Chapter 163 The Day of Return
The arrival of the two Airmens was a minor piece of news for the residents of Hao Ren’s house. Except for Izaax, who had seen the world and wasn't interested, everyone else sat around the coffee table, eager to hear what the two werewolf elders had to say. Lily sat next to Hao Ren, her head almost resting on the latter's chin, not out of affection, but because her neck hurt, and she was having Hao Ren massage it. She was just a husky asking for help in the way only a husky could.
Brufferley Airmen picked up the teacup and took a sip of the thirty-yuan-per-pound jasmine tea, smacking his lips. "The countess's life is still so simple..."
Vivian didn't like hearing that. It was one thing for others to say she was poor – she was poor anyway – but now she was supported by Hao Ren, and the tea and water belonged to someone else. As a well-mannered vampire, she had to say something: "It's good enough to have something to drink. Stop complaining. Your family isn't doing much better either – and the landlord likes this, so what's it to you?"
Brufferley laughed and put down his teacup. "I didn't expect we'd meet in this situation. It's been centuries since we heard any news of the countess. Our family thought you had been 'purified' by the demon hunters. Now it seems you truly are the countess who summoned the Red Moon. It's not easy to kill you – I wonder how the countess has been all these years?"
"That sounds so fake," Vivian said with a smile that held no warmth. "Anyway, I'm doing fine now. I'm sure you're disappointed I didn't die. What about you? Such a high-profile werewolf family hasn't been wiped out by the demon hunters yet. Should I say you're just lucky? Or that the wicked never die?"
In just a few words, sparks seemed to fly between the two sides. And this was the result of both sides agreeing to "peaceful negotiation" from the start. It was hard to imagine what it would be like if they met normally. It seemed that the friction between Vivian and the Airmens was a historical problem; who knew why they had such a big conflict?
Hao Ren prepared to bravely take on the responsibility of a firefighter if they really started fighting (mainly by holding Vivian down and then having Izaax throw the Lanxiang brother... the Airmen brothers out), but he underestimated the two werewolf elders' self-restraint. Brushette just smiled slightly at Vivian's provocative words. "A few days ago, I heard a junior member of the clan mention that the 'Countess Who Summoned the Red Moon' had appeared in Asia. The entire Airmen family was in turmoil. After all, you are a well-known figure among the otherworldlings. Old grudges are old grudges. In this turbulent era, it's always a happy thing to know that another old 'friend' has survived."
"Yeah, now is not the time to dwell on those old things," Vivian said, her brow unfurrowing. Although her tone was still not warm, she looked quite calm. "Actually, I don't remember much of what happened back then... You say I stirred up trouble, but I have no recollection of it. I just remember living freely... Am I really that famous?"
"It's still the same as back then," Brufferley said with a wry smile and a shrug. "Your free life is enough to turn many people's lives upside down, okay? You almost beat me to death for a chicken back then, have you forgotten?" As Brufferley spoke, he pointed to the long scar above his eyebrow. "You could have just said you were hungry. Was it necessary to loot the entire werewolf settlement for a meal? And after knocking everyone down, you actually only took a chicken... Countess's free-spiritedness is truly a 'free-spiritedness' that terrifies everyone. Tsk, tsk."
Vivian's face immediately showed an awkward expression. Seeing the strange look in Hao Ren's eyes, she could only explain in a low voice, "I don't remember at all... It's possible that I didn't notice anyone around when I was grabbing things back then."
Hao Ren rolled his eyes: Just how hungry was this sister back then?
The two Airmen brothers and Vivian chatted about old times like ordinary old acquaintances, probably trying to create a peaceful atmosphere, but soon both sides realized this wasn't very reliable: Nothing good had happened between Vivian and the Airmen family in the past millennia. Recalling those old things would only make both sides more angry and eventually lead to a fight, so Vivian wisely waved her hand to interrupt them before they brought up something even more annoying. "Alright, enough reminiscing. Let's talk about business – you've come all this way, risking being targeted by demon hunters. You shouldn't be here just to stir up trouble."
"Indeed, we hope to discuss the current situation with the oldest elder of the blood clan." Brufferley's face turned serious, but before he continued, he looked around at the others with a searching gaze. Seeing this, Vivian waved her hand. "Just speak. The people here are more reliable than you. The landlord is the master of this sanctuary, and he should know everything."
"I didn't expect the countess to become so easy to get along with," Brufferley nodded, then looked into Vivian's eyes. "I wonder if the countess has received any news of the 'Day of Return' from your other clansmen?"
Hao Ren's casual attitude was immediately grabbed by this word, and he realized that these two werewolves had really brought some big secret!
"Day of Return?" Vivian frowned. "What's that?"
"You don't know?" Brushette was surprised. "All the otherworldlings are taking action. As far as we know, even those most closed-off and conservative vampire groups in Northern Europe are becoming active. I thought you would have at least received the news – after all, you are an elder of the blood clan."
"Don't keep calling me an elder, I'm still young!" Vivian knocked on the coffee table, then crossed her arms. "I haven't contacted other blood clans for a long time. These years, I've been struggling... busy traveling the world, and I haven't been paying attention to current events. What exactly happened? I heard those two little guys, Kasa and Yuen, mention the sirens coming ashore. Is it related to that?"
"Indeed," Brufferley noticed that Vivian really didn't know anything about the "Day of Return," and his tone became subtle. "The sirens brought a message from the deep sea, mentioning the exciting event that the mythological era is about to return, but the details of the Day of Return are only known to the elders of each family. Juniors like Kasa and Yuen naturally don't know... But I didn't expect you to be kept in the dark either. Could it be that within the blood clan..."
"Thinking too much isn't a good thing," Vivian said slowly with a hint of threat. "Werewolves should worry about werewolf matters. There's nothing wrong with me and my clansmen. I just don't like being with those boring juniors. Now tell me, what exactly is the Day of Return?"
"'The ancient source of power is awakening, the ancient glorious kingdoms established by the transcendent races are about to reopen their doors, our glory and power are about to return, and the continuous decline of those brutal hounds is an undeniable omen.' This is just a snippet of information about the Day of Return, translated directly from the sirens' ancient and obscure ancient language. The meaning is clear when interpreted," Brufferley said a passage of seemingly mystical prophecy in a solemn tone, then turned his curious gaze to Nangong Wuyue. "Actually, I wanted to ask earlier, isn't there a siren here? I thought she was your messenger..."
"What's a messenger?" Hao Ren couldn't help asking.
Brushette received an affirmative look from Brufferley before explaining, "It refers to those sirens who came ashore more than a hundred years ago. Apart from those who ended their journey for 'various reasons,' the remaining sirens have found the remaining groups of otherworldling races in the world. Basically, each group has one. They call themselves messengers, and the news about the Day of Return was released by them. I thought a sanctuary like yours would at least be considered a small group, and a rather special one at that. This siren girl is your messenger..."
"Uh, we actually just organized recently," Hao Ren scratched his head. "As for Nangong Wuyue... according to you, her mom is the messenger, she's not."
"Oh, the descendant of a siren," Brushette nodded in realization, then looked at Vivian. "What does the countess think of the Day of Return?"
"Bullshit." Vivian was concise.
