Chapter 540 Who Exactly Is This Person

“What are you doing?” Zhan Mohan was also surprised by her action.

She looked at Zhan Mohan, her pride and self-esteem having long been worn down in prison.

“I beg you to let me go, don’t send me back. In that man-eating place, every day was like a slow torture for me. I no longer love you, nor do I want to disturb your life. Please, don’t send me back, okay?”

Her love for Zhan Yichen had vanished along with her dignity. Facing a man as supreme as a god, she felt no admiration and harbored no illusions.

Only after losing her freedom completely did she understand the meaning of “If freedom is what you seek, both can be cast aside.” Now, she would rather be a despised squatter here, waiting for the developer to raise the price to a point she deemed acceptable before leaving.

With the immense profits extracted by these merchants, a meager handout from their clenched teeth would be enough for her to buy a few decent clothes, then move to a small city to work an ordinary job and support herself.

Legally, she was a dead person now, unqualified to complain about her food not being fresh. Starvation was what she worried about every day.

Having endured physical torture and mental torment, she realized that failing to win a man’s heart was a common occurrence.

Now, facing Zhan Mohan, she no longer felt the urge to approach him; instead, she wanted to escape as quickly as possible.

Seeing her like this, Zhan Mohan was deeply moved. He pulled her up from the ground.

He lowered his voice as much as possible when speaking, “Have you really not seen Mu Linjing? And you haven’t sent any packages to us from here?”

Jiang Siyu looked completely bewildered by these questions.

“What are you talking about? I haven’t left my home, afraid that someone would come and tear down my house the moment I stepped out. How could I have seen her? Besides, she wouldn’t come to a place like this. As for the package you mentioned, that’s even more ridiculous.”

Judging by her current state and the expression on her face when she spoke, she didn’t seem to be lying.

The situation seemed to have reached a stalemate. The only thing certain was that Jiang Siyu was not the one who led them to this place; it was someone else.

However, if even Zhan Mohan didn’t know Jiang Siyu was in this location, who else could?

“How did you manage to escape?”

He asked this question again, and Jiang Siyu, not being foolish, could tell that their discovery of her secret was unintentional. Just as she was about to speak, a gunshot suddenly rang out from outside.

Zhan Mohan reacted swiftly, lunging forward and pulling her down with him.

Despite this, a smell of burning fabric emanated from Zhan Mohan’s shoulder, and thick blood dripped onto Jiang Siyu’s face.

“Ah Han! You’re injured!”

Zhan Mohan covered her mouth, speaking with difficulty, “Don’t make a sound. We’ll be in danger soon.”

Jiang Siyu, having already died once, immediately propped up Zhan Mohan and followed behind them. Zhan Yichen was at the front. Since the engagement had already begun, the enemy was no longer hiding, and many men in black were openly approaching this solitary courtyard.

He hid behind the main door, aimed, and quickly fired a shot before retreating behind the door panel.

When Zhan Mohan prepared these, considering that this was a village with residents, he feared causing unnecessary public panic or harming innocents, so he had equipped the guns with silencers.

He hadn’t expected that this would provide them with an opportunity to counterattack.

With the iron gate in front of them as a barrier, they might not be doomed.

Following Zhan Yichen’s methods, they eliminated most of the men in black. Their marksmanship was precise, every shot finding its target, quickly reducing the enemy’s numbers by half.

Zhan Mohan pulled Jiang Siyu by her hand behind his back. “Stay close to me. There’s a car across the road. In a moment, just run for the car. Leave the rest to us.”

Jiang Siyu clutched his sleeve and nodded heavily.

Outside the door, those people were already drawing near.

Zhan Yichen first fired several shots at the main door, then with a powerful kick, he flung the door open outwards. The unsuspecting attackers were hit by the iron door, which also opened a path for them to escape.

Otherwise, they would have been trapped like fish in a barrel within this courtyard.

Following the plan, they retreated while fighting, and Jiang Siyu was to run across the road.

Just as she was about to open the car door, she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her calf. The sound of flesh being pierced and a burning smell penetrated her leg muscles.

Hearing her scream, Zhan Mohan rolled several times, evading all the attacks, and quickly rushed over, throwing her into the back seat before accelerating the car and making a sharp turn, using the vehicle to shake off their pursuers.

Zhan Yichen and Fang Xun also used this opportunity to jump into the car. Once inside, they quickly drove out of the area. Knowing that the pursuers wouldn’t follow them into the city, Zhan Mohan drove directly to the hospital.

Jiang Siyu’s leg needed immediate medical attention, otherwise, she might develop some lasting problem.

After sending Jiang Siyu into surgery, the few of them could finally catch their breath.

“After she comes out, find someone to guard her hospital room. Also, arrange for people to covertly patrol this hospital to prevent any suspicious individuals from entering.”

Fang Xun began to arrange this matter, while Zhan Yichen pondered the entire incident. He was somewhat uncertain, “Brother, these people are nine times out of ten the same group who attacked us on the island that day. Do you think it’s possible that Jiang Siyu is in league with them?”

He still didn’t trust Jiang Siyu, and with Jiang Siyu’s cunning, if she wanted to put on a show, a stratagem of feigned suffering wasn’t impossible.

Zhan Mohan wasn’t entirely sure about this. He was thinking about something else, “I’m more interested in whether the person who helped Jiang Siyu escape is the same one who attacked us?”

The number of people who knew about Jiang Siyu’s escape must be small. If she truly knew nothing about Mu Linjing’s disappearance or the sending of packages, then she was being used.

That person, at least, knew their relationship and knew that she had escaped.

Who could this person be?

Without knowing who their opponent was, the other party always resorted to unexpected and extreme measures, aiming for their lives right from the start. Such an experience, besides being perilous, also fueled a curiosity to uncover the truth.

Zhan Mohan was almost certain that this person was paying close attention to their lives, which allowed them to skillfully use this timing to create such chaos.

He had already been attacked twice, yet he still didn’t know who his opponent was. This person made him very interested in the challenge.
