Chapter 109 A Chaotic Melee

Chapter 201 A Sudden Turn of Events

The situation took a sharp turn for the worse. The sudden appearance of the demon hunter team left even Vivian momentarily stunned.

Kasa Eben stared in bewildered disbelief at the expressionless "humans" looking down from above. His muscles began to slowly bulge once more. The strange hand crossbows held by the demon hunters carried an unsettling aura, a unique "scent" left behind from countless hunts of the unnatural. As a seasoned werewolf, Kasa Eben could sense the intense bloodlust emanating from them.

Without a doubt, this was a group of experienced hunters.

Kasa Eben had received information about demon hunter activity in the city, and he had even speculated that there might be one or two patrolling. But he never imagined there would be so many, or that they would be so much stronger than anticipated. To set up an ambush like this right under the nose of werewolves… this was definitely not the work of demon hunter rookies.

The intelligence was faulty; there must have been a problem with the family's "sentinels." But it was useless to think about any of that until he managed to escape this crisis.

Euen Eben also began to transform immediately, but his transformation, like Kasa Eben's, was noticeably slower. And even after transforming, their aura was nowhere near as strong as before.

Perhaps their fierce battle with Vivian was one reason for their weakened state, but the bigger reason was the faint yet persistent strange scent in the air. This scent was causing the two werewolves to feel their strength constantly draining away, making it impossible to focus. Euen Eben looked up at the middle-aged man on the rooftop, squeezing out a low growl from his throat: "You… you're still so underhanded!"

"Just hunting," the middle-aged man said expressionlessly. "Hunters set traps; it's not a matter of morality. But before I start, I have a few questions. Why are so many monsters gathered in one place? This shouldn't be your territory."

The middle-aged man's voice was calm, without anger or hostility. He was simply curious about the situation and asked the question. This was the first time Hao Ren had seen a true demon hunter. Unlike the half-baked Nangong he had met in England, this demon hunter was more in line with Vivian's description, and clearly… more dangerous.

As the middle-aged man spoke, the demon hunters on the surrounding rooftops raised their hand crossbows, aiming at the "unnatural" beings on the field, and even including the unfortunate Hao Ren in their sights. Clearly, they weren't expecting the "prey" to explain why they were gathered here. While werewolves and vampires might exchange a few words after a fight, demon hunters and the unnatural were absolute, irreconcilable enemies. There was almost no room for compromise between the two. Once they met, it was a fight to the death.

"I can't muster any strength," Kasa Eben said quickly, before the others could attack. "How are you holding up?"

"I'm fine. Their drugs have limited effect on me," Vivian said, looking wary, glancing at Lily. "That big dog seems fine too. Maybe it's because of her special bloodline…"

Normally, Kasa Eben would have wanted to ask what this "special bloodline" meant, but there was no time for that now. As Vivian spoke, the demon hunter leader raised his hand crossbow slightly: "Move."

Seven or eight small, silver, glimmering bolts shot out like lightning. Compared to the earth-shattering battle between Vivian and Kasa Eben earlier, these bolts looked insignificant, but even Vivian dared not underestimate their destructive power. She pushed Lily, then transformed into a swirling cloud of bats to evade the attack. Kasa and Euen also leaped in different directions to dodge. Only Hao Ren was a bit slow to react. Although his mind could barely keep up, his body was a step behind. With a crisp "ding," a ripple-like pattern spread across his chest. Fortunately, the rigid shield had the ability to activate automatically in emergencies, otherwise he would have been "taken out" by this attack.

The silver-white bolts that missed their targets didn't fall to the ground. Instead, they vanished in mid-air after Vivian and the others dodged, then miraculously reappeared on each demon hunter's hand crossbow, ready to fire again!

This was the standard equipment of demon hunters, a hunting weapon called "Endless Justice." Both the crossbow and its ammunition were imbued with incredible power, capable of endlessly hunting their targets. The demon hunters used their mental strength to lock onto the crossbow bolt's enemy. Until the bolt successfully hit its target, it could reset itself to the optimal state for firing countless times, until it hit!

Of course, there were ways to deal with these weapons. Either destroy the hand crossbow while you have the chance, or kill the crossbow's user directly. Otherwise, you can only wait for the demon hunters to switch to other equipment.

Vivian and the two true-blooded werewolves were well-informed and knew what these demon hunter weapons were all about, so they immediately launched a counterattack. Vivian transformed into a storm of bats, carrying two bolts of lightning towards the demon hunter leader on the rooftop, planning a decapitation strike. The two werewolves, meanwhile, dodged the continuous barrage of crossbow bolts while looking for an opportunity to approach the attackers on the rooftop. Their black mist seemed suppressed by the strange scent in the air, so now all they could rely on was their speed.

Lily was running around blindly, clutching her head. For the moment… she was safe. Huskies were pretty fast runners.

The scene instantly descended into chaos. The demon hunter crossbows, with their unlimited ammunition, began to sweep across Hao Ren and the others like mini-machine guns. The faint traces of silver flashes could be seen constantly in the air, the afterimages left by the demon arrows as they teleported back to the hand crossbows. The two werewolves had no chance to get close to the enemy. Their physical condition was so poor that it was a miracle they could stay unscathed with their agility. Vivian's first lightning strike was also ineffective: there was a lightning rod next to the demon hunter leader…

The one who had shot an arrow at Hao Ren earlier was a cold woman with a scar on her face. She was also the only demon hunter to have lost a bolt. The rigid shield on Hao Ren, from a higher civilization, far exceeded the level of mysticism on this planet, so the demon hunter's weapon effect was nullified. Seeing Hao Ren dodging the attacks of the others with a layer of translucent film around him, the scarred woman gave a strange "eh" sound. Then she stepped forward from the top of the two-story factory building, her whole body disappearing instantly. The next second, she appeared less than a meter in front of Hao Ren and threw a punch!

Hao Ren cursed inwardly. He never expected that the authentic demon hunters not only had unlimited ammunition but also came with a full-screen teleportation cheat. He was caught off guard and took the hit right on his face. The rigid shield dissipated most of the damage, but the shockwave from the punch still sent him flying several meters. In the end, Hao Ren managed to barely stand his ground thanks to the muscle coordination and agility brought by his body enhancement, avoiding the embarrassing fate of being knocked down by a woman's punch.

The cold, scarred woman was even more surprised to see Hao Ren wearing a shield on his face. She waited for Hao Ren to stand firm before calmly speaking: "What race are you? I've never seen this kind of magic. Are you a wizard?"

"I'm human!" Hao Ren looked at the chaotic battle around him. He was already furious at these "demon hunters" who had suddenly appeared and started killing without rhyme or reason, and now he had been ambushed like this. He was immediately enraged and roared as he charged forward: "Authentic human! More authentic than all of you!"

The scarred woman didn't expect Hao Ren to charge over with speed comparable to a werewolf's full-speed sprint. Before she could even activate her teleportation, she could only raise her hand crossbow to block. With a cracking sound, Hao Ren, this half-baked superman, became the first person to successfully dismantle a demon hunter's weapon.

"Humans don't have this kind of speed and strength, nor do they have shields," the scarred woman teleported ten meters away before Hao Ren could throw a second punch, quickly took down a strange, oversized crossbow more than a meter long from her back. She even had the leisure to speak, "You must be a new kind of monster. I'm going to take you in for research."

Hao Ren swung his data terminal and threw it with all his strength: "Go research this!"
