Chapter 18 Working for a God
Hao Ren focused his eyes on his nose, his nose on his mouth, and his mouth on his heart, sitting on the chair as still as a mountain. His hands were placed on his knees, and his expression was particularly solemn. He realized that he was facing a situation beyond human comprehension. If he wanted to enjoy the rest of his life smoothly, the wisest choice was to restrain his usual lazy and careless style and listen carefully to the woman who called herself a god.
"How was your personal experience with the Creation?" Raven 12345 glanced at Hao Ren, a smile in her eyes.
Hao Ren observed Raven 12345's expression, confirming that this woman was indeed easy to talk to, and then grinned sheepishly, "I want to ask you if this is a hallucination... would you just kill me off?"
"No, because many people have asked you this question, I'm not surprised at all," Raven 12345 shrugged. "I will continue to show you more things until you fully understand and believe what I tell you, but not now. Now you just need to take what I say as true for the time being, and then we'll talk about work."
Hao Ren raised his hand to signal her to stop, because he needed time to sort out what had happened.
He thought the bizarre events he had experienced were just things on Earth, but this woman claimed she was from... another world? Not Earth, not an alien planet, not an alien star system, but another universe! She claimed to be from an empire that ruled the multiverse and worked for a unit called the Space-Time Administration, specializing in managing the order of this universe. Now, this woman who called herself a god said she needed to find an agent to handle the trivial matters of Earth, so she approached Hao Ren...
That's the whole story from beginning to end. The language wasn't hard to understand, but it was quite challenging to one's worldview.
Hao Ren stole a glance at Raven 12345, who obviously noticed it, but didn't show anything. So, taking advantage of this opportunity, Hao Ren began to compare the silver-haired woman in front of him with the image of gods and immortals in his mind, such as adding wings behind her back or a halo behind her head... but he gave up after a while, knowing that it was just a waste of time: from the moment he met the werewolf who was afraid of cats, he should have thrown all the legends on Earth into the sewer.
"There really are other universes?" Hao Ren looked at Raven 12345 tentatively. "I've seen it in books, parallel universes and stuff, is that the theory?"
"It's much more complicated than that. The real structure of the macro-world is much more complex than humans imagine," Raven 12345 curled her lips, seeming too lazy to explain this question. "You won't be able to access things from other worlds for the time being either. That's after you get promoted to a full-time employee or have a special mission. Your main thing now is to take care of your own turf..."
"Why me?" Hao Ren couldn't help but interrupt her. He felt that he had to fight for some initiative, even if he couldn't beat her, he had to try to speak more forcefully. "You didn't ask for my consent, did you?"
"Oh right, I forgot about that," Raven 12345 suddenly slapped her forehead, which made Hao Ren couldn't help but shed a drop of cold sweat. "The principle of voluntary work, there is indeed such a voluntary principle... I always assumed you agreed. So you don't want to?"
Hao Ren was stunned. He didn't expect the other party's conditions to be so loose. This easy-going attitude was different from the mysterious forces he had assumed: he thought he would be killed for refusing to cooperate. But after Raven 12345 offered this loose condition, he hesitated: what should he do? Really refuse? It felt a little regrettable... it seemed like his new life was going to die before it even started.
"What happens if I disagree?"
"Your memories of the past two days will be erased, and I will be responsible for taking the werewolf away. Don't worry, it won't hurt you or the werewolf, it's just that you will no longer have anything to do with these things that you shouldn't have come into contact with. Ordinary people have ordinary people's lives. Since ancient times, those who have come into contact with extraordinary things in a mortal body have died miserably," Raven 12345 explained calmly. "I will find other agents. Anyway, there are many people on Earth. If it doesn't work, I can apply to the higher-ups to send an intern as an assistant."
Hao Ren felt a tightness in his heart, an indescribable feeling spreading over him, and then he shook his head, "Then what if I agree? What exactly do you want me to do? Let's make it clear first, I won't do anything that violates morality, I'm a good person."
The corners of Raven 12345's mouth curled up slightly, "Don't be so nervous. You're working for the God race. In other God systems, this position is even called 'Holy Son' or 'Proxy', but our system is special so we don't call it that. What are you worried about? It won't make you do bad things. Your mission mainly has two parts: First, receive some tenants, just like what you used to do, but these tenants will be a little special. They need help, they need a place to settle down, they need someone to guide them – you have to receive and take care of them so that they don't cause trouble in the human world. Second, help me with other work."
Hao Ren: "..." He instinctively felt that the second thing was the key!
"The tenants you're talking about are like Lily, right?" Hao Ren tried to understand more things, although this wouldn't give him the initiative, it would at least prevent him from being tricked. "'Heterogeneous'? Can I ask why you're doing this? Just because you don't want them to destroy the human world?"
"Actually, the reasons are very complicated," Raven 12345 was very patient. "Any civilization, unless it encounters some catastrophe or other serious situation that requires the gods to personally help, otherwise they all have the right to evolve naturally without interference. I know your human myths and legends, but the real gods are not quite the same as your legends – we create worlds, manage worlds, and destroy worlds, but the above are all subject to strict rules and regulations, and no one can arbitrarily interfere with or destroy the activities of mortals. We made a lot of mistakes in this regard before we changed our careers to become the God race, so now this is a very serious issue. Your world is the same: human civilization should evolve naturally without external interference. It's okay for you to encounter some twists and turns in your own development, but if a third-party force tries to artificially distort the evolution of humanity, I have an obligation to help you block it. As for your mission... it is to clean up the 'aftermath'."
Hao Ren struggled to understand Raven 12345's words, seemingly vaguely grasping something: "You said there's some... 'third-party force' trying to interfere with the human process?! Lily... and the tenants I'm going to receive in the future are all related to this interference?"
"Don't think too much, that was a long time ago. The biggest wave of impact has already been dealt with by me. Your humans are very safe now, as long as you don't court death, you can live until you die," Raven 12345 looked into Hao Ren's eyes. "As for the tenants you're going to receive... they are indeed related to a certain major event, but that's still classified information for you, don't ask too much. So, are you willing to do this? Although it's just helping the Space-Time Administration with cleanup work, to be honest, this is an enviable job in many worlds, it's kind of like a temporary worker with benefits in a public institution..."
Hao Ren: "...The way you put it makes me even more afraid to agree!"
Raven 12345 laughed heartily, not caring at all.
Hao Ren lowered his head, trying hard to think about this question that might change his life.
He still didn't dare to completely believe the woman in front of him, and he couldn't understand what the so-called multiverse, gods, macro-world, and the like were. Just as Raven 12345 said, at this stage, he could only assume everything was true, and then think about what he should do.
If he nodded at this moment, he would embark on a path completely different from the past. In Raven 12345's words, it would be "working for the gods." Whether the silver-haired woman was telling the truth or not, whether there were traps in it or not, and whether the future was smooth or full of dangers, Hao Ren would face a completely new and unimaginable life. His destiny would change, for better or worse.
If he shook his head at this moment, he would only lose two days of memory, forget some things that ordinary people shouldn't have come into contact with, and then go back to being his little landlord honestly, or find a decent job and live the same life as others, find a wife who he didn't love so much but could live with, and live like that until death.
No need to choose.
