Wei Yumeng hesitated, realizing her tone had been too sharp. She knew Zhan Mohan well. Although he remained expressionless, she sensed her words had hurt him.
Considering their past as a couple, and that they once had feelings for each other, she knew Zhan Mohan wouldn't deliberately make things difficult for her. Wei Yumeng sighed, her voice softer now, no longer aggressive.
"I've just been worried about making ends meet these past few days, and my emotions got a bit out of control. I know you're not that kind of person, but why are you interfering with me finding a job?"
Zhan Mohan hadn't expected her to change her tune so quickly. One moment she was angrily questioning him, the next she had completely softened.
He didn't want to get angry with her, but her sudden resignation and her strong determination to leave him had affected him.
However, as a man, he had his pride and some emotions he could only suppress and was unwilling to show.
He cupped his fist, brought it to his lips, and cleared his throat. His voice remained even, giving off a business-like demeanor.
"Your resignation was sudden, and many tasks were not properly handed over. The company also hasn't found a suitable replacement for your work yet."
Wei Yumeng had to admit, she hadn't anticipated Zhan Mohan's divorce from her either; it was too abrupt. But in that situation, anyone would have done the same.
She was usually responsible at work and never made mistakes. This time, there was a reason, as Xin Ran hadn't yet found her a job.
"Then I can stay and handle the handover of my remaining work before leaving. Could Mr. Zhan please reconsider?"
She was referring to him not interfering with her job search anymore.
Just as Zhan Mohan was about to agree, his phone rang. He raised his hand.
"One moment."
He opened his phone, and his gaze fell upon a photo. The two people in it were Wei Yumeng and Xin Ran, sitting in a coffee shop, with Xin Ran handing Wei Yumeng a card.
The man's expression instantly turned grim, and his gaze towards Wei Yumeng became sharp.
Wei Yumeng, standing beside him, noticed his change in demeanor and asked, "Is something wrong on your end?"
The man suddenly turned to her, his imposing presence making Wei Yumeng stumble backward. Zhan Mohan pinned her against the wall, his eyes dark and sinister.
"Wei Yumeng, since Xin Ran is willingly giving you money, I don't think you need to find a job. And you certainly don't need to be so hypocritically questioning me!"
He had even felt sorry for her just moments ago. The man was now consumed by anger, his tightly clenched fists revealing bulging veins on the back of his hands.
The atmosphere in the office plummeted.
Wei Yumeng quickly realized he was referring to her meeting with Xin Ran today.
She instinctively explained, "Xin Ran and I just happened to meet. I didn't accept the card." Then, her eyes sharpened, "Zheng Yuanyuan sent you the photo, didn't she?"
She couldn't think of anyone else.
The man let out a sarcastic laugh. "Does it matter who sent it to me at this point?"
Wei Yumeng found it rather amusing. They were divorced now; what right did he have to accuse her? Moreover, she and Xin Ran were innocent. It was he and Jiang Siran who were entangled, practically throwing away their last shred of dignity.
Since Zhan Mohan refused to believe her, there was no point in continuing the conversation.
"Then Mr. Zhan should find someone to take over my work as soon as possible. I will handle the remaining tasks. As for Xin Ran and me, I don't need to explain myself to you."
Wei Yumeng's words were like a knife to his heart. His suppressed anger flared up again.
"Fine, Wei Yumeng, very good. Now that Xin Ran is backing you, you're getting more and more defiant."
"Mr. Zhan, aren't you the same? Your old flame is back, you must have been waiting for a long time."
They were both hurting each other in the cruelest ways, and in doing so, hurting themselves.
Zhan Mohan's face turned ashen, his lips pressed tightly together. He wanted to say more, but he didn't know what else to say.
The ringing of his phone suddenly broke their stalemate. Zhan Mohan turned to answer it.
"Mr. Zhan, Miss Jiang Siran was injured at the event. Her condition is very serious, and she has been sent to the hospital."
Zhan Mohan frowned. "Which hospital?"
"The exact address has been sent to your phone. There are many media outlets here; we need you to arrange for someone to control the situation."
"Understood." The man hung up, grabbed his jacket from the back of the chair, and prepared to leave. Wei Yumeng's mocking voice came from behind him.
"Jiang Siran is in trouble, and you need to rush over there now, right?"
She couldn't help but notice his worry for her.
Zhan Mohan paused, his expression cold. "Weren't you also eager to reconcile with Xin Ran? But Zheng Yuanyuan is in the way."
With that, the man slammed the door shut and left.
Wei Yumeng stood rooted to the spot, her shoulders trembling. Hot tears streamed down her face the moment he left.
So, he had indeed divorced her for Jiang Siran. Especially when he heard about Jiang Siran's accident, his panicked and worried expression was like a brand searing her.
Zhan Mohan quickly drove to the hospital and called Fang Xun on the way.
"Jiang Siran had an accident at the event and is now in the hospital. You calm down the media and the distributors."
"Mr. Zhan, please go ahead. I'll handle things here. However… what about Mrs.?"
Fang Xun remembered they were in his office discussing matters.
Mentioning Wei Yumeng, Zhan Mohan fell silent for a moment before speaking again.
"Handle your own work first. Don't ask about anything else."
"Understood."
It seemed their discussion had broken down.
Zhan Mohan arrived at the hospital and found Jiang Siran lying weakly in a hospital bed.
As soon as Jiang Siran saw Zhan Mohan, she almost burst into tears.
"Ahan..."
Zhan Mohan walked over. "What happened?"
The female assistant, who had been taking care of Jiang Siran's affairs, replied.
"Mr. Zhan, it was an oversight by the workers who built the stage. It wasn't stable, and Miss Jiang happened to be standing there when it suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, the host next to Miss Jiang pulled her away, otherwise..."
Jiang Siran tightly gripped Zhan Mohan's hand, her pale face filled with fear.
"Ahan... I was so scared. I thought I was going to die and never see you again."
"Don't worry. Zhan Group will hold them accountable and seek justice for you. Rest well during this time; I'll have my assistant postpone your work."
Thankfully, it hadn't been fatal, or the consequences would have been severe.
Jiang Siran looked at the man hopefully. "Ahan, you'll stay with me, won't you? I'm still terrified when I think about that scene..."
