Wei Yumeng had arrived at Chen Yutong's current residence, the address obtained from Zhan Mohan.
She knew that the current Zhan Mohan, due to Elder Master Zhan's situation, might not be able to approach this matter with complete objectivity, so she had instructed Zhan Mohan to only investigate Elder Master Zhan's affairs, and she would try to mediate the issues involving Zhan Yangyi's family.
Although she did care about Chen Yutong's potential transgressions against Elder Master Zhan, she was certain of one thing: the child in Chen Yutong's womb was blameless. Therefore, even if not for Chen Yutong, she had to make this trip for the sake of the child.
Wei Yumeng arrived at Chen Yutong's doorstep and knocked, but there was no response from inside.
However, before coming, she had confirmed with the building manager that Chen Yutong was indeed at home. Her not opening the door might simply be a refusal to see her.
"Yutong, it's me. I want to talk to you," Wei Yumeng called out directly to the door. "I don't know what happened between you and Big Brother, but there's something I know you care about more. You want the child to be well, but is it truly good for them to keep living in a place like this with the child?"
As soon as Wei Yumeng finished speaking, Chen Yutong opened the door.
Wei Yumeng breathed a sigh of relief. "Sister-in-law, you finally decided to open the door."
Chen Yutong did not seem to welcome her. "If Yangyi sent you, please tell him I will not go back. If he wants a divorce, I have no other opinion."
In Zhan Yangyi's heart, she was already the murderer of Elder Master Zhan. How could she go back?
"You've misunderstood," Wei Yumeng explained. "I didn't tell anyone I was coming here today. I just wanted to talk to you and understand what exactly happened."
Chen Yutong looked at her with suspicion, still somewhat unconvinced.
After all, the only ones who knew her address were Zhan Mohan and the others. Wei Yumeng being able to find her must have gotten the address from Zhan Mohan.
Therefore, Zhan Mohan and the others must have known Wei Yumeng's intentions.
"You should go. I have nothing to say," Chen Yutong said, attempting to close the door.
But Wei Yumeng reached out and held onto the doorframe. "Yutong, listen to me. Nothing will be resolved if we continue like this. And it's not definite that you did anything to Grandpa, is it?"
Hearing this, Chen Yutong froze. Even Wei Yumeng thought so, so why did Zhan Yangyi suspect her of being that kind of woman?
Seeing that Chen Yutong had reacted, Wei Yumeng quickly said, "I believe you. So please give me a chance to understand what happened and then let's resolve it, okay? Just for the child's future. You don't want the child to be born without a father and still have to live in a place like this with you."
Chen Yutong bit her lower lip. She had to admit that Wei Yumeng had touched her soft spot. Regardless of anything else, she needed to consider the child's future life.
"Come in," Chen Yutong finally moved her hand away and let Wei Yumeng into the room.
Looking at the state of the room, Wei Yumeng felt a pang of sadness.
From her understanding of Chen Yutong, she was someone who cared deeply about quality of life. Yet now, she was living in such a place.
In reality, if she hadn't had this falling out with Zhan Yangyi, perhaps it wouldn't have come to this.
"Don't bother yourself. Let's sit down and talk properly," Wei Yumeng said, stopping Chen Yutong, who was about to pour her water.
"What do you want to know?" Chen Yutong's voice was devoid of emotion.
Wei Yumeng pondered. She knew that the inheritance matter was not for her to inquire about, so she decided to first clarify what happened regarding Elder Master Zhan.
Although Chen Yutong was still a suspect, Wei Yumeng believed she could distinguish truth from lies.
"I want to know... what did Grandpa say to you when he kept you behind that day?" Wei Yumeng asked directly, without beating around the bush.
Chen Yutong glanced at her slightly. "Aren't you worried I'll lie to you?"
Wei Yumeng shook her head. "You're already in this situation. Lying to me won't get you any benefits."
"That day Grandpa did make a request of me. He said..." Chen Yutong's thoughts seemed to drift back to that day. "He said he hoped I could kill him."
Meanwhile, Zhan Mohan had Fang Xun re-examine the hospital situation. Originally, due to Chai Yanyu's involvement with the city hospital, he hadn't intended to bother Vincent. However, he now re-questioned Vincent.
"I have confirmed the situation that day multiple times. I even personally reviewed the corridor surveillance. If anyone else had entered the Old Master's room, it would have been impossible not to see them. Therefore, I can confidently tell you that the last person to leave Zhan Old Master's ward was indeed that Miss Chen," Vincent stated the results of his thorough investigation.
Zhan Mohan had seen this news many times and was not surprised.
But Vincent took a deep breath and mentioned another possibility. "Besides Miss Chen, there is one other person who could have done this."
"Who?" Zhan Mohan's tone turned cold. If such a person existed, he would never let them go.
"It was the Old Master himself," Vincent said. "The instrument that was tampered with was not very far from the Old Master. With a slight extension of his arm and a little help, he could have reached the switch."
Upon hearing this, Zhan Mohan's heart sank. He couldn't help but recall his greatest worry at the time.
When he saw the Old Master's state of wishing for death rather than life, he couldn't even determine if such treatment was beneficial for him.
And they, in their persistent efforts, had never once asked for the Old Master's thoughts.
If it was truly the Old Master himself...
Zhan Mohan rubbed his temples. He didn't want to believe this possibility, and these were just speculations.
"Mr. Zhan, I know what I'm about to say might not be what you want to hear, but I still have to tell you," Vincent sighed. "I've heard several nurses mention more than once that the Old Master said that kind of life was too painful. Rather than worrying you and making you go to great lengths, he would rather leave early."
Zhan Mohan remained silent. He knew that this was indeed something Elder Master Zhan would say.
After all, they had gone to great lengths just to get the Old Master to accept treatment.
"Thank you. I understand," Zhan Mohan hung up the phone.
He had to reconsider the possibility of Zhan Old Master being murdered.
