His condition was obvious without needing to ask.
After a few minutes, Gu Song said, "The doctor said you need to be on an IV for a few days. The shadow on your lungs is quite large, so just rest. Should we notify your parents?"
Shen Su: "No need."
He was over thirty. It wouldn't do to inform his parents about a fever. Besides, he didn't particularly want to see them right now.
Not many people at the company knew about Shen Su's hospitalization. He had only informed his assistant, asking him to work a bit harder these few days, handle what he could, and leave the rest for when he returned.
After hearing Shen Su's arrangements, the assistant hesitated and said, "Mr. Shen, Ji Tong's resignation report still needs your stamp."
Shen Su: "You stamp it for me."
Assistant: "Understood, Mr. Shen."
Although the news of Shen Su and Ji Tong's breakup hadn't been made public, as Shen Su's assistant, he was well aware of the situation.
After finishing his necessary instructions, Shen Su hung up. He stood by the window, looking at the scenery outside, his eyes stinging slightly.
This was the first time in his life he had contracted pneumonia. He had always been in good physical condition and rarely got sick. Apart from a couple of bone injuries from playing basketball during his student days, he had never been hospitalized.
He never imagined that one day he would end up in the hospital, and it would be for a woman.
The dream from that night kept replaying in his mind. He would recall it with the slightest lapse in attention, yet there was nothing he could do.
Gu Song informed Xing Zheng and Liang Yu Feng in their group chat about Shen Su's hospitalization.
As it was the weekend, Xing Zheng and Liang Yu Feng decided to visit him in the hospital. After all, Shen Su falling ill was a rare event.
Lin Mei learned about it from Xing Zheng and was also surprised. "Shen Su is sick? Isn't he usually in good health?"
Xing Zheng: "He broke up with someone recently. He might not be in a good mood."
Lin Mei: "Broke up? With Ji Tong? You never mentioned it."
Xing Zheng: "I only found out not long ago."
Lin Mei's curiosity was piqued. "Their relationship seemed quite good. How did they break up?"
Xing Zheng's expression became somewhat complex. After a pause, he finally said, "He still can't let go of Feng Feng."
Lin Mei: "...You guys are just guessing, right?"
Shen Su didn't look like someone who couldn't let go of Feng Feng.
Xing Zheng: "He said so himself."
Lin Mei: "..."
"Never mind him. Men are like that," Xing Zheng said, pulling Lin Mei closer for a kiss. "I'll go see him. You take Jing Chu out first, and I'll find you when I'm done."
Lin Mei savored Xing Zheng's words, "Men are like that," and smiled. She understood the implied meaning.
Shen Su was a playboy. It was impossible to expect him to fall truly in love. Now that Feng Feng had finally accepted Li Yue, it was best not to say these things to her and disturb her peace of mind.
Xing Zheng and Liang Yu Feng met in the hospital's underground parking lot and went to the ward together. At that moment, Shen Su was alone in the room.
Seeing them arrive, Shen Su was surprised. "Why are you guys here?"
Xing Zheng: "To see if you've died yet."
Liang Yu Feng remained silent, as usual.
Shen Su: "I'm not dead. It's great."
Xing Zheng: "How did you end up in the hospital?"
Shen Su: "I don't know. Maybe I caught a chill from taking a cold shower."
Liang Yu Feng frowned. "Taking cold showers in March? That's quite resilient."
Although his tone was flat, it was clear he was being sarcastic. Shen Su rubbed his temples, not bothering to retort.
In fact, they all knew who Shen Su was doing this for. Gu Song had discussed it with them in the group chat earlier.
Xing Zheng and Liang Yu Feng exchanged glances, then said to Shen Su, "Calm down. You'd better think carefully before you act. Don't always listen to Gu Song's advice; you'll just end up hurting yourself."
He expected Shen Su to dismiss it, but to his surprise, Shen Su nodded. "Mm."
Feng Feng went to watch a movie with Li Yue during the day. After the movie, they went to a restaurant for dinner. As soon as they sat down, Feng Feng received a message from Gu Song.
Gu Song: 【Shen Su has pneumonia and a high fever. He's hospitalized.】
Feng Feng's brow furrowed upon seeing the message, but she didn't reply. She simply deleted it.
Her furrowed brow wasn't due to worry, but rather surprise. She had known Shen Su for so many years and had never seen him sick. When she caught a cold during seasonal changes, he seemed like an insulator against viruses, always energetic.
Gu Song had not given up on his plan to talk to Feng Feng privately. He sent her several more messages later, all to no avail.
After waiting for three days, he finally got an opportunity on a weekday.
On Wednesday, there was a work dinner for their department, which Feng Feng attended with several leaders. The venue was Ru Feng Club.
Upon learning this, Gu Song rushed over from the hospital. By then, Feng Feng's group was nearing the end of their gathering.
Gu Song decided to wait by the stairs and, as expected, ran into Feng Feng.
"Ms. Feng, can we talk?" Gu Song blocked her path with his arm.
Gu Song was also familiar with people from Feng Feng's department. The leaders saw them and didn't think much of it, leaving Feng Feng behind and departing.
Gu Song had been "harassing" Feng Feng for almost a week about this matter. Feng Feng knew that if she didn't talk to him once, she wouldn't be able to resolve this trouble.
After some thought, she agreed. Gu Song then led her to a reserved private room, and they sat down at the table.
Feng Feng took a sip of honey lemon water to sober up. At that moment, her phone buzzed. It was a WeChat message from Li Yue, who was waiting for her outside the club to take her home.
Feng Feng sent Li Yue a voice message: "Wait for me for a bit. I ran into a friend, and I'll be down after we talk."
Gu Song, being so perceptive, couldn't help but hear Feng Feng deliberately saying that to him, intending to remind him not to waste time.
After Feng Feng finished her voice message, Gu Song feigned ignorance and asked, "Is that your little boyfriend again?"
Gu Song's words were laced with disdain, making it obvious he didn't think highly of Li Yue.
Feng Feng disliked his tone, but she didn't have the energy to argue with him. "What do you want to talk to me about? Just say it directly."
"Did you see the messages I sent you these past few days?" Gu Song asked.
Feng Feng: "I saw them."
Gu Song: "Shen Su is quite seriously ill and is still on an IV."
As he spoke, he observed Feng Feng's expression.
As he expected, Feng Feng showed almost no reaction. She was the same as always.
Gu Song couldn't help but add, "Aren't you worried about him at all? You were together for a year or two, after all."
Feng Feng: "I've been with many men. Do I need to care about all of them?"
Her words were calm and devoid of emotion, yet they were quite heartless.
Gu Song stared at her for a moment, then suddenly smiled. "You two are so alike."
Feng Feng knew he was referring to Shen Su, but she never felt they were alike in any way.
Gu Song then added, "Equally heartless."
