Chapter 154: Twins Club
Theo couldn’t stop gazing at Daisy as she sat on the sofa in his office room.
Instead of resting at home, Daisy insisted that she could follow him to the office so as not to delay his work.
He looked back at the document under his hand and sighed. "Ah... what should I do?"
Miles was still not calling him back, and he had thought of every possibility that could come after this, including the Old Man Kennedy using Thomas as leverage to threaten Daisy.
Theo’s hand tightened on the pen, his brows furrowing deeper.
"Theo..." Daisy called softly, but he didn’t respond, too occupied with the storm in his head.
"Theo?" she tried again. This time, she stood up and walked to his desk, leaning forward and waving her hand in front of his face.
Only then did he blink, snapping out of his daze. His gaze shifted up to her, a little startled. "Ah... is there something wrong?" he murmured, voice low, as though he had just been pulled back from somewhere far away.
Daisy shook her head, her brows drawing together in confusion. "Are you okay?" She rounded the table and stood beside his chair, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Why are you sweating?" She reached for his forehead, but he instinctively flinched back.
"I—I’m okay..." he said quickly, blinking as he realized his reaction had been too sharp. He exhaled and forced a faint smile. "What is it? Are you hungry?" He gently reached for her hand, holding it as though grounding himself.
"No..." She tilted her head, gazing at him, her eyes still filled with worry.
"Then... are you bored?" he asked, searching her face, trying to deflect her concern with something lighter.
"I’m looking for my phone..." she said, pressing her lips together, her cheeks puffing slightly. "I remember putting it in my bag earlier, but it’s not there..."
Theo’s grip on her hand tightened ever so slightly before he forced a casual smile. "Really? Maybe you left it in the car?"
"Did I?" She rolled her eyes upward, trying to recall.
"I’ll ask Marla to go and check if your phone is there, okay?" he offered quickly, already reaching for the intercom on his desk.
Daisy blinked at him, a small frown tugging at her lips. "You don’t have to trouble her, Theo. I can just go—"
But before she could finish, he gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "No, let her handle it. You stay here with me." His tone was gentle, but there was an edge of insistence that made Daisy pause.
"Marla... help me check my car if Daisy’s phone is there... come in and take the car key..." Theo spoke into the intercom, his voice even. Then he unpressed the button and leaned back, masking his unease with a faint smile.
Not even half a minute passed before a knock came at the door. Marla pushed it open slightly, peering her head inside. "Sir..."
"Oh, here." Theo stood up and raised the car key he had placed on the table.
Marla quickly stepped forward, reaching for the key. "Phone... right?" She looked between the two of them.
Daisy nodded and smiled sheepishly. "Hmm... I don’t remember where I put my phone..."
Marla gave a small nod of understanding. "Okay, madam."
"Thank you," Daisy added the moment Marla turned to leave.
Marla bobbed her head and smiled politely before slipping out, closing the door behind her.
"I wonder..." Daisy tilted her head curiously toward Theo. "How did you get the twins to work for you?"
Theo raised his brows, pretending to look mysterious. "Because they’re twins..."
Daisy furrowed her brows. "What do you mean?"
"Well... Julian loved participating in clubs when we were in school..." Theo reached for her hand again, guiding her back to the sofa with him. "Not like club clubs... you know what I mean."
Daisy chuckled. "I understand. So... are there special twin clubs in school?"
"Ahh... actually not in school, but in the city." He tilted his head slightly, as though making sure he remembered correctly. "In our school, I think we were the only twins... at least in middle and high school."
Daisy blinked, amused. "So you mean you joined that kind of club when you were young?"
"Not willingly..." Theo chuckled, gently pulling her to sit beside him. "Julian was the one obsessed with finding out about all these so-called ’exclusive clubs.’ He forcefully..." Theo raised two fingers in air quotes with a wry smile, "dragged me along. And in the end, I followed him there."
Her lips curved, eyes sparkling with curiosity. "And? Was it terrible?"
Theo tilted his head, pretending to think, then smirked. "Actually... it wasn’t that bad. Some of the things I learned there came in handy later."
"Like what?" Daisy leaned in, clearly intrigued now.
His smile deepened, a flicker of mischief in his eyes. "Only for twins."
Daisy gasped softly, her brows furrowing. "Oh, that’s kind of rude..." she muttered, though her pout gave her away.
Theo opened his mouth, ready to explain himself or maybe tease her further when a familiar ringtone suddenly chimed inside the office. Too close. Far too close. Both of them froze.
Daisy blinked, her brows knitting in confusion. "Wait... that’s my phone’s ringtone."
Theo’s gaze dropped to the floor for a fraction of a second, his jaw tightening. ’Damn it... I forgot to silence the phone.’
Her frown deepened. "My phone..." Without waiting, Daisy stood up and slipped her hand into his coat pocket.
Theo stiffened instantly, his breath catching in his throat as her fingers brushed against the device he had tried so hard to keep hidden.
"Why do you have my phone?" Daisy’s voice trembled, equal parts confusion and betrayal, as she pulled it free. Her knuckles whitened around it. "Why did you lie?"
Theo gulped, his throat dry. "Daisy... listen... let me explain..." His hand hovered in the air, hesitant to reach for her again. "I didn’t mean to upset you. I was only trying to—"
But Daisy simply sank back into the sofa, her expression calm. The reaction startled him as he had braced himself for anger, shouting, anything.
Her fingers tightened around the phone as she met his gaze. "Explain then."
