Chapter 124: Abyssal Sovereign’s Seal
The God of Death moved through his emporium like a curator of nightmares, skeletal fingers trailing over artifacts that hummed with barely contained violence.
Each item he touched seemed to recognize its master, glowing briefly before settling back into dormant malevolence.
"Now then," Hades said, his voice carrying the weight of eons, "let’s discuss what you’ll need to survive long enough to reach that demon castle."
Jack followed behind him, eyes cataloging the impossibly diverse collection.
Weapons that leaked shadow, armor that seemed to breathe, trinkets that whispered promises in languages that predated civilization itself.
"The demons you’ll face aren’t like Cho," Hades continued, pausing beside a display case filled with rings and amulets.
"They’ll hunt in packs, coordinate their attacks, and adapt to your tactics. You need equipment that’ll give you a little edge."
The god’s eye sockets flared as he selected a silver bracelet from the case. The metal was inscribed with runes that pulsed faintly.
[Sanguine Accelerator]
[Rank: Unique]
[A bracelet forged from the condensed essence of battlefields. Builds combat momentum through conflict.]
[Effect: Gain 1 stack per enemy killed, maximum 10 stacks. Stacks reset if no damage is dealt to enemies for 30 seconds. At 10 stacks, converts 10% of all magic damage to lifesteal and increases movement speed by 10%.]
"This," Hades said, offering the bracelet to Jack, "rewards aggression. The longer you fight, the stronger you become. Perfect for you, because you need to hunt a lot of monsters if you want to get anywhere."
Jack accepted the bracelet, feeling its weight settle against his palm like a promise of violence.
The metal was warm to the touch, almost alive, and he could sense the hungry attention of whatever force had been bound within.
"And this," Hades continued, producing a ring of black obsidian set with a stone that looked like crystallized blood, "complements the bracelet’s philosophy."
[Crimson Recovery]
[Rank: Unique]
[A ring carved from the heartstone of an ancient vampire lord. Transforms death into sustenance.]
[Effect: Upon killing an enemy, restore 1% HP and 2% Mana per second for 4 seconds. This item can stack.]
"Kill enough demons quickly enough," Death explained, "and you’ll never need to rest. Your enemies become your source of strength."
Jack slipped the ring onto his finger, immediately feeling a subtle shift in his body’s energy flow.
The two items seemed to resonate with each other, creating a feedback loop.
"These are perfect," Jack said, flexing his fingers to test the ring’s fit. "What’s the cost?"
"Twenty-five thousand Death Tokens for the pair," Hades replied. "A bargain, considering they’ll likely save your life dozens of times over."
Jack nodded, already calculating the remaining balance.
But before he could confirm the purchase, the God of Death moved deeper into the emporium, his movements taking on a more theatrical quality.
"Of course," the god said casually, "if you were looking for something truly exceptional..."
He stopped before a pedestal that Jack hadn’t noticed before, shrouded in shadows that seemed to exist independently of any light source.
Upon it rested what looked like a broken sigil, its surface cracked and scarred but still radiating power that made the air itself tremble.
[Abyssal Sovereign’s Seal]
[Rank: Mythical]
[Status: Damaged]
[Fragment of a sigil once worn by the Lord of the Abyss himself. Though broken, its power remains terrifying.]
[Effects: +50 to all attributes. +30% damage to all attacks. +30% movement speed. +40% regeneration abilities.]
[Special Skill: Vampiric Overdrive - All damage dealt grants 35% lifesteal]
[Cost: 6,000,000 Death Tokens]
Jack’s jaw dropped as he read the description.
The numbers were staggering, beyond anything he could have imagined. With this sigil, he’d be transformed into something approaching a god of war himself.
"Six million," he said slowly. "You’re showing me this just to torment me, aren’t you?"
Hades’ laugh was like grinding millstones.
"Consider it motivation. A glimpse of what becomes possible when you’ve truly embraced your role as Soul Warden."
Jack stared at the broken sigil, feeling its pull like gravity.
The rational part of his mind knew it was impossibly expensive, but another part whispered seductive possibilities.
With that kind of power, the demon castle would become a hunting ground rather than a challenge.
