Chapter 1416: Trapped in Peril

Cham felt a momentary dizzy spell, his ears filled with the sound of twisting metal, the hissing of escaping steam, and Hank's screams.

The moment seemed to stretch on forever. When the carriage finally came to a halt, his body was lying sideways by the window.

Fortunately, his limbs still obeyed his commands. He rolled over, peered out, and climbed up, the entire process unimpeded. This meant he was mostly intact – there was no better news than surviving a derailment, even if only temporarily.

"Hey, buddy, you okay?" He groped his way to Hank through the swirling smoke and mist.

"Ugh... I think I'm alright," Hank groaned. "God above, what in the world was that?"

"Evil beasts destroyed the tracks, we have to get out of here, now." Cham patted him on the shoulder. "I don't know which city you're from, but remember, in Neverwinter, the gods won't protect you. Only His Majesty the King and this rifle can. Now, move with me."

Climbing out of the train head through the overhead window, he saw the entire train was crippled, the carriages lying haphazardly below the roadbed, forming a winding, broken line. However, probably because it was decelerating before the derailment, the carriages were not badly damaged, basically remaining intact. Many people were spontaneously pushing open the carriage doors and windows, trying to climb out of these openings.

It was at this moment that Cham heard a clear gunshot.

His heart skipped a beat, and he turned to Hank and shouted, "Listen up, you go help everyone get out of here, and then lead them to retreat west!"

Without the train, continuing to move towards the First Site was too risky, and here he could already see the outline of the Misty Forest – as long as they ran into Lady Leaf's territory, they should be able to escape the pursuit of the evil beasts.

"I, I understand..."

Seeing the other nod, Cham started running across the top of the carriages.

He had to find Xia quickly.

Reaching the last carriage, Cham found that the militia was fighting with several wolf species that had caught up. They had already left several bodies behind, but still relentlessly tried to climb onto the roof.

He released the safety and opened fire on the wolf species from a distance of less than ten meters – although this was his first time pulling the trigger on an enemy, the past training allowed him to quickly find his footing. Soon he helped the militia to kill them all.

However, before he could catch his breath and ask everyone where the witch was, the ground suddenly trembled! The shell casings on the train slid down, making a clanging sound.

When the tremor reached its peak, the land in front of him suddenly bulged, and a huge worm broke out of the ground, lying in front of everyone with its bloody mouth open!

"Damn, what the hell is that thing?" The militiamen exclaimed, pulling the triggers. The monster was immediately splattered with blood, but compared to its huge body, the injuries caused by the bullets were not enough to be fatal.

Then the worm's skin swelled up, and Cham could even clearly see the pulsing blue blood vessels underneath – accompanied by a disgusting wriggling sound, a group of evil beasts covered in mucus were actually spat out by it.

Cham could hardly believe his eyes. Among the evil beasts, there was actually such a strange monster?

But at this time, he had no time to be amazed. Most of the newly appeared evil beasts were hybrids. Once they dispersed, the unlucky one would definitely be him.

"Fire, fire!" he shouted as he shot at the enemy.

This sentence also awakened the militia, who used the train as cover and poured firepower on the evil beasts from the gaps.

In an instant, many hybrid species were strangled by the net of fire before they even stood up straight. But the giant worm did not shrink after spitting out the evil beasts, but became larger and larger, until a pair of fangs stabbed out from the inside, tearing the worm's big mouth completely, and finally a hybrid species emerged, covered in blood!

The moment he saw it, Cham's heart turned cold.

That was a monster he had only heard about from his father – the thick fangs and four feet and two hands all indicated that it was the legendary Hellspawn, also the most difficult enemy to deal with among the hybrid species. Not only did it appear in Neverwinter's border area only a handful of times, but ordinary firearms could not stop it from attacking!

After the Spawn tore open the worm's mouth, it raised its fangs and charged straight towards the train!

Cham instinctively jumped to the ground. Almost at the same time, the enemy slammed heavily into the carriage, causing the heavy body to slide – two militiamen who did not have time to dodge were knocked to the ground by the carriage and directly crushed by the body, becoming a pool of blurred flesh without even uttering a scream.

And the Spawn was also temporarily unable to move because its fangs were deeply embedded in the iron skin. Others opened fire on the target, but it was useless except to make the former even more manic.

Suddenly, a slender figure rushed into the battlefield – it was clearly a human woman, which made everyone involuntarily raise their guns.

"Danger, get out of the way!"

Cham recognized the other party at a glance and blurted out, "Boshan!"

Boshan ignored everyone's warnings, made a forward leap and rolled, directly rushing into the Spawn's abdomen. This made Cham's heart jump to his throat. If she wasn't careful, she would be trampled into meat paste under the monster's feet.

Boshan probably also knew this. While closely following the monster's struggling footsteps, she reached out and grabbed the other party – the thick fur began to wither at a speed visible to the naked eye, and the Hellspawn let out a terrifying roar!

As if receiving an order, the remaining evil beasts turned their heads and rushed towards this huge monster, their target obviously the witch below. The situation suddenly became extremely critical. Once the agile wolf species or raptor species approached Boshan, she would definitely be powerless to resist. And opening fire at this distance was likely to accidentally injure her, and everyone was caught in a dilemma.

Damn, there's no other way!

Cham gritted his teeth, roared, and rushed out from behind the carriage, running straight towards the struggling Spawn.

The situation took a strange turn. Just now the two sides were in a state of pursuit and being pursued, but now it has become a race to see who can get to the Spawn's side faster.

A bear species evil beast turned its head and bit at him, but he did not dodge or avoid, and handed the rifle forward –

"Get out of the way!"

At the moment of firing, the barrel almost reached the target's forehead.

With a bang, the bear species' head split apart and collapsed. Cham didn't even look and directly crossed its body and continued to run wildly!

To reduce the chance of accidental injury, there was no other way but to shorten the distance!

"Ah--"

At this moment, mutated hawks and wild boars had pounced on the Spawn. They risked being crushed by their own kind, opened their mouths and bit at Boshan, trying to force her out of the dead corner. And Boshan also knew who the most threatening target was, and held on to the Spawn's abdomen, letting her body be exposed to the evil beasts' bite.

The withered area quickly spread over half of the body. Cham also rushed to Boshan's side and engaged in close combat with the evil beasts. Without manual reloading and with high-capacity magazines, the Vana-style rifle showed its advantages at this moment. Whether it was a thick-skinned wild boar or a wolf-lion hybrid, as long as its head took a shot, it would basically die on the spot. The raptor species was directly dealt with by the butt of the gun. Of course, he was bitten a lot – in order to protect Boshan, sometimes he could only use his body to block the enemy's attack.

The Spawn finally pulled out its long fangs, but its strength was also exhausted. The decaying power had spread throughout its body. The fur that originally seemed indestructible was now as fragile as paper, and could no longer bear the weight of its organs.

It staggered twice and crashed to one side, with a large number of internal organs and intestines gushing out from the first withered part, while also spreading was an extremely pungent, rotten smell.

Cham saw that those organs were like they had been soaked in the sewer for months, and had long been swollen and white.

The surviving evil beasts scattered in a panic, seeming to be completely scared out of their wits.

He endured the pain all over his body and caught Boshan, who had lost her support and was falling backwards, in his arms.

At this moment, the witch's body was in a terrible state, with bloody wounds everywhere. Her feet, which had been gnawed by the wild boar, were a bloody mess, with the skin and flesh torn open, revealing the bones beneath.
