Gods Vanish on a Cloudy Day

Chapter 1 Su Zhou

“Are you saying myths and legends, and all records of the supernatural are fake? What do you know?”

“Just because you haven't seen a ghost doesn't mean they don't exist? You haven't seen a spider the size of a head or a sperm whale, does that mean they don't exist either?”

“You think magic is unreasonable? You *think*? Who are you? Are you qualified to say that? You're so awesome, huh?”

“Forget it, this is just a toxic environment, full of trolls.”

Slender, powerful fingers with well-defined joints flashed rapidly across the screen. The force was gentle, but the momentum was overwhelming. After typing the last letter and hitting send, the smooth 5G network transmitted it. At the same time, the phone screen, which was displaying a certain forum app, was turned off.

The black screen reflected the face of a black-haired teenager wearing a cyan shirt. He was handsome and sunny, neat and fresh, definitely a clean-cut pretty boy.

One could see a fallen leaf on his tidy, choppy hair.

Watering posts daily and engaging in verbal battles with forum trolls, Su Zhou felt refreshed and full of energy. After removing the leaf from his head, even the soreness in his waist, caused by sitting on a bus for a long time and being jostled on mountain roads, eased, and his whole person radiated with vitality.

"Ah, as expected, shitposting is important for stress relief." He wiped his phone screen, got up from the tree stump by the roadside, and stretched like a cat: "That's the stuff!"

The vast primeval forest of the Kachin Mountains separated the Zhen and Shan borders, as if a sharp sword had divided the two countries in two. One side was the land of Dian Prefecture in Zhen, and the other was the mountainous forests of Shan.

At the edge of the mountain's primeval forest, outside the only hotel in the tourist village, the simple parking lot was already filled with cars from all over. Three Chinese tourist buses were particularly conspicuous, occupying a corner of the parking lot.

Su Zhou was standing in the shade of a tree by the road, breathing in the fresh air, waiting for the rest of the tour group to finish their meal and then set off for the observation points in the mountains.

July 23, 2014, Wednesday, summer vacation, Kachin Mountains, Shan State.

Su Zhou, a 17-year-old high school student, was spending his last bit of leisure time before the college entrance exams here.

He was going to the recently extremely popular scenic spot, 'Kachin Snake Valley', to see with his own eyes what was going on with the 'two-headed snake colony' that had been circulating wildly on the internet.

"Ancient myths sung in northwestern Shan State mention the existence of seven snake gods. Snake Valley is the site where snake gods were worshiped in the past."

"The appearance of two-headed snakes here is definitely not a coincidence - there must be something mysterious behind it."

Su Zhou, talking to himself, rotated the phone in his hand, making it spin on his right fingertip. The weight of the rectangular phone was not balanced, and it was difficult to maintain its dynamic equilibrium with the fingertip when spinning, always threatening to fly off.

But the boy could rebuild the balance with just a shake of his finger, allowing it to continue spinning. While spinning his phone, he glanced at the watch on his left wrist: "One fifteen in the afternoon, counting the gathering and the journey, I estimate we'll arrive at three."

"I really can't wait."

Let me introduce again: Su Zhou, 17 years old, is a student.

He's a lover of strange tales and folklore, a sports enthusiast, an ultimate man of action, and a person who firmly believes that various myths and legends and supernatural rumors are not false.

And, a quasi-ability user!

Because his grades on the provincial unified exam at the end of his sophomore year were good and showed improvement, he was rewarded by his parents and allowed to indulge himself one last time before his senior year. What he chose was to go abroad, come to the primeval jungle of Shan State, and see with his own eyes those two-headed strange snakes said to have the blood of 'snake gods'.

As for whether it was a deceptive gimmick, or whether there were really supernatural elements, Su Zhou had his own way of distinguishing the truth from the false.

After all, as an ability user, he could really see 'unusual' things.

Ten years ago, when Su Zhou was still in elementary school, he made six other kids cry in a one-on-six fight. The teacher, not knowing what to do, kept Su Zhou at school and asked his parents to come and discuss the matter.

And while standing in the corridor as punishment, bored out of his mind, during that twilight hour while waiting for his parents, Su Zhou vaguely saw what seemed to be white shadows drifting at the end of the school corridor.

At that time, he was ignorant and fearless, so he opened his eyes wide and observed carefully - the white shadow was actually a little girl happily skipping and jumping. Half of the girl's face was blurry, with only faint blue lights in her eyes, and when she noticed that Su Zhou seemed to be able to see her, she quickly dissipated, turning into mist, and avoiding Su Zhou's surprised gaze.

Although no one believed him, and he was even said to be naughty and mischievous, only knowing how to lie... Su Zhou did indeed see it, and he was too lazy to argue with those adults about lying or not. Seeing is believing.

Since then, Su Zhou had been able to see some strange shadows, or hear 'spirit sounds' that others could not hear, causing dizziness.

Because of this, he began to like all kinds of strange news, and enthusiastically searched for myths and legends and folk tales from various countries.

Naturally, these unusual phenomena were not seen every day, but whenever it was midnight, or when the night was dissipating and the morning sun was about to rise, Su Zhou could always see some black or white shadows wandering in the streets or residential areas, emitting ghostly sounds that only he could hear and perceive.

If it was only this, Su Zhou might still be able to deceive himself, thinking that it was just a hallucination caused by too much academic pressure and only sleeping five hours a day.

But in recent years, Su Zhou had encountered more and more abnormal situations. A few years ago, when he was passing through the city center square at night, he even saw an old man in military uniform, like a phantom, smiling and greeting him.

'Young man, full of spirit! Study hard!'

Although the old man in military uniform only said the most ordinary words of encouragement, his vanishing into thin air undoubtedly made him a 'supernatural phenomenon'! This immediately made Su Zhou even more fanatical about this aspect, and he believed it without a doubt.

Moreover, he didn't know if it was because of this, but his physical fitness seemed to be getting better and better, and now it had even become so strong that he was a little scared himself.

To give a simple and easy-to-understand example: the current Su Zhou could crush thick bones with his bare hands, and he didn't need pliers to eat crabs and lobsters. He could crush the thick shells with just a pinch of his fingers!

The world's top athletes can run 100 meters in under ten seconds, but Su Zhou, who had not received formal training, could run within 11 seconds in private tests, which was the level of a national first-class athlete!

And the various other physical indicators such as weightlifting, endurance, swimming, and lung capacity were all comprehensively close to those of athletes, and even surpassed them in some special aspects.

Occasionally seeing ghosts, having extraordinary physical fitness, but not yet exceeding the limits of humans... Su Zhou called his current state a 'quasi-ability user'.
