Ye Ziyu stood at the foot of the company building, but not a single taxi that passed by was empty. She stood by the roadside, waving her arms incessantly, but couldn't flag one down.
Out of options, she had to call Ye Chenhan.
Five minutes later, Di Mingjue's car pulled up in front of Ye Ziyu.
"Get in!"
Opening the passenger door, Ye Ziyu bent down and got in.
"Why the sudden urge to go back?" Di Mingjue had interrupted his meeting immediately after receiving Ye Ziyu's call. His gaze fell on the document bag in Ye Ziyu's arms and then to her anxious face. "What happened? Why aren't you speaking?"
Her silence made Di Mingjue uneasy.
"Nothing happened. I'm worried about Xingxing and can't focus on work."
"Who? Xingxing?"
The moving car screeched to a halt.
Di Mingjue couldn't believe what he heard. He turned to look at Ye Ziyu. "Did Ye Shaoting arrange this?"
"No, I decided to go back and take care of him myself." Ye Ziyu showed Di Mingjue the photos on her phone.
Just moments before, Di Mingjue had struggled to understand why Ye Ziyu was so worried about someone else's child. Seeing these photos, he finally understood.
His tiny arms were not unblemished; the festering wounds made him, an adult, feel pain just by looking at them.
"What happened?"
"Ye Shaoting did it."
"Is he crazy, beating a child like this?"
Di Mingjue exclaimed angrily. When it came to children, he handled them as if they were fragile treasures, never once considering hitting them.
The car started moving again. Di Mingjue kept muttering, "Did you ask him why?"
"He said it was a fight with a classmate."
"A fight? Then the school teachers should know the situation."
Considering that Yu Ze and Xingxing were in the same school, Di Mingjue became concerned about safety within the school.
"Let's pick up the children later and ask the teachers about it."
"Okay."
The car sped up, and in less than half an hour, they arrived at the Ye residence.
Without waiting for Di Mingjue to park the car, Ye Ziyu hurried inside.
"Miss is back."
"Where's Xingxing?"
"The eldest young master just took him to the hospital."
Ye Shaoting is back?
When Ye Ziyu left the company, she hadn't informed Ye Shaoting about Xingxing's condition. Her main intention was to understand from Xingxing himself whether he had really fought with classmates at school.
Looking at the servant in front of her, Ye Ziyu asked, "Did you call him?"
"No, the eldest young master was worried about young master Xingxing and came back himself," the servant explained.
Recalling his guilty expression in the office, Ye Ziyu understood why he had returned.
As Ye Ziyu turned to leave, she bumped into Di Mingjue, who was entering.
"Aren't you going to see Xingxing? Where are you going?"
"Elder brother is back and already took Xingxing away."
After Di Mingjue learned the situation, he checked the time. Going to school at this hour would give them ample time to talk with the teachers about the children's situation at school.
As the idea struck him, Di Mingjue took Ye Ziyu away from the Ye residence and headed to the school.
...
Teachers' Office.
"Miss Ye, Mr. Di, please have some water." Led by the dean, Xingxing's homeroom teacher learned the identities of Ye Ziyu and Di Mingjue. After placing the cups in front of them, the homeroom teacher returned to his chair.
"Because Xingxing's father has been too busy, he hasn't had time to communicate with him. Since you are here, I can also tell you about Xingxing's situation."
"We appreciate the teacher's effort. We are here to understand if Xingxing had a fight with a classmate yesterday?"
The homeroom teacher nodded. "Yes. It was during break time, and students were free to move around. A student from the class ran to inform me that Xingxing and a classmate were fighting. I later questioned them.
Xingxing was not at fault for the fight. It was a mischievous student in the class who made a joke about Xingxing not having a mother. It's possible the hurtful words caused Xingxing to retaliate."
