, Jiang Cheng's eyes twitched. He saw two figures darting out from the corner not far away, one in front of the other.

The one in front was clearly Gao Yan.

Gao Yan's running posture was strange, with his toes raised, but the effect was obvious. His footsteps were much lighter than the person behind him.

Gao Yan must have noticed him, but he only glanced at him, without any interaction, or even stopping his steps, and ran further inside in a puff of smoke.

In comparison, the person behind him was much more disheveled. Her foot seemed to be injured, and she limped as she ran; it was Shen Mengyun.

As she got closer, Jiang Cheng saw Shen Mengyun's face clearly. She was biting her lip, her eyes were red, and her face was filled with despair.

One hand was holding her right leg, which looked like it was injured.

Her footsteps were also much heavier than Gao Yan's.

What was even worse was that Jiang Cheng could already smell a faint burning odor, following them behind Shen Mengyun.

Just as Shen Mengyun was about to stagger past the iron rack where he was hiding, Jiang Cheng flashed out, first signaling Shen Mengyun not to be afraid.

Seeing Jiang Cheng, Shen Mengyun's eyes lit up.

"Don't talk, come with me."

Jiang Cheng initially supported Shen Mengyun's arm, but Shen Mengyun was limping and couldn't walk fast at all. The burning odor behind them was becoming more intense.

"Mr. Jiang." Shen Mengyun said in a very small, embarrassed voice, "I sprained my ankle while running just now."

Although she said that, she gripped Jiang Cheng's arm even tighter.

It was clear that this woman didn't want to be abandoned. After all, in her current state, surrounded by unfamiliar surroundings, her chances of survival were very small.

But she was also very hesitant, because they were not related, and bringing her, who was unable to move freely, would only increase the risk of Jiang Cheng being found.

This wasn't a game, there was no chance to play again.

Jiang Cheng reached out, grabbed Shen Mengyun's hand, and forcefully pried it open. In that instant, Shen Mengyun's eyes dimmed.

In the end, was she still going to be abandoned…

But who could she blame?

She was injured, and unable to move freely. In such a dangerous situation, how could she expect a stranger to risk their life to save her?

If it were her, she would probably think about it too.

Just as she forced a bitter smile and prepared to bid farewell to the world in the most miserable way, suddenly, she involuntarily fell backward, and then her whole body was lifted up horizontally.

She hadn't recovered yet and was about to struggle subconsciously.

"Don't move." Jiang Cheng's slightly warning, low noise sounded in her ear. "I'll take you away."

Shen Mengyun was stunned. From her perspective, she could just see Jiang Cheng's chin and half of his profile.

Jiang Cheng moved quickly while carrying her, and finally found a place where two people could hide.

It was a very large old bookshelf, close to the wall.

They hid in the gap between the bookshelf and the wall.

Fatty was lying under a large table not far away, while Huai Yi was hiding behind the corner between the corridor and this place.

The surrounding ground was sprinkled with white flour, but Jiang Cheng noticed that some messy footprints had already been left on it.

Without asking, it must have been Gao Yan who stepped on it when he ran over.

Jiang Cheng cursed inwardly. That old guy only knew how to mess things up.
