Gentle Sleep Instructor
Chapter 997 Hon, We Don't Want This Useless One
Lin Wan'er took a deep breath. "When did this happen?"
"J-Just now..." the person in charge stammered. A series of blows was a little too much for this technically-minded researcher to handle.
"I'm asking you, when was this team sent out?" Lin Wan'er suppressed her temper. Surely they weren't only just receiving the news? She could hear clearly from where she was.
"About two hours ago, almost two hours!" the person in charge repeated.
"Where were they last seen?" As Lin Wan'er spoke, she turned her head. Wan Yuanning, understanding her intentions, operated the projection equipment. Soon, an electronic map appeared on the large screen.
Zooming in, and zooming in again, five red dots, after a long and complex movement, finally stopped inside a building, and then disappeared almost simultaneously.
General Chen couldn't sit still any longer. He was just about to reach for the phone in his pocket when his movements suddenly stopped. He then looked at Lin Wan'er with a somber expression. She was holding the only landline phone in the conference room.
"Commissioner Lin, please give me the phone. I need to contact Old Man Luo for support," General Chen said anxiously.
Lin Wan'er, having hung up the phone, shook her head and said in a normal but helpless tone, "It's useless. His people can't handle this level of supernatural event."
General Chen looked a little embarrassed.
"Do you need me to go?" Chen Ran, who had been standing to the side and hadn't spoken for a long time, asked.
"I need you to stay and protect the command center," Lin Wan'er instructed. "Besides, your abilities aren't suitable for this kind of mission."
Chen Ran nodded. He didn't argue. He knew that the Director would arrange everything.
After a moment of thought, Lin Wan'er dialed another person's number. It rang twice before being answered. "Where are you?" Lin Wan'er asked without any pleasantries.
"Driving." The man's originally casual voice became a little more serious. "Just finished cleaning up the car. I dumped Huang Daojing's body outside the Huang family's villa, as you instructed. I knocked on the door to tell them the body was delivered, but they refused to open the door."
"I have a new mission for you," Lin Wan'er said in a low voice. "A new supernatural event has erupted in Rong City, code-named Ghost Movie, Class A, threat level four stars."
Hearing this, the man couldn't help but sit up straight. "When did this happen?"
"The first case was discovered yesterday afternoon. I'll have someone organize the details and send them to you. You must read them before taking action," Lin Wan'er instructed. "The situation here is more complicated than I thought. I suspect there's a Night Watcher conspiracy involved."
"Understood," the man nodded.
"Also, bring Number 13 with you," Lin Wan'er said. "His abilities will be helpful to you."
The man turned his head to look at the boy in the passenger seat, who was wearing a seatbelt and playing a mobile game without a care in the world. The boy was wearing headphones and completely engrossed, not noticing the man was on the phone.
The man withdrew his gaze and shook his head with a smile, saying in a very small voice, "Isn't that unnecessary? I can handle it myself. Bringing him along would just be a burden."
"And I'd have to drive back to pick him up. It's so annoying," the man muttered. "This mission must be very urgent, right?"
Lin Wan'er hesitated for a moment. "It's up to you. Remember what I said. You're just there to gather information. Don't take any risks. Wait for my next instructions," she emphasized, which was rare for her.
If the time wasn't so tight, Lin Wan'er wouldn't have chosen to send Number 2, but she had so few cards to play at the moment. Number 4 and Number 5 were dead, and Number 3, Number 6, Number 7, and Number 8 were all injured.
Number 6 was even working with injuries, having been requisitioned to protect the safety of the command center.
Originally, she still had Number 1, but now, that card was already...
A black luxury car traveled through the night, slowly stopping at an intersection. "Stop playing. Go home yourself," Number 2 said, turning to Number 13 in the passenger seat. "I'm going to a bar to dance with the young ladies."
Number 13 reluctantly took off his headphones and shouted, "I'm telling you, Number 2, you're too mean! You're going to dance with the young ladies and you're not taking me?"
"What would I take you for?" Number 2 waved his hand, looking disgusted. "To tell them, 'Don't let my good looks fool you. I'm actually a scumbag. Because I started playing early, my child is already this big.'"
"Pui, pui, pui! Number 2, you shameless bastard! It's giving you face for me to go there. If it wasn't for you ruining my chances last time, that young lady would have taken me..."
"Ah, yes, yes, yes, and then the next morning you wake up in a two-meter-wide bed, look down, and realize you're missing a kidney." Number 2 narrowed his eyes, mercilessly mocking. "Just when you're glad they left you one, you suddenly find a note on the pillow, written in delicate handwriting: 'Dear, we don't want this useless one.'"
"You motherfucker..." Number 13's face flushed red, and then, as if he had made up his mind, he grabbed the seatbelt and wouldn't let go. "Anyway, I don't care, I'm going!"
Seeing this, Number 2 looked down at the cowboy hat on his lap. After a moment, he sighed with a smile. "Okay, I'm not messing with you. Number 13, go home. I have something to do."
Number 13 also put away his childish expression. Looking in the rearview mirror, he straightened up and leaned against the back of the seat. When he was serious, he even looked a little handsome. "Number 2, that ghost isn't simple. Listen to me, there's definitely a trap here." Number 13 said softly, "To be honest, about an hour ago, before you came, I felt very panicked for no reason. I secretly calculated a hexagram for you, and the divination was very bad."
Number 2 smiled. "No wonder you were clamoring for me to drive and pick you up."
"Take me with you. I can help you somehow. If you and I join forces, even if it's a dead end, we'll have a chance to fight our way out." Number 13 held his knees, his voice getting softer and softer. "Number 4 and Number 5 are gone. There aren't many of us left at home. If something happens to you, I won't even have anyone to talk to."
Number 2 grinned, deliberately making an exaggerated expression. "Isn't there still Number 8? With her around, you won't be bored?"
Hearing Number 8 mentioned, Number 13's face changed in an instant, more terrifying than mentioning any evil ghost. "Why are you bringing up that crazy woman for no reason?"
"Is she even human anymore?" The more Number 13 thought about it, the angrier he became, cursing loudly. "She's a pure psychopath! She didn't accumulate any virtue and had a nightmare last night, and then ran over to beat me early in the morning, insisting that my conscience was greatly corrupted and that I was cursing her with voodoo dolls! I'm a diviner, not a witch! She seems to have something wrong with her brain!"
