Qin Beiting held Yu He's hand and let her sit on his lap, embracing her tightly from behind.
The sudden display of affection made Yu He feel he was acting strangely. She turned her head and asked, "What's wrong?"
"I missed you," Qin Beiting buried his face in the crook of her neck and nuzzled her.
Yu He felt ticklish and raised her hand to hold down his restless head. "Is the matter from last night resolved?"
"Yes, it was the younger brother of a drug lord I took down before who hired people for revenge. They've been caught," Qin Beiting said.
To avoid alarming her, he didn't mention the sniper.
He had simply sent people to protect her secretly.
"Who did you go to see at the hospital?" Qin Beiting asked.
"Your eldest niece, Qin Xinhong. Her fetal heartbeat is developing abnormally, and she asked me to help her with the pregnancy," Yu He said, lowering her eyes.
"You can help with pregnancies?" Qin Beiting was surprised.
"Yes, when I was in the mountains, I often helped my grandmother look after the village's pigs and cattle during their pregnancies and births. I saw it so many times that I learned how to do it."
Yu He spoke casually, but she had put in a lot of effort to learn back then.
Qin Beiting's mouth twitched. "Animals are different from humans, aren't they?!"
Why did he feel like it wasn't Qin Xinhong looking for the girl, but the girl trying to trap someone?
"They're pretty much the same. There are humans too. Sometimes, after delivering a cow's calf, I'd rush to the neighbor's house to deliver their daughter-in-law's baby that same night," Yu He said.
Qin Beiting: "..."
What kind of life did this girl live before?
Chen Dong: "..."
If Qin Xinhong knew Yu He compared her to livestock, what would her expression be?
"Will you be going to the Qin family often after this?" Qin Beiting suddenly asked.
"Uh-huh."
"Actually, if you want to return to the Qin family, you could just come back with me. There's no need to find such an excuse," Qin Beiting added.
Yu He looked at him with surprise. Was this man too clever, or was he a mind reader?
He saw through her intentions at a glance!
"That's different," Yu He said.
She was going to find Qin Xinhong to cause trouble.
"I'll help you with whatever you need to investigate. Please don't put yourself in danger again, okay?" Qin Beiting said.
He thought of the sniper bullet from last night and couldn't help but tighten his embrace around her. He had finally found her and didn't want to lose her again.
"If there's a need, I won't be polite," Yu He subtly refused.
Qin Beiting was still a Qin family member. Dealing with distasteful family matters like finding culprits should be left to an outsider like her.
"...Alright." Qin Beiting hesitated for a moment, then respected her choice and didn't try to persuade her further.
He knew that the more he insisted, the more stubborn she would become.
"What do you want to eat tonight?" he changed the subject.
"Let's cook at home. You haven't tasted my cooking yet, it seems," Yu He said.
Qin Beiting recalled the barbecue from last time, which tasted like salt. He immediately said, "I'll do it then. I'll pan-fry steak."
Yu He immediately nodded at the thought of the crispy on the outside, tender on the inside steak that she could never get tired of eating. "Okay!"
The car returned to the courtyard house. It was late, and the clinic was closed.
Yu He opened the side door. Chen Dong helped Qin Beiting carry the ingredients and flowers from the car into the living room of the west wing.
"Chen Dong, why don't you stay for dinner and try Brother Ting's cooking?" Yu He asked, trying to keep him as he was about to leave.
"No, thank you," Chen Dong smiled and declined.
He thought to himself, *Spare me. I've been fed dog food all the way here. I really don't want to eat any more.*
"Then could you please deliver these flowers to the entrance of the adjacent residential complex? I'll have Qiao Qiao come down to pick them up." Yu He handed him several bouquets of hydrangeas, roses, and sunflowers.
Her grandmother loved all kinds of flowers. She had seen these flowers at the supermarket and bought a few extra bunches because they looked fresh.
"Okay."
After Chen Dong left, Yu He trimmed the remaining flowers and placed them in vases. Qin Beiting, wearing an apron, was marinating the steak in the kitchen.
The atmosphere was pleasant.
Just then, there was a knock on the door. The main gate wasn't locked, and soon Qiao Qiao walked in.
Yu He placed the vases on the dining table and turned around to see her. "Qiao Qiao? What brings you here?"
"Chen Dong said you were back, so I came to see and to tell you something," Qiao Qiao explained.
Then, she subtly glanced at Qin Beiting's back as he was frying steak in the kitchen.
The man's back was straight and tall. The gray apron over his white shirt looked both handsome and domestic.
Just one look made Qiao Qiao's heart flutter.
Back in the mountains, the men in her village never cooked or did housework. They said those were women's tasks.
After coming to the city, she realized that housework wasn't exclusively for women; men could do it too.
A man who could do housework and cook was a truly loving man.
She also wanted to find such a good man to spend the rest of her life with.
"What is it?" Yu He poured her a glass of fresh milk from the refrigerator.
Qiao Qiao immediately looked away. "It's nothing major. It's just that when you were out playing, the Old Madam Qi came to the clinic to see Grandma Yu."
"And then?" Yu He asked.
Qiao Qiao took a sip of milk and continued:
"They were in the consulting room with the door closed, so I don't know what they talked about. However, after Old Madam Qi left, Grandma Yu has seemed rather unhappy for the past couple of days."
Yu He frowned slightly. She was the one who attacked Qi Yuanyuan, so why would Old Madam Qi seek out her grandmother?
"I understand," she nodded.
"Oh, right, Yu He, I heard from my brother that you were attacked by terrorists while you were out playing. Are you all okay?" Qiao Qiao asked, holding Yu He's arm with concern.
Yu He smiled. "We're fine."
"Darling, the steak is ready. Clear the table, and we can eat," Qin Beiting called out from the open kitchen, reminding her.
"Okay!" Yu He responded, clearing the leftover branches from the table.
Qiao Qiao also helped clear the table, sighing enviously, "Yu He, Seventh Master treats you so well. He's truly a good Chinese man."
"Do you want to find such a good boyfriend too?" Yu He raised an eyebrow and looked at her.
"Stop it~" Qiao Qiao said shyly.
Her gaze couldn't help but drift towards the open kitchen. Seeing the man carefully arranging the food on the plate, her cheeks flushed.
Qin Beiting sensed her gaze and looked up, his eyes meeting Qiao Qiao's.
Qiao Qiao was startled and immediately averted her gaze, her cheeks turning even redder.
Seeing this, Qin Beiting frowned slightly and turned his attention to Yu He.
Yu He didn't seem to notice Qiao Qiao's gaze. After clearing the table, she went to wash her hands and, at the same time, carried away a plate of steak that had been served.
Qin Beiting: "..."
"Wow, it smells so good! It must be delicious!" Qiao Qiao swallowed her saliva, sniffing the steak Yu He brought over.
"It is!" Yu He agreed. Seeing how she was drooling, she was about to offer to share some with her when Qin Beiting's indifferent voice came from behind her.
"Qiao Qiao hasn't had dinner yet?"
Qin Beiting brought a plate of steak over. Qiao Qiao thought it was for her and became flustered. She first nodded, then shook her head. "I... I've already eaten."
After speaking, she reached out as if to take it.
Qin Beiting avoided her hand. "Then go back. Don't disturb our meal."
Qiao Qiao: "..."
