Yuan Tong
Chapter 811 Already Forgotten
Hao Ren and the others emerged from the temple to see several tribal warriors waiting outside, holding horses. The tribal settlement was a dozen kilometers away from the temple, so they must have ridden here at full speed.
It seemed Gezer had already told these tribal warriors that the goddess was searching for strangers, which was why they had rushed to report.
Hesperides stepped forward, "Take us to see that guy."
The group returned to the Fire Tribe's settlement and found the "stranger" being closely guarded by several soldiers and great warriors in a yurt on the edge of the settlement. The man was draped in a linen robe of unknown origin and looked restless. He paced back and forth under the watch of several soldiers. It was Baptiste, who had previously disappeared.
However, his demeanor seemed very different from their last meeting. This time he seemed... quite uncalm.
Baptiste was startled when Hao Ren and the others entered the yurt. He quickly scanned the group, a look of confusion and caution on his face, and subconsciously adopted a defensive posture. A Holy Blade warrior of the Fire Tribe walked behind Vivian, describing the circumstances of the stranger's capture: "Our night patrol found this man in the nearby wilderness. He was stark naked, wandering aimlessly in the wild, and seemed mentally unclear. Two sentries were injured by his magic, but he was quickly subdued by the great warriors who rushed to the scene after hearing the news."
"Did he hit his head when he fell?" Hesperides frowned as she looked at Baptiste. She hadn't expected to catch the wizard in this situation. The cunning fellow had actually fallen into the hands of the native warriors in a daze. "Baptiste, you don't look so good."
Baptiste immediately stared at Hesperides warily, his voice hoarse, "Who are you? How do you know my name?"
"Huh?" Lily's eyes widened, "Playing dumb? Didn't you want to use us as batteries before? Forgotten already?"
Baptiste replied in a frank voice while remaining wary, "I don't know who you are, but I have quite a few enemies. If you want to kill me, just do it, but don't expect to get anything out of me."
Hao Ren couldn't help but stare at Vivian, dumbfounded. "Amnesia? How did we run into such a cliché?"
Vivian carefully sized up Baptiste, unable to tell whether he was pretending or had truly lost his memory. She pointed to the data terminal on Hao Ren's shoulder, "Doesn't this thing have a lie detection function? Test him."
"This unit just happens to have installed such an App, please don't confuse this unit with ordinary lie detectors!" the data terminal squealed, then floated to Baptiste's head, "Dummy, what's your name?"
"Baptiste."
"Do you recognize the people in front of you?"
"No impression at all."
"Okay, all true – this guy really has amnesia."
The crowd fell silent. They hadn't anticipated such an accident. Baptiste was caught, but he had amnesia!
"A powerful wizard, lost his memory just from falling from above?" Nangong Sanba looked at the others with a questioning look. "I feel like this is a fantasy."
At this moment, Gezer suddenly interjected, "He has no external injuries."
No external injuries meant Baptiste didn't lose his memory from a fall.
Vivian curiously circled Baptiste twice, then suddenly asked, "Do you remember what you came here to do?"
"Why would I tell you?" Baptiste met Vivian's gaze with a hint of sarcasm, "I may have lost my memory, but I'm not stupid."
"If you weren't stupid, you'd cooperate," Cassandra stepped forward, pointing to the large group of people in the yurt, "There are so many of us..."
Baptiste straightened his back, his face unchanged, "So that's the extent of your threat? I thought you were more capable."
Cassandra was silent for a moment, then pointed to the burly male soldiers, "Local custom, they are gay."
Baptiste: "..."
"And there are five hundred more men and horses outside – five hundred combined."
Baptiste's face turned green: "..."
Hao Ren quickly tugged at Hesperides beside him, "What's wrong with your subordinate? Is she always like this?"
"Anyway, she was about to be beaten to death when I found her," Hesperides said as she unceremoniously slapped Hao Ren's hand away, "Besides, are we close? Stay away from me!"
Baptiste's face changed several times before he finally took a breath, "I'm here to find someone."
Cassandra nodded with satisfaction, "Hmm, looks like you haven't completely lost your memory. Looking for a witch named Beatrice?"
Baptiste was stunned, a look of genuine confusion on his face, "Beatrice... who's that? Sounds familiar..."
Nangong Sanba was immediately surprised, "Forgot the most important part?"
Vivian suddenly shook her head at this moment, "No, perhaps there's another reason."
She had been carefully observing Baptiste's condition and sensing the flow of energy within the body of this creature, which was hard to tell whether human or undead. At this moment, she seemed to have finally discovered something: "Didn't you notice that his arm has grown back?"
"Arm..." Hao Ren was stunned for a moment, then suddenly remembered that Baptiste's arm had been chopped off at the root by Lily, yet the wizard in front of him now had all his limbs intact.
"And when he jumped into the abyss gate, I watched him get torn to pieces by the spatial storm. The warriors also said he was found running naked in the wilderness, so I suspect..."
As Vivian spoke, she placed her hand on Baptiste's shoulder. The next moment, a bright light suddenly filled everyone's vision.
Powerful magic surged into Baptiste's body. The wizard was obviously in an extremely weakened state. He didn't even have time to react before he was enveloped in layers of electric light. The next moment, lightning erupted, and the wizard instantly turned into a charred corpse.
However, the charred corpse did not fall. Although its vitality was cut off, it stood swaying. Then the ashes on its surface slowly disappeared as if being absorbed. Baptiste re-formed his body from the ashes and charcoal, just like the first time he met everyone – and this time, he was "resurrected" from the "dead" state.
The resurrected wizard opened his eyes. Weakness almost made him fall to the ground. He looked at the strangers in front of him in astonishment, then instinctively prepared to fight, but his voice was full of confusion, "Who are you?"
Vivian waved her hand to stop Hao Ren from speaking. She turned to look at the wizard, "You suddenly barged into this 'Purgatory', I want to ask what you're doing here?"
Baptiste shook his head, answering casually as if in a dream, "This is Purgatory? I remember I came here to find someone..."
"Do you know who Beatrice is?"
"Beatrice?" Baptiste frowned, "Doesn't ring a bell."
"There's a magic core in his body. This magic core allows him to be resurrected continuously. This should be the modification he made to cross the gates of Purgatory," Vivian finally answered everyone's doubts, "But there's a problem with this resurrection process: he loses his memory."
Lily's eyes widened, "So..."
"So he doesn't know his own affairs at all, never has. He only knows that he's going to Purgatory to find someone, that's all," Vivian sighed, "He doesn't even remember the name of the person he's looking for. He's probably been like this for hundreds of years... Give up, you can't get anything out of him."
Baptiste listened blankly as others discussed his affairs, as if listening to an irrelevant Arabian Nights tale. He didn't even remember being caught here, so he sat down on the spot calmly. He was a little curious why the ragged robe he was wearing was full of scorch marks, but he quickly pushed these details aside, and his whole mind began to immerse himself in reviewing those empty memories.
Lily cautiously poked the wizard with her paw, "Do you still remember your name?"
"My name is Baptiste, a wizard apprentice."
"What are you doing here?"
"I'm here to find someone."
"Who are you looking for?"
"I don't know..."
(Hahahaha - drank too much, dizzy, going to lie down first...)
