Chapter 66 Is That... Over?
When Vivian plummeted from the sky, the blood-colored moon above vanished as well. With the suppression of the blood moon's light gone, the surrounding undead armor immediately stirred again. The clattering of metal scraping against metal filled the air. Lily hurriedly raised her giant brick, ready to fight once more. However, the first to act was the demon that had nearly scared everyone half to death: the five-meter-tall horror raised its hand and with a casual grab, the sea of fire and thick clouds in the sky vanished cleanly. At the same time, Vivian felt the demonic power around her rapidly diminishing, until even the energy reaction of the demon stone slowly disappeared.
The undead armor in the underground palace had been activated by the stimulation of the demon stone. Now that the source of that stimulation was suddenly cut off, they naturally lost their instructions. In addition, the Laita runes on the armor had been overburned by the demonic power earlier and were mostly damaged. Now that even the demonic power had vanished, the guards completely lost their motivation. All the armor emitted a rapid tremor, then fell straight to the ground, motionless.
The undead guards that had given Hao Ren and the others so much trouble were thus dealt with.
The giant demon nodded, seemingly satisfied with its actions. Then it crouched down again, trying to meet Hao Ren's eyes (though due to the vast difference in height, this was nearly impossible). It looked at the metal plate in its hand, which seemed to have pinyin symbols carved on it: "Uh… Ni… Ni shi wo de fang… Dong ma?"
After saying this, the demon looked at Hao Ren expectantly. Hao Ren's mind was still a mess at this point. The bizarreness of the situation had nearly deprived him of his ability to think. He didn't react until he felt a burning sensation on his head: the demon was spraying sparks of fire from its mouth as it spoke, and it had set Hao Ren's hair on fire!
"Ouch, ouch, ouch…" Hao Ren frantically patted his head, and luckily managed to put out the sparks before his hair actually caught fire. Then he jumped back several steps before the demon could speak again. "Don't talk for now, your accent is making me anxious."
Then he shakily pulled out the data terminal from his pocket: "MDT, what the hell is going on?!"
"You lack sufficient respect for this unit, especially considering the insulting nickname you've given it," the data terminal seemed to enjoy answering in Hao Ren's mind, not even bothering with subtitles. "However, this unit is still willing to inform you: this is the situation."
Hao Ren looked up at the terrifying creature engulfed in flames and lava, and swallowed. "Do you have a demonic language translation package?"
The data terminal grunted. "Now you finally remember the correct way to use this unit? What about when you were using this unit to smash things?"
Hao Ren hefted the data terminal up and down in his hand. "If you keep talking nonsense, I'll tie you to a stick and you can be a hammer for the rest of your life."
"…"
Hao Ren successfully obtained demonic language translation support, and he could finally communicate smoothly with the giant creature in front of him (though the other party seemed to have diligently studied Chinese for some time). "So… are you the new tenant I'm looking for?"
The demon immediately looked surprised, and a stream of lava erupted from its bicep. "How can you speak demonic… Oh right, you're an inspector, nothing you do is strange. So you're my landlord? What took you so long?"
Hao Ren was completely confused. Not only had he not expected that the new tenant arranged for him by Raven 12345 would be so shocking, but he had also never imagined that his conversation with a demon would take place in this atmosphere! Of course, what he was even more curious about now was: why was this demon summoned by a demon stone that had been sealed for hundreds of years? Didn't Raven 12345 say that this new tenant had just arrived?
"When did you get here?" Hao Ren spoke while carefully observing the demon's movements. No matter how well-behaved it seemed, he had to remain extremely vigilant. After all, this was a creature that had been described in every story as a ferocious and evil being. In the cultural systems of all mankind, the demon's position on the final Boss ranking list was not something that werewolves and vampires could compare to—but then again, why would Raven 12345, that woman who claimed to be a goddess, arrange for him to receive a demon?!
