Gentle Sleep Instructor
Chapter 955 Wanted: Dead or Alive
But seeing the figure was already the limit. Fatty shook his head, “Couldn’t see it clearly.”
No one wanted to go back to confirm now, so everyone decided to follow the original plan and look for clues outside the manor.
Not far from the manor was a street. Everyone walked along, observing. The feeling here was like a small town in a Western movie, and a rather desolate one at that. Almost all the shops on both sides of the street were closed. Through the cloudy glass windows, you could see crooked shelves inside, and trash on the ground.
The more Bai Xiaojie walked, the more uncertain she felt. She often watched Western horror movies, and she actually felt that the scene here was almost the same as the haunted, remote towns in the movies.
Her experience was far less than that of Miao Qing and Liu Hui. This was only her second mission.
Many papers were pasted on each dilapidated door. When the wind blew, half of the fallen papers slapped against the door, making a *pa-ta* sound, like a white banner summoning souls.
Jiang Cheng stepped forward and tore off one of the papers. Because it had been there for too long, many of the words on it were blurred. In the middle was a photo of a man with a beard.
“It’s a missing person notice,” Miao Qing said, looking at the photo.
“These… are all missing person notices.” Liu Hui looked at the papers pasted on the shop doors and windows, turned her head, and said in a strange tone, “Not for just one person. This town has lost many people.”
Ouyang Huanbin turned his head to look at the other end of the street. There were missing person notices on the doors of the shops along this street, and on the pillars along the street, “What exactly happened here? How… how could so many people go missing?”
“I don’t know.” Jiang Cheng took out his phone and took several pictures of the missing person notices, “But this should be our mission this time. We need to investigate the reason why these people disappeared.”
Just as they were about to continue walking forward, Jiang Zhao didn’t move. He turned his head to look behind him, in the direction they had come from. Not far away was the wall surrounding the manor.
“What are you looking at?” Huai Yi had a very bad impression of Jiang Zhao, the kind he was ready to kill at the first opportunity.
Jiang Zhao didn’t answer immediately, his gaze still fixed behind him. After a moment, he called out to everyone, “Don’t you find it strange?” He pointed to the street, and then gestured towards the location of the manor, “This street is covered with missing person notices, but near that manor, there isn’t a single one.”
After being reminded by Jiang Zhao, everyone realized that it was indeed strange, “It doesn’t seem right,” Liu Hui said, looking at the manor after thinking for a moment.
The manor was very close to here, and it looked like it hadn’t been taken care of for a long time. The walls were already dilapidated, but even so, no one had posted a missing person notice on the wall.
No matter how you looked at it, the wall of the manor was much more conspicuous than these dilapidated shops.
With doubts, everyone continued to walk forward. Gradually, they made a new discovery: the number of missing person notices was gradually decreasing. At the end of this street, they were almost nowhere to be seen.
“There are fewer and fewer missing person notices,” Bai Xiaojie said, with a hint of relief in her voice. Sweeping her eyes over the black and white photos, she always had a feeling of being watched, as if the people in the photos were staring at her in places she couldn’t see.
“We’re getting farther and farther away from that manor,” Jiang Cheng said suddenly.
Bai Xiaojie paused, and the next second, her expression immediately froze.
Miao Qing also realized the problem at this moment, and lowered her voice to say, “That butler made us sign a liability waiver to stay in this manor, stating that we would be responsible for any situation that occurred during our stay.”
“I asked him what kind of situations might occur, and he replied that he didn’t know, because some people hadn’t even been found,” Liu Hui said. “It seems that these missing people had similar experiences to us, and disappeared after staying in that manor.”
“The people looking for them know this, but because they don’t dare to approach the manor, they have to post the missing person notices on the street closest to the manor.”
“So the focus now is to find out what exactly happened inside the manor.” Jiang Cheng put his phone in his pocket and led the group forward, heading towards a square within sight.
After arriving at the square, everyone truly felt the desolation of this town. The pool in the center of the square had long been dry, and the paint on some of the cartoon sculptures nearby had also peeled off badly, making them look somewhat eerie at first glance.
During the day, there were hardly any people on the road. The few they saw were like walking corpses. Jiang Cheng shifted his gaze to a house not far away.
The house looked old from the outside, but the door was open, and there was a sign hanging that said “Open”. It was a bar.
It was relatively dark inside. Jiang Cheng went to the dirty bar. There was a rustling sound behind the bar, and soon, a burly man wearing a coarse cloth apron, with bloodshot eyes, walked over and asked in a muffled voice, “What do you want to drink?”
The burly man was half a head taller than Jiang Cheng, and his breath reeked of alcohol.
“We want to inquire about something,” Bai Xiaojie interjected.
Unexpectedly, the burly man glared at her and slammed a piece of wood on the bar with a *bang*, scaring Bai Xiaojie’s face pale. “I sell alcohol here. You want to ask questions without buying my alcohol?”
Miao Qing stepped forward and pulled Bai Xiaojie behind him, saying with a smile, “I’m sorry, it’s our fault.” He took some money out of his pocket and placed it on the bar very naturally, “This is our first time here, and we don’t know which of your drinks is your specialty. How about this, you can arrange something with this money.”
The money was what he had found in the drawer of his room last night.
Seeing the money, the burly man’s expression improved a little. He grabbed the money, stuffed it into a small pocket outside his apron, and then randomly took out two bottles of wine from the dark shelves behind him, handing them to Miao Qing perfunctorily, “Here are these two bottles, it’s a bargain for you.”
Miao Qing was still polite, and after taking the wine, he didn’t leave, “Boss, I want to ask…”
“I don’t know,” the burly man said, wiping his hands on his coarse cloth apron.
“But we haven’t even asked yet,” Fatty said, puzzled.
“You don’t need to ask.” The burly man folded his arms and looked at the people in front of him with an expression that said he had already seen through them, “I don’t know anything.”
“But you took our money,” Liu Hui wanted to struggle a little more.
“I took the money for the alcohol. I’ve already given you the alcohol,” the burly man said.
“But you just said…” Bai Xiaojie was also angered by the man. He was clearly playing with them. If they weren’t trying to ask questions, who would buy his alcohol?
“I’ve already said what I needed to say. Either sit down and drink obediently, or get out of here immediately, you ignorant outsiders…” The burly man muttered, and Jiang Cheng smelled a hint of fear in the burly man’s words, especially the phrase “ignorant outsiders.”