"How long would it take to earn six million Death Tokens?" he asked, despite knowing the answer would be depressing.
"At your current rate of demon slaying?" Hades tilted his skull thoughtfully. "Perhaps a year. Maybe two, depending on what kinds of creatures you encounter."
Jack would have to kill 12,000 dread rank creatures to obtain 6,000,000 Death Tokens, and that would not be an easy feat.
Jack sighed, forcing himself to look away from the sigil. "Then I’ll stick with the bracelet and ring. Twenty-five thousand, you said?"
"Indeed." Hades moved back to the display case with obvious satisfaction. "A wise choice. Power that exceeds your ability to control it becomes a liability rather than an asset."
Jack transferred the Death Tokens through the system interface, watching his balance drop to a much more modest 3,250.
The transaction felt weighty, like signing a contract written in blood.
[Purchase Complete: Sanguine Accelerator + Crimson Recovery]
[Death Tokens Remaining: 3,250]
The moment the transaction completed, both items seemed to settle into Jack’s body like they’d always belonged there.
The bracelet’s runes pulsed once with satisfied hunger, while the ring’s stone gleamed with anticipation.
"There’s one more thing," Death said, his tone becoming more serious.
"These items will mark you as more than just another mortal adventurer. Demons can sense power, and they’ll recognize what you carry."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning subtlety is no longer an option. The moment you activate either item’s abilities, every demon within five miles will know exactly what you are and where you are."
The god’s eye sockets flared brighter. "They’ll come for you with everything they have."
Jack flexed his fingers again, feeling the items’ power humming through his system like electricity through copper wire.
The knowledge that he’d become a beacon for demonic attention should have been terrifying.
Instead, he found himself smiling.
"Let them come," he said quietly. "I’m tired of hiding."
Hades regarded him for a long moment, then nodded with something approaching approval.
"Spoken like a true Soul Warden. Your predecessor would be proud."
The god moved toward the emporium’s exit, his robes rustling like autumn leaves.
"The path to the demon castle lies northeast of here. Follow the river of souls until it branches, then take the tributary that flows uphill. You’ll know you’re getting close when the screaming starts."
"Screaming?"
"The castle sits atop a convergence of ley lines that amplify suffering. Every soul that’s ever died within its walls continues to experience their final moments, over and over, for eternity."
Death paused at the doorway. "It’s quite atmospheric, actually."
Jack shook his head, already resigned to the horrors that awaited him. "Anything else I should know?"
"Yes." The god’s voice carried a note of genuine warning.
"Don’t let Corvin evolve until you’ve gathered more suitable cores. The hellfire demon core you carry is powerful, but it’s also chaotic. Your raven’s dark affinity might not be compatible with such volatile energy."
"What would happen if they’re incompatible?"
"Best case scenario? Corvin becomes uncontrollably aggressive and tries to incinerate everything within a mile radius. Worst case..." Hades shrugged. "Well, let’s just say there’s a reason demons don’t make good pets."
The warning sent a chill down Jack’s spine. He’d been looking forward to evolving Corvin, but the thought of accidentally transforming his companion into a threat was sobering.
"How do I know which cores are compatible?"
"Experience," Hades said unhelpfully. "Or if you find the right materials to stabilize it."
The god stepped through the doorway, but his voice continued to echo from the gathering shadows.
"Remember, young Warden. Power without wisdom is just elaborate suicide. Don’t let your new toys make you careless."
The door swung shut with a sound like a coffin closing, leaving Jack alone in the empty emporium.
The silence was absolute, broken only by the distant whisper of wind through mountain stone.
Jack looked down at the bracelet and ring, feeling their weight both physical and spiritually.
He activated the bracelet’s display, watching as the stack counter appeared in his peripheral vision.
[Sanguine Accelerator: 0/10 stacks]
Jack stepped out of the emporium and back onto the mountain ledge.
Corvin perched back on Jack’s shoulder. The great raven’s violet eyes took in the new equipment with obvious interest.
"Ready for another hunt?" Jack asked, reaching up to stroke the bird’s midnight feathers.
When Jack stepped out, the God of Death was no longer there.
He turned around and the Emporium was gone.
The emporium only had power if Death was there.