"Me? I've been here for half a month. I've spent most of that time sleeping. I only sensed movement outside just now," the demon said, spraying sparks of fire. Hao Ren had to jump around to avoid being ignited while listening to it speak, and the demon was very honest and insisted on looking him in the eye when speaking. Hao Ren felt like he was talking to a steel furnace.
"Half a month?" Hao Ren was surprised. He pointed to the demon stone not far away. "This stone has been sealed in the ancient castle for hundreds of years! You've only been here for half a month? Isn't this stone yours?"
"No," the demon shook its head, sending out a large spray of flames. "I don't know who it belongs to, and I've never seen anything like it, but I found it suitable as a power medium, so I connected my power to it. I sleep in another dimension and need a doorbell."
Hao Ren thought about how much trouble he and his two companions had gone through, how much commotion they had caused in the underground palace, and how much impact the demon stone had taken, before finally summoning the main character. He couldn't help but mutter, "Your doorbell isn't very sensitive. The house has to collapse before it rings."
The demon looked clumsy, but its hearing was surprisingly sharp. It grinned. "This thing is pretty sensitive, it's just that I sleep soundly. Actually, it activated as soon as you got close to it, and then it took more than an hour to wake me up."
Hao Ren subconsciously took a few steps back to avoid the flames spraying out of the demon's mouth, his expression quite interesting. "This stone isn't yours? Then its original owner…"
"Ownerless, first come, first served," the demon's booming voice made Hao Ren choke on the second half of his sentence. Then the giant creature looked around. "This place is badly damaged. I didn't break it, did I?"
Hao Ren waved his hand weakly at the demon. "Wait a minute, I need to sort things out."
Then Hao Ren simply sat down on the ground, not caring that there was a Boss-level creature beside him that could provide enough material for several sequels in any movie. Instead, he started pondering the situation himself.
There was no need to doubt the demon's identity. The data terminal wouldn't lie, and the demon had no reason to lie to him. And to be honest, no one would interfere with the kind of bizarre task that Raven 12345 had arranged (Hao Ren didn't think he was worth being schemed against), so it seemed that this was his new tenant.
It was true that the underground palace of Yoford Castle contained a demon stone sealed hundreds of years ago, but the owner of this demon stone had nothing to do with the whole incident—that unlucky fellow who lost his phone could be thrown into the dustbin of history, no need to care who he was.
And the great demon in front of him had come to Yoford Castle half a month ago. He had gone to the wrong place and seemed unfamiliar with the area, so he simply opened a hidden space here and stationed himself there. Then he "borrowed" the demon stone in the basement of the castle, with the reason being that it was a doorbell. Hao Ren guessed that the purpose of this "doorbell" was to sense the arrival of the inspector who came to pick him up.
So, in that case… the real cause of the activation of the defense mechanism in the underground palace, the awakening of the undead guards, Angus being blocked halfway by a wall of runes, and so on, was actually Hao Ren himself!
It was because the stone sensed Hao Ren's appearance nearby that the power left behind by the demon inside it began to activate, which then triggered a series of subsequent problems.
There were still some things that he didn't understand about the whole process, but the general course of events should be correct.
"What's going on…" Hao Ren understood everything and suddenly felt like crying. Then he suddenly remembered that there was one last crucial question that he hadn't figured out. "Wait! Raven 12345 said that when I met the new tenant, there would be a mutual induction. Where's the induction?"
"There was an induction," the data terminal took the initiative to speak. "Didn't you feel it the moment you met this big guy?"
"Feel what?"
"A 'boom' in your head."
Hao Ren was dumbfounded. "Just that? That's the induction?!"
"What else do you want?" The data terminal was very arrogant. "It was taken into consideration that you are slow-witted. In a critical moment, ordinary voice prompts and vibration modes might not attract your attention, so this unit specifically arranged the loudest reminder service for you…"
Hao Ren: "…Would it kill you to explain that in advance?!"
