Chapter 77: Holy Mountain (Part Two)
Two shadows slowly appeared in the night sky to the left, their shapes massive and bizarre, not resembling common evil beasts. As they drew closer, Yezi realized they were two humanoid-like creatures riding on the backs of mixed breeds. Their bodies were tall, twice the size of normal people, without armor, wearing clothes made of an indistinguishable material – no, calling them clothes was a stretch; they were more like bloated animal hides, wrapping them tightly from head to toe, bulging in many places.
The most striking feature was the headgear they wore, obviously modified from the heads of evil beasts, hideous and terrifying. The eyes of the skulls had been gouged out and replaced with stitched-on reddish-brown crystals. A patched leather tube extended from the lower edge of their headgear, stretching to a large carapace sac on their backs. One of the creatures had several spears stuck to its mount, while the other wore a uniquely shaped iron gauntlet – from its appearance, it only had three fingers.
Only one word flashed through Yezi's mind: "Devils."
"Prepare for battle!"
Hakala was the first to react, her piercing shriek drawing everyone's attention back to the enemy. The Stonewoman placed her hand on the ground, turning a large area of snow in front of her into a soft swamp. This was a very correct response: the mounts under the enemy were wolf-headed winged hybrids, fast-moving and capable of short-distance flight. But these two obviously couldn't; their wings had been cut off, the exposed bones tied with hemp rope, held in the devils' hands. If they couldn't fly over the swamp, they would have to go around, which would give the other sisters time to react.
However, the enemies did not act according to the witches' plan. They drove their mounts forward, plunging into the swamp, and then, using the momentum, leaped from the backs of the evil beasts, crossing several zhang, landing behind the Stonewoman. And there, was where the non-combat sisters were gathered.
"Scatter!" Before Yezi could finish speaking, the devil wearing the three-fingered iron gauntlet had already begun to slaughter in the crowd. His agility was completely mismatched to his size. A witch who was close by didn't even have time to react before her head was shattered by a punch. Then two more sisters had their necks broken by the thick iron hand, and only then did the others wake up, panicking and scattering in all directions. Only Sino stood in place, although her ability was not suitable for combat, she did not turn and run away, but took down a crossbow from her back, leveled it, and shot at the enemy. The iron-handed devil dodged sideways, lifted his foot, and kicked her away. The force was so great that it sounded like a muffled thunder. The little girl flew a long distance before rolling to the ground, continuously spitting out clots of blood.
The devil carrying the spear turned around and walked towards the Stonewoman, who had already been frightened and didn't know what to do. Just as the spear was about to pierce the witch's chest, a ball of fire exploded in front of him. Red Pepper rolled under the enemy, grabbed the Stonewoman's hand, and turned to run. The opponent wanted to chase after her, but was blocked by a wall of black energy.
Yezi poured all her magic into the earth, and all kinds of plants grew wildly, twisting into a thorny vine that crawled towards the iron-handed devil. The "Agony" demon snakes summoned by Hakala also bit down hard on the opponent's arm. Just as he waved his hand to shake off those annoying poisonous snakes, the vine that had quietly approached from behind suddenly pounced, wrapped around his feet, and then pulled back, and the enemy's huge body crashed to the ground.
"Run, sisters, run!" Yezi shouted, fear making her voice tremble. Run away, quickly get away from these terrible monsters, they are the source of evil recorded in the ancient books, devils that crawled out of the gates of hell!
The tormenting venom of the demon snakes seemed to be ineffective against them. The iron-handed devil, who had fallen to the ground, arched his body, seeming to want to grab the vine that was dragging him around. The spear-wielding devil, seeing that his companion was in trouble, quickly turned his attention to Yezi, who was controlling the vine. He raised his spear, assumed a throwing posture, and his arm quickly swelled up. The originally bulging skin was stretched to a thin layer, and even dark red blood vessels and bones could be seen through the skin.
"Yezi, be careful!" The Stonewoman once again turned the ground into a mud pit, this time directly under the opponent's feet. The devil sank suddenly, and the spear he threw instantly changed direction, slantingly inserted into the ground in front of Yezi, the nearly one-person-high spear body almost completely submerged, scaring Yezi into a cold sweat.
The swollen arm quickly withered after throwing the spear, soon becoming like dry firewood.
The spear-wielding devil could not throw continuously! She immediately realized that now was a good time to escape. The other witches also noticed this, and the Stonewoman, along with Red Pepper and Chasing Wind, ran past the iron hand still struggling on the ground, running towards Hakala, who was unattended, wanting to take the mentor away together. Only Yezi saw that the devil being dragged by the vines stretched out his hands towards the three.
What did he want to do? Wait!
"No—" She didn't even have time to warn them before a dazzling light burst from the devil's iron hand, like a lightning bolt piercing the sky, twisting and hitting the three sisters. The light jumped between the three, making crackling explosion sounds. White smoke rose from their bodies, they convulsed and fell, and their robes also began to burn.
This attack seemed to consume a great deal of the enemy's strength. He made a heavy breathing sound and stopped moving. At this time, Yezi's magic had also reached its limit. The vines disintegrated and differentiated, soon turning into withered weeds.
It's all over, she thought. The mentor's desperate cries seemed to become very distant, and the strength of her whole body receded like a tide. She fell weakly to the ground.
After only a moment of rest, the iron hand slowly got up from the snow and walked to Hakala, who had a look of horror on her face. At this time, no one could stop him anymore. The devil reached out and choked the mentor's throat. The latter desperately wanted to pry open the opponent's fingers, but it was meaningless in the face of the disparity in strength. During the struggle, demon snakes swarmed out, biting the enemy's arms and neck, but the opponent remained unmoved and continued to tighten his iron hand.
At this moment, an accident happened. A demon snake bit off the leather tube below the devil's headgear in a random attack. Red mist spewed out from the break, quickly enveloping Hakala and the devil. The former let out a terrifying scream, her skin rapidly festering under the red mist, exposing tendons and bones. The latter released his iron hand,慌张地想要去堵住管子, as the mist quickly dissipated, his body began to tremble uncontrollably, and soon he fell headlong to the ground, never to move again.
The spear-wielding devil, with half of his body buried in the swamp, screamed when he saw this. Yezi had never heard such a sound, a mixture of sharp hissing and deep roaring,刺得她耳朵生痛不已.
But the enemy's roar did not make Yezi flee in panic, but instead made her see the only chance for victory.
Biting her lip, she struggled to stand up, picked up the hand crossbow that Sino had dropped, re-cocked it, loaded an arrow, and walked to the spear-wielding devil. The devil obviously understood what she wanted to do, and waved his arms desperately, but in the swamp, the more he struggled, the faster he sank. He tried to block the tube, but the part extending to the carapace sac on his back was completely exposed.
For my lost sisters, Yezi thought, aiming at the tube and pulling the trigger.
The crossbow arrow accurately penetrated the leather tube, and red mist spewed out from the break. When the mist was exhausted, the opponent's head drooped.
She killed the devil.
Dropping the crossbow and looking back at the more than ten lifeless sisters, Yezi fell to her knees and cried loudly.
