Chapter 994 We Can Find Our Own Way

"Mr. Wei might want to catch some wind," General Chen said with a smile. "It's good for clearing the head. The road ahead is long, so it's best to think before you act. Mr. Wei should consider his decisions carefully."

After a series of events, Lin Wan'er felt that the people below had been sufficiently warned. It was time to move on to the next step. She turned her head, looking at a middle-aged man who was sitting rather far from her.

The man was also the head of a family, but he hadn't said much since entering. He wore a look of deep suffering.

Judging from his seating position, his family's status was rather marginal. No one was really willing to listen to him even if he spoke.

"Mr. Qi," Lin Wan'er said, a hint of a smile appearing on her face, one that looked at least somewhat genuine.

Qi Wenbin was taken aback, then his eyes filled with apprehension. His shoulders even started to tremble. He had always been conscientious in his work and couldn't imagine what he had done to attract the attention of such a powerful figure as Commissioner Lin. "Commissioner Lin, just give the order. I'm all ears."

Seeing Qi Wenbin's nervousness, Lin Wan'er smiled, signaling him not to get agitated. She then took a document from General Chen, opened it, and said to Qi Wenbin, "Mr. Qi, the Huang family leader is dead. Huang Daojing's son is still young and inexperienced. Integrating the Huang family's power in the capital will probably be the limit of his abilities." She paused, then continued, "As far as I know, a portion of the Huang family's influence has been infiltrating your Tong'an City for the past few years. Is that correct?"

Qi Wenbin was confused, but he answered truthfully, "Yes, Commissioner, that is the case." He didn't dare say more, because he had argued with the Huang family, and his brother's leg had been broken by them.

But the Huang family was powerful. Even with Huang Daojing's death, his family couldn't shake them.

Lin Wan'er tossed the file on the table, saying casually, "Here's what I think. When you get back, send someone to negotiate with the Huang family. They will withdraw from Tong'an City." Lin Wan'er smiled. "Don't worry, I'll send someone to talk to them."

Qi Wenbin blinked, then his eyes widened. "Really?"

"Our investigation has revealed that the Huang family's businesses in Tong'an City involve violations. Mr. Qi, your next step is to devote your energy to rectifying this." General Chen sat up straight, his tone unquestionable.

"Of course, of course! Please rest assured, Commissioner Lin, General Chen. I will definitely live up to your expectations!" Qi Wenbin clenched his fists, his excitement overflowing.

"Mr. Qi misunderstands," General Chen said, waving his hand and smiling. "This isn't Commissioner Lin's or my idea. It's all arranged by those above. They've been watching your actions over the years."

Having risen to the position of family head, Qi Wenbin wasn't a fool. He immediately stood up, answering with a solemnity that was almost like a vow, "My Qi family is willing to dedicate ourselves to the country, even unto death!"

"Loyal and righteous people have always faced hardships. Mr. Qi has finally overcome his trials," Lin Wan'er said, nodding with a smile.

Following the same pattern, the Huang family's power was completely dismantled. Apart from a few key positions, the rest was divided among several other families that had long been suppressed.

Some were happy, while others were worried. The families that had shown displeasure to Huang Jingdao at the meeting didn't get a single benefit. However, they didn't dare to show any resentment. After all, they were already burning incense for being spared.

After the meeting, the family heads who had received benefits offered endless thanks. Those who hadn't received any didn't dare show the slightest dissatisfaction. Lin Wan'er seemed to casually mention a few things, but for those with guilty consciences, these words struck a chord.

There were some things that those above weren't unaware of, but they had given them a chance in light of their past achievements. If they continued stubbornly down the wrong path, Huang Jingdao's fate would be theirs!

"See these seniors out for me," Lin Wan'er said to Chen Ran, who had been standing nearby ever since he had mistakenly entered the room.

"We wouldn't dare, we wouldn't dare. We wouldn't dare trouble Young Hero Chen. We'll get out of here ourselves… ah, no, we'll leave ourselves. We know the way!" Everyone scrambled to leave, practically running. They were grabbing their phones as they ran, afraid that if they were a step too slow, the shared bikes downstairs would be taken by someone else.

These family heads, accustomed to a life of comfort and luxury, were determined to walk back, and none of them were willing to take a car.

After everyone had left, General Chen picked up the notebook written by the Wei family head. It was filled with the names of more than a dozen people, all of whom were Wei family spies planted in the army.

Lin Wan'er picked up her water glass and took a small sip. "How does it compare to the list we have?"

General Chen nodded as he compared the lists. "Apart from those on the fringes, the core ones match up. With Huang Daojing's example, the old man wouldn't dare to lie to us."

"What do you plan to do with these people?" General Chen put down the notebook, looking at Lin Wan'er. After all, she was the commissioner.

Lin Wan'er raised her hand and then drew it across her neck.

"Kill them all?" General Chen was a little surprised. According to his plan, most of those on the periphery could be released after an investigation. The core ones knew too much information, so for the sake of safety, it was justifiable to get rid of them.

The ruthlessness of this woman's methods made even someone like him feel a little overwhelmed. General Chen paused for a moment, speaking in a tone of suggestion, "Commissioner Lin, those on the periphery have very low positions and basically don't have access to any decent secrets. How about this? I was thinking of isolating and investigating them before clearing them out of the army. You've already warned the Wei family today. Let's not push them too hard."

"No way!" Lin Wan'er refused flatly. "General Chen, if we can condone the act of sending spies into the army to gather military intelligence, then more and more people will challenge our bottom line in the future. We absolutely cannot set this precedent!"

General Chen hadn't expected Lin Wan'er's attitude to be so firm. It made him feel a little awkward. He held the notebook, unsure whether to pick it up or put it down. The situation was a little embarrassing.

Fortunately, Lin Wan'er's attitude gradually softened. It was only at this moment that General Chen felt that the person in front of him was more like a woman than a ruthless machine.

"General Chen," Lin Wan'er said, looking at him. "This is a war, and a war that we absolutely cannot lose. With the responsibility on my shoulders, I can't explain in detail the kind of terrifying world we would face if the Night Watchers' plan succeeds."

"But I can tell you that civilization would cease to exist at that moment. A new order would be established by a group of madmen, and ordinary people would simply become their hunting targets, tools to be played with, or even just food..."

"I've seen that kind of world," Lin Wan'er said hoarsely. "That's why I know that we must never allow that kind of world to invade the human realm, no matter the cost!"
