Chapter 281: Chapter 281: Feeling a Bit Better
But the next second, Evelyn Clayton’s happiness was completely shattered.
Looking at the traffic cop not far away with a serious face, Evelyn’s foot gradually eased off the accelerator, and the smile on her face slowly disappeared.
After stopping the car, the officer walked up solemnly and handed her a ticket.
"Miss, please show your ID and driver’s license. You were speeding just now, which is a violation of traffic laws, and I am giving you a warning."
Evelyn: "..."
Happiness left too quickly, like a tornado.
Helplessly, she cooperated with the cop to verify her identity, then slinked back into the car.
Before leaving, the officer saluted Evelyn: "Miss, a friendly reminder: if you’re feeling troubled, try finding a healthier way to vent. Speeding is dangerous for both you and others."
Upon hearing this, Evelyn froze.
Unexpectedly, she recalled the scene of James Grant disregarding her safety and taking her for a joyride.
Back then, her fear and trembling were no joke.
She must have lost her mind, risking her life for a man!
Evelyn rubbed her forehead, apologized sincerely, and repeatedly promised never to do it again.
Only then did the officer let her go.
Once back at the apartment, Evelyn took a deep breath and opened the door, only to find Yara Reagan sitting on the sofa.
The coffee table was filled with various sweets, cakes, and milk tea, all formidable weapons against slimness.
Seeing Evelyn return, Yara eagerly approached.
"You’re back? Try these yummy treats I bought for you; sweets can lift your spirits."
Yara blinked and picked up a delicately sweet-looking cake, holding it out to Evelyn.
"Why should I eat? I’m already in a good mood!"
Evelyn asked with a puzzled face.
But Yara had a knowing expression.
"Come on, don’t pretend to be calm in front of me! I know you just attended James Grant’s engagement party. Even though you always said you had no feelings for him, do you think I don’t know you? Trust me, have some tasty food, do fun things, and just leave that man behind! Isn’t it better to be fabulous on your own?"
After listening, Evelyn was at a loss whether to laugh or cry.
Yara was afraid she might be upset after attending the engagement and had come to console her!
"You’re overthinking. I haven’t liked him in a long time. Why would I be down because of him?"
Evelyn waved her hand, sat on the sofa, and stuffed a cake into her mouth.
Though the sweetness lingered in her mouth, it went down tasting inexplicably bitter.
Despite this, Evelyn still managed to maintain a nonchalant smile.
"This brand is too sweet; don’t buy it again, or I’ll get fat to death!"
Yara was taken aback for a moment, seemingly skeptical of Evelyn’s impressive recovery ability.
But the next second, she looked as if she understood, and with a somber expression, she patted Evelyn’s shoulder.
"Evelyn, your acting skills need work. If you entered showbiz, you’d definitely die within three episodes of a palace drama! If you want to cry, just cry, don’t hold back!"
Evelyn, who had been brooding, burst into laughter at Yara’s exaggerated joke.
The gloom from her earlier speeding incident instantly vanished.
That night, with Yara’s company, Evelyn had a good sleep for the first time.
In her dreams, there were no blinding smiles from James and Lynn Yates, nor her father’s tragic and unrested demise.
The next morning, Evelyn woke up refreshed and began organizing the studio’s orders.
Before she could start, Yara came rushing over with more excitement.
"Evelyn! Look, The Grant Group seems to be planning something big!"
Taking the tablet from Yara’s hand, Evelyn took a closer look.
#The Grant Group announces full termination of cooperation with Monroe Holdings, effective permanently#
This maneuver left Evelyn somewhat perplexed.
The collaboration between The Monroe Family and The Grant Family had lasted for decades, with Summer Monroe and Harrison Grant colluding behind the scenes.
What could The Grant Group be thinking by ending cooperation with The Monroe Family? And permanently ending it?
Yara looked at the dense comments section and clicked her tongue.
"I heard James Grant is now in charge of The Grant Group. With this announcement, The Grant Group will have to pay hefty breach penalties and it will also affect the stock market!"
One would’ve thought Evelyn would be moved by the news.
But to Yara’s surprise, Evelyn simply nodded faintly, with minimal expression.
"Everyone’s grown up; you must face the consequences for your actions. If you dare to end a cooperation, you have to pay the price for it."
