Chapter 169: Apologize

Chapter 169: Chapter 169: Apologize

Finally, one problem was solved. Amber had been taken to the police station for further questioning. Meanwhile, it was now evening, and Matthias and Victoria returned to the big family’s home for dinner.

Victoria was still unaccustomed to Lucretia’s intense attention to her, despite their previous relationship as bitter enemies. The slightly awkward atmosphere in the dining room, attended by Lucretia, Charles, Matthias, and herself, made her feel uncomfortable enjoying dinner with Matthias’s big family.

"Victoria, why are you eating so little?" Lucretia suddenly scolded, making Victoria even more awkward.

Meanwhile, Matthias could only roll his eyes as he handed his wife some side dishes. "Mother, could you please be less harsh with my wife? She’ll be even more afraid of you!"

"I’m not being mean! It just annoys me to see your wife acting all shy while she’s eating!" Lucretia glared at her son. "Don’t tell me you’ve been spoiling her too much! You always bring her side dishes and feed her."

Matthias snapped his fingers. "Finally, you’re sensitive to my thoughts."

Victoria swiftly kicked her husband’s leg. "Matthias, I’ve always been independent! Why are you talking to your mother like I’m so spoiled?"

"Aren’t you always so spoiled by me? Especially since you were pregnant, you didn’t want to be away from me for too long."

Lucretia sighed weakly. She put her spoon and fork down on her plate for a moment. "I’m sorry, Victoria. I should have trusted you from the start."

Victoria shook her head quickly. "It’s okay, Mom. I actually understand why you’ve hated me all this time. If my family hadn’t caused trouble for the T&H Group, you probably wouldn’t hate me."

"I really am so stupid. In fact, I trusted Amber more than you. Even though Amber is a bad person and you are a good person." Lucretia’s gaze fell on her son. "No wonder my son is so crazy about you. He even gave up all the hard work he’s earned abroad just to be with you."

Matthias gripped his wife’s right hand tightly. "Mother, if I hadn’t returned to this city sooner, Victoria would have married my best friend. Luckily, I acted faster."

"This time, I won’t stand in your way anymore. It actually makes me sad to see my son so depressed because he can’t freely date the woman he loves."

Charles laughed heartily, shaking his head. "This is why I’ve been admonishing you from the start. Don’t be too harsh on Victoria! Luckily, Victoria isn’t the vindictive type."

Lucretia clasped her daughter-in-law’s hands. "It’s really hard for me not to visit you all these years when you were in the hospital. I’m so sorry, Victoria."

Victoria stroked the back of her mother-in-law’s hand with a friendly smile. "Matthias told me everything. I know another reason you hate me is because you signed an agreement that would be very detrimental to T&H Group if we were to marry."

"But, I’m still curious. How did you get into that accident? Is Gianna really the killer?"

Victoria’s expression turned serious. "Actually, I suspect my stepmother is the main culprit. Because all this time, my stepmother has been desperate to get rid of me."

"Your family is truly cruel!" Lucretia clenched her right fist tightly. "So, what are you going to do now? Amber’s been arrested, and your problems are somewhat lessened."

"I plan to continue my charade, Mom," Matthias said casually.

Lucretia crossed her arms. "So you still haven’t learned your lesson in constantly misunderstanding your wife! Do you enjoy seeing your wife angry?"

"Mother, the matter is still unresolved. I don’t want my wife to be in danger anymore. Have you forgotten that the murderer who killed my wife is still living peacefully to this day?"

Charles sighed weakly. "I’ll agree with your idea, Matthias. But I’d be sad if you two ended up fighting like before."

"Actually, I feel very tortured seeing you gloomy all the time since you separated from your wife."

Victoria immediately embraced her husband’s hand tightly. "Grandpa, Mom, you don’t need to worry. After Matthias told me all his plans, I didn’t misunderstand him anymore. In fact, I fully support him now."

"Thank goodness, you two are finally back together." Charles glanced at the clock for a moment. "Victoria, since it’s getting late, why don’t you and Matthias stay here for the night?"

"But, actually I can go home by myself."

Charles looked at his grandson with a mischievous smile. "Actually, Matthias hasn’t been able to sleep lately. Shouldn’t you keep him in bed today?"

Matthias rolled his eyes. "Grandpa, can you please not talk nonsense?"

"I’m speaking the truth. Besides, your wife should know that you’ve been running around the park lately just because you can’t sleep."

Victoria enthusiastically shook her husband’s left hand. "Grandpa, don’t worry. I’ll stay with Matthias in bed tonight. I don’t want him to get sick from not being able to sleep."

Matthias brought his lips close to his wife’s ear. "It seems like you’re the one who wants to pamper me."

Ultimately, Victoria chose to sleep with her husband at this house after hearing her grandfather-in-law’s suggestion. She was also shocked to hear that her husband hadn’t been able to sleep lately, despite always pretending to be strong. Although Matthias had previously recounted everything he had done at the courthouse, Victoria initially thought he was joking.

It was the first time Victoria entered Matthias’s room in the house. She explored the room, which was no less spacious than the one in her mansion. It was very tidy and sparsely packed. She was still wearing the dress her husband had given her, which was actually one of the reasons Victoria was hesitant about sleeping with him tonight.

"Matthias, are you sure I’ll sleep with you tonight wearing this dress?"

Matthias handed his wife her pajamas. "You can wear mine for now."

Victoria folded her arms. "Aren’t you much bigger than me? I’ll look like a dwarf if I wear your pajamas."

"Whatever clothes you wear, you will still be my wife."
