Although the meeting ended smoothly, for Wen Xueshan, it felt like a critique session, and she could still sense others' pointed gazes.
The business partners had gradually left, and even before departing, they made sure to greet Wei Yumeng again, a testament to her current standing.
Wei Yumeng didn't rush to leave. As usual, she tidied up the documents, reflecting on her presentation for the day, before finally intending to depart.
Zhan Mohan had initially planned to stay and speak with her, but was called away by other business partners.
Thus, the conference room was left with only Rong Qian and Wen Xueshan.
“Why haven’t you left yet?” Wei Yumeng asked Wen Xueshan with a calm tone.
Wen Xueshan, however, had lost her patience. “Miss Wei, if you think defeating me this way is possible, you’re too naive. Even if you pointed out so many of my flaws today, I can still correct them and do my best.”
Wei Yumeng found it somewhat speechless. She had never encountered someone so brazenly unapologetic for their mistakes.
“It’s best if you can correct them. Otherwise, if the project encounters problems, none of us can bear the consequences.”
After speaking, Wei Yumeng was about to leave, finding no point in such an argument.
But Wen Xueshan still blocked her path and whispered to Wei Yumeng, “Don’t think that by getting close to President Zhan this way, he will choose to return to your side. We’ve collaborated for so long; our rapport and understanding are irreplaceable.”
Hearing this, Wei Yumeng looked at Wen Xueshan in disbelief for a long moment, then replied with a hint of amusement, “Miss Wen, I think you seem to have forgotten something very important. I admit you took over the project earlier than I did, but I haven’t officially divorced Mohan yet. So, as of now, he is still my husband. Do you think your rapport can compare to our many years of marriage?”
This made Wen Xueshan’s face shift from pale to flushed. Her only source of pride was rendered useless in Wei Yumeng's comparison.
Wei Yumeng continued, even smiling at Wen Xueshan, “Of course, most importantly, I believe Mohan wouldn’t be so short-sighted as to fall for someone as incompetent as you.”
This time, Wei Yumeng truly left, leaving Wen Xueshan standing in place, only able to glare ferociously at Wei Yumeng's retreating back.
Because she had already missed her chance with Zhan Mohan before, Wei Yumeng would not give Wen Xueshan any opportunity this time.
As soon as Wei Yumeng reached the hallway, Fang Xun approached her.
“Madam, President Zhan asks you to come over.”
Wei Yumeng didn't reply immediately. After a moment of thought, she asked, “Did he say what it was about?”
If it concerned their relationship, she might need to consider how to respond.
Most importantly, although Wei Yumeng suspected her previous assumptions might be flawed, Zhan Mohan also bore responsibility in this matter.
Not only was she working hard to return to Zhan Mohan’s side, but she also hoped to receive an apology from him.
However, Zhan Mohan seemed to have anticipated this as well, so Fang Xun replied in a perfunctory manner, “President Zhan said it's about work.”
“Work?”
For some reason, Wei Yumeng felt a pang of disappointment. Was work truly the only thing left for her and Zhan Mohan to discuss?
As if worried Wei Yumeng might refuse, Fang Xun added, “President Zhan mentioned that he has some thoughts on the issues you raised in today’s meeting, and he seems willing to completely reform this project through you.”
Upon hearing this, Wei Yumeng finally took a step forward.
In truth, she wondered if she was any different from Zhan Mohan at times. When it came to work, she unconsciously put personal matters aside.
When she realized this, she couldn't help but pause, as if she was beginning to understand why Zhan Mohan had seemed so helpless after she presented her choices.
Perhaps such a decision was a significant matter for anyone.
Fang Xun escorted Wei Yumeng to the office door and left. However, Wei Yumeng stood at the door, hesitating to knock.
Just then, Zhan Mohan’s voice came from inside, “Yumeng?”
Wei Yumeng then pushed the door open and walked in. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you.”
Zhan Mohan gestured for Wei Yumeng to sit. He felt a sense of helplessness at her unfamiliar and polite demeanor.
In fact, Zhan Mohan had many questions he wanted to ask Wei Yumeng, such as why she went to such lengths to join the project.
However, he couldn't ask those questions now. Given Wei Yumeng's current tense state, she would likely not be forthcoming about her intentions.
“I asked you here to discuss the project. I believe Fang Xun has already informed you of the details. I want you to be solely responsible for overseeing this project.”
Zhan Mohan spoke with a hint of weariness, “This project is indeed very important to me, not because it’s mine, but because it’s a project that my wife and I worked hard on, and that she completed in front of so many executives. That’s why I want to make it even better. However, my wife and I have had a disagreement recently, which has made me unable to focus on work. So, if this project is in your hands, I will be more at ease.”
Zhan Mohan said this to counter Wei Yumeng's mindset of separating personal feelings from work.
Wei Yumeng was slightly taken aback. This was the first time she had heard Zhan Mohan explain his reasons for working on this project. She had initially assumed he was constantly innovating in this project simply because of the promising prospects of the new energy sector.
“By the way, Miss Wei, may I ask you a question?” Zhan Mohan looked at Wei Yumeng with a sincere expression. “Why did you join this project? Is it simply to collaborate on a project, or… for me?”
Wei Yumeng hadn't expected Zhan Mohan to be so direct. How should she answer?
