Cheng Cheng and the Cicada
Chapter 33 Confession
Then she put away her pistol, picked up the laptop, and walked to the keypad door.
First, she used a small tool to pry open the lock casing, exposing the circuit board inside.
Then, after some manipulation, she connected the wires and began operating the laptop.
About ten minutes passed...
*Di di!*
With a soft click, the password indicator light turned from red to green, and the heavy steel door opened with a thud.
CC stood up, pointing to the half-open keypad door:
“The door’s open. You go first.”
“No, you go first,” Lin Xian said politely.
He knew this script all too well… He was playing the role of Big-Face Cat. If he went in first, he’d be shot in the head, 100%!
“You go first; your contribution was greater,” CC gestured.
“No, no, no,” Lin Xian waved his hand:
“Clearly, your role is more critical. Please, after you.”
“Don’t you need a lot of money? You take it first.”
“Ladies first, ladies first.”
“I’m afraid I can’t move the gold bricks inside.”
“You can take some of the lighter gold bars first.”
“Then I should go find a sack first, so I can carry more.”
“Now that you mention it, I seem to have forgotten my sack in the car, too. How careless of me.”
“Since you need the money so urgently, don’t stand on ceremony.”
“Actually, it’s not that urgent.”
“…”
“…”
For a long while, the two stood face to face, neither daring to go in first.
Lin Xian was afraid CC would shoot him.
CC was also shocked by Lin Xian's marksmanship, afraid Lin Xian would shoot her.
But in fact, they both knew very well… there wasn’t a penny in this warehouse.
“Alright, let’s stop pretending and have a frank conversation.”
Lin Xian felt there was no point in continuing the stalemate, so he took the lead in clarifying:
“Actually, I’m not Big-Face Cat.”
CC chuckled:
“Does that really need to be said? You don’t think you’re doing a good job acting, do you?”
“You don’t have a gun, you don’t have C4, and the accelerator was jerky when you were driving. It’s obvious you don’t usually drive that car.”
“Although I don’t know or haven’t met Big-Face Cat, we’ve chatted online. I know you’re not him.”
“So, who are you?”
CC crossed her arms, looking at Rhine Cat through the Ultraman mask:
“You give me the impression of being extremely unprofessional… like a college student suddenly deciding to rob a bank. But your marksmanship is superb, far from that of an ordinary person. I’ve only seen one person whose shooting skills can be compared to yours. The way you two shoot is exactly the same.”
“Oh? There’s such an expert?” Lin Xian spun the gun in his hand:
“Maybe I’ll have a chance to spar with them sometime.”
…
…
Silence fell again, mysterious as ever.
In the vast space, there was only the sound of Lin Xian spinning his pistol.
“How about we cooperate?” Lin Xian said.
“Cooperate on what?”
Lin Xian pointed to the half-open keypad door:
“I know your purpose is to open a safe inside, a safe with Lin Xian’s name on it.”
“You really know a lot. Why don’t you just tell me what’s inside?”
CC looked at the safe inside the keypad door:
“Then I can go home now.”
“I don’t know what’s inside the safe, but I know the safe’s combination,” Lin Xian answered truthfully.
Since both sides had shown their cards to this point, there was no need to deceive each other anymore.
Moreover, Lin Xian knew that CC wasn’t a difficult person to communicate with, at least she’d been quite reasonable the past few times.
“So, what are your conditions? You won’t just tell me the combination for nothing, will you?” CC asked.
“I only have one condition.”
Lin Xian looked at the Ultraman in front of him through the Rhine Cat mask:
“Let’s both take off our masks… and meet each other honestly.”
CC touched the mask on her face:
“You’re saying, if I take off my mask, you’ll give me the safe’s combination?”
“That’s right.”
CC chuckled:
“That sounds like a losing proposition. If we both take off our masks, I’ll get the combination, but what will you get?”
“I just want an attitude of mutual trust,” Lin Xian casually lied.
He couldn’t tell the truth, could he?
“Okay, deal.”
CC turned and kicked open the keypad door, walking inside.
She checked the names on the safes one by one, finally stopping in front of the safe with the name [Lin Xian] on it.
Seeing the eight combination dials on the safe, CC dropped the laptop in her hand and shook her head:
“It’s a mechanical lock.”
“Are you sure you know the combination to this safe? Judging by the degree of oxidation on the paint… this safe is at least several hundred years old.”
Lin Xian nodded affirmatively:
“So, let’s save some time.”
He pulled off the hair tie on his head and took off the small Rhine Cat mask from his face.
Then he looked at CC, who was wearing an Ultraman mask:
“Do I look familiar?”
CC shook her head blankly:
“Why would you ask that… should I know you?”
Forget it.
Lin Xian didn’t intend to waste time on this question.
On this issue, CC was truly stubborn. It was obvious that she had definitely seen him before, otherwise her attitude wouldn’t be so strange.
But last time, she’d rather have her head bitten off than admit it… there was no chance this time.
So, he went straight to the point:
“It’s your turn.”
CC looked around. There were no cameras in this warehouse.
So, she tucked the pistol into her waistband.
She reached behind her head with both hands and pulled up the hair tie.
The mask slowly came off, and her face gradually appeared…
Deep brown bangs, slightly flattened by the mask, fell evenly in a comfortable and natural curve, giving off a youthful and beautiful feeling.
Her eyebrows were as light as willow leaves, and a pair of lively eyes were crystal clear.
Although her eyes were cold and wary at the moment, they still gave the illusion of constantly brewing a smiling curve.
There was also a small beauty mark at the corner of her left eye.
The mask continued to fall…
A high, straight nose, lightly rouged lips tightly closed, and fair skin with a healthy, rosy glow. This was an unadorned face, but its unspeakable purity surpassed all heavy makeup.
When the mask completely slid off her face, a clear and clean jawline made her already petite face even more three-dimensional and delicate.
She was much younger than Lin Xian had imagined, like a high school girl of seventeen or eighteen.
All the mysteries were finally revealed, and the answer stood before Lin Xian—
…
…
[Who is this?]
Lin Xian stared blankly at CC, who was flipping her bangs.
He had thought that after CC took off her mask, he would see a familiar, vaguely familiar face, and then directly confirm that his dream was fake.
But the CC in front of him, he had absolutely no impression of, he didn’t recognize this person at all!
But he must have heard CC's voice before… How could this be explained? Was it really just a misconception or a coincidence?
“Hey, what are you standing there for!”
CC frowned, staring at Lin Xian:
“Now… it’s time for you to tell me the safe’s combination!”
