Chapter 779: Chapter 779: Almost Cost Her Life
Chi Yue thought to herself that this was not good, but before she could react, Fu Mianmian spoke.
"Mommy, Daddy’s back, I brought him to see you. You guys talk; I’m going to watch cartoons."
After saying that, she ran off, leaving the two adults facing each other in bewilderment.
Chi Yue was uncertain whether Fu Mianmian had mentioned to Fu Rongyin what she had just said and hesitated about whether to speak when the man in front of her opened his mouth first.
"I heard you missed me?"
Chi Yue remained silent.
The little one had let something slip without her knowing.
She kept her composure, "Mianmian told you, didn’t she? You just believe her?"
The man’s gaze was sincere. "I believe her. I raised Mianmian. I know her character best."
Chi Yue diverted her gaze, attempting to change the subject. "This place isn’t a shelter. The divorce proceedings are coming to an end soon, and I suggest you move out early. It’s for the best, for both of us."
However, the man seemed not to have heard her, saying, "Is it so difficult to admit you miss me?"
A flush of anger rose in Chi Yue’s eyes. "Why would I miss you? To reminisce about how you stood me up three times a day without taking me seriously? Or to dream about the future where I wait indefinitely alone with the child? Am I supposed to degrade myself like this?"
Fu Rongyin’s eyes darkened slightly, and he did not respond immediately.
Chi Yue started talking, and the words she had hidden deep inside burst out uncontrollably.
She walked around the desk to face him. "Don’t forget, there’s still the matter of a car accident between us. If not handled well, I could end up branded as a murderer, and the victim would be you."
Thinking back to the afternoon, thinking about using Fu Rongyin, Chi Yue thought she must have been insane to have entertained such a ridiculous idea.
They were about to get divorced; how could she leverage their emotions to manipulate her motive for murder now? If the divorce didn’t go through, she would have wasted another month waiting.
And the car accident, she could find other ways to handle it, albeit more complicated ones.
With that thought, Chi Yue calmed down.
Fu Rongyin was even more composed and calm than she had imagined.
A flicker of emotion passed through his clear eyes, so quick that she could hardly catch it.
"About the car accident, I will handle it, and it won’t cause you any trouble. Not now, but soon."
Chi Yue laughed, "You always say that, and you always say ’not now’. Then you delay day after day. What does that even mean? Can your words be trusted anymore?"
"Sorry, I just... I can’t promise when, I can only say, as soon as possible."
Chi Yue took a deep, weary breath, "Do whatever you like."
She left the study, went back to her room, and locked the door.
She called Chi Jianshan to take good care of Fu Mianmian and let her try to sleep on her own that night.
Chi Jianshan, knowing that Fu Rongyin was at home, had deliberately avoided them. Now receiving Chi Yue’s call, he guessed what might be happening.
Chi Yue had not slept well the night before, and this night she went to bed early.
In the middle of the night, she suddenly heard Fu Mianmian’s crying and jolted awake from bed.
Realizing it was a dream, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Lying back in bed, she couldn’t fall asleep anymore. In a daze, she heard Fu Mianmian’s crying again, right outside her bedroom door!
Chi Yue immediately rolled out of bed and went to open the door, her heart aching unbearably at the sight.
Fu Mianmian was lying across her doorway, clutching her little blanket, her tiny body curled into a ball, still desperately stifling her cries.
"Mianmian~"
Chi Yue’s hands trembled as she picked her up, overwhelmed with a surge of unbearable guilt.
