Honey Pomelo

Chapter 54 The Way of an Official

"What is it?"

Hearing him say that, I quickly stopped and followed the direction of his finger to look ahead.

Under the hazy moonlight, even with our cultivated senses, our vision was still greatly affected.

Although I had already squinted my eyes, I still couldn't clearly see what was amiss in the direction he was pointing.

"Do you notice something moving on that tree? The crooked-necked tree!"

The young Taoist whispered.

"On the tree?"

Hearing him say that, I finally realized that there seemed to be something on the crooked-necked tree ahead.

"Damn it, could it be that thing chasing us?" I gritted my teeth and swallowed hard.

"Doesn't seem like it! Be careful!"

From our current distance, the tree was about two hundred meters away.

Although we could vaguely see something moving on the tree, we couldn't make out what it was.

The young Taoist spoke while gritting his teeth and slowly moved forward.

After all, this village only had two entrances and exits.

We couldn't go back the way we came, so we could only risk venturing through here.

"Holy crap! It's a snake!"

After walking another hundred meters forward, I finally got a clear look at the thing on the tree.

On the crooked-necked tree, a huge snake, at least ten meters long, was coiled.

Moreover, this snake was as thick as an adult's thigh.

This was definitely not a good omen!

"What should we do?"

The young Taoist glanced back in the direction we came from and then asked in a low voice.

"What else can we do? This place is too damned eerie. I think we should just charge out!"

I hesitated for a moment, then looked back at the direction we came from. The strength of the red-clothed specters on that tree was too immense. Even dealing with just one of them was difficult for both of us. If more of them rushed over, we would surely die.

Compared to those things, this giant snake in front of us seemed less frightening.

"Be careful, this thing doesn't look simple either!"

The young Taoist gritted his teeth and nodded at me.

"I'll go first this time!"

Regardless, my right hand was very useful for handling various unexpected situations, so I stepped forward.

"Then be careful!"

The young Taoist didn't say much more, observing the surroundings as he spoke softly.

"Mm!"

I grunted and headed towards the village entrance again.

The location of this village was very strange. When we arrived, we had crossed a small mound, and when we left, we had to cross another small mound.

Moreover, the sides of the road were densely packed with houses.

To get out, we could only pass under that crooked-necked tree.

As the two of us got closer to the crooked-necked tree, the giant snake also seemed to have noticed us.

Looking at its cold vertical pupils, I suddenly felt a chill run down my spine.

"Something's wrong! Look, what is that?"

Just as we were about ten meters away from the giant snake, I suddenly noticed that several hundred green lights had appeared on the outer mound.

"Damn it, what kind of godforsaken place is this!"

After seeing those things clearly, the young Taoist couldn't help but shiver.

Those green lights were all eyes, and they were all the eyes of weasels!

"Where did so many weasels come from in this place?"

Even though we were both daring, we felt something was amiss at this point.

Weasels were usually very timid and would immediately flee when encountering humans or livestock. How could they be waiting menacingly outside now?

Furthermore, these weasels were larger than average. The largest ones were already as tall as half a person when standing up!

Their fur had all turned pearly white, indicating that these creatures had some cultivation.

"How about we just stay the night in this village?"

This place was too strange. Even I and the young Taoist didn't dare to rush out rashly.

Although weasels were eerie, if there were only one or two, with our abilities, it shouldn't be a problem. However, with hundreds of them together, even a fierce tiger couldn't withstand a pack of wolves.

"But, the things in this village are probably even more eerie..."

I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead, glanced at the giant snake on the crooked-necked tree, and said in a low voice.

"How about you go out and take a look?"

The young Taoist gave a wry smile.

"Look at what!"

I glared at him unceremoniously. These weasels were clearly hostile. They seemed to be waiting for something.

In any case, it didn't look like they were here to invite us for a meal. I didn't have any talismans on me, and I really didn't dare to confront them head-on.

"Bang—"

Just then, a strange footsteps sound suddenly came from the darkness.

Hearing that heavy sound, the young Taoist couldn't help but twitch his eyebrows.

"Damn it, that thing is chasing us!"

I couldn't help but let out a wry smile. This was truly a case of misfortune striking when one is already down.

If we had known this would happen, we might as well have stayed put in that cave and waited for the rain to stop before making any plans.

"What now?"

I wanted to cry. Damn it, we had weasels blocking our way in front and specters trying to kill us from behind.

We were like sheep that had escaped the wolf's den only to enter the tiger's mouth!

"Let's find a place to hide!"

Looking at the houses on both sides, the young Taoist gritted his teeth and said.

"There's no other way, whatever happens, happens!"

At this point, we really had no other options. I could only nod in agreement with his plan.

The young Taoist didn't hesitate. He took a few steps back, got a running start, and leaped directly over the wall of a residential building, landing inside the courtyard.

Although these residents had already stated that outsiders were not welcome, we had no other choice now. In our desperation, we had to act out of necessity.

I took a few steps back, imitated the young Taoist, and jumped into the residential building in front of me.

"Fellow villager, we are truly sorry. My brother and I are desperate and have no choice but to stay here for the night. Don't worry, we'll stay in the courtyard and won't enter the house!"

Although it was an act of necessity, the young Taoist still called out towards the house.

But strangely, there was no response from inside the house. There wasn't even a rustling sound from the people inside. I suddenly had a bad feeling. Could this house also be strange...?
